My vet gave HCG to my mare for the fourth time yesterday. What are the chances of this being effective? I heard that after 2 times it is not effective and could even do the opposite and could cause her to ovulate later.
Repeated use of hCG in the same breeding season is not likely to be as much of an issue as it is thought by some. It definitely is not an issue if used in different breeding seasons. Certainly using it 4 times in the same season may be undesirable, and I would probably have changed to something else if it were me (Deslorelin from BET Pharm for example). It is more likely to be an issue in older mares, but with some mares does not present a problem. The bigger issue is probably why have you not got a pregnancy after 3 prior cycles?
As the saying goes "the proof of the pudding is in the eating"... did the mare ovulate in a timely fashion?
Jos, an update on my mare. She was given HCG for the fourth time and ovulated 60 hours later. I guess it's not working for her any longer. Last time she ovulated in 36 hours.
Good thing to know for future reference for her. Thanks for your help! Marilyn
