We rescued a VERY pregnant standard Jennet this evening and have named her Faith. She looks as though she could foal anytime. She has the pointiest (is that a word?) belly I have ever seen, her udder is full, her tail head is very prominent, she has jello butt and her vulva is so loose it jiggles when she walks. I couldn't wait to get her home, as I was afraid she would foal before we could move her. She was in a pasture with poor/no grass, old hay, filthy water and a dirt floor run-in with no straw or other covering. As I type she is in a newly cleaned stall with fresh straw down, a clean pail of fresh water, fresh Bermuda hay, and some grain with an apple on top. I think she already likes it here, lol! I don't think we'll have a very long foal watch with her. She is all dark brown except for her white muzzle and she is a real doll.

Thanks Jane, I appreciate your comments. She has told us "thank you" also. Her udder is tight and warm (not hot). I was able to look at her closely today and she is nothing but skin and bones and baby. You can feel her hips, spine, ribs, etc, very easily. I had to feel right beside her tail for muscle as there is none on her hips. Does anyone have experience with malnourished mares and their babies? Does the baby get first chance at nutrients or does the mare/Jennet?

Thanks in advance.

Almost forgot. She has extensive hair loss on her legs, chest, face and ears. Could this be due to malnutrition?

Anything the foal needs, the foal takes from mom :-) Hair loss could be any number of things from mange, bugs, nutrition...

Thanks Diana. I always appreciate your input. I will post pics as soon as I find the camera. I lose that thing way too often. I tell myself it's sleep deprivation but I wonder if I'm just getting senile, lol!

Donkeys have funny udders LOL....I'd definitely consider getting her feet done before baby comes...as you have no idea if she'll put up with it with a foal...er...babydonk at her side

Diana, I think so too, looks like a cross between a goat udder and a horse udder :-O

IT'S A GIRL!!!! Born at 4:30 this morning. She has nursed, passed meconium and we are just waiting for the first pee. She seems healthy and active. She objected strenuously to having her naval dipped. Mom is doing great! She is protective but let's us handle the baby. She is a beautiful gray color with a white muzzle.
Diana, I fiqured this would happen since today is the first day we had her that the farrier could come, lol! I will take pics and post later today. Any ideas for names?

Correction, it's a boy! this is Brenda the gender clueless person, lol! When I looked to see if the baby was a boy or girl, I didn't see a penis, but I did see nipples (forgetting of course that male donkeys have nipples, too). When Dr. Burnley examined the baby, I was there to help hold and she found that he is a boy. (It was hard for me to tell as the baby was wiggling - that's my story and I'm sticking to it!)

1 thing hanging = gelding;
2 things hanging = mare;
3 things hanging = stallion.

Just sayin'...

Hey, I made sure it was the naval I dipped! LOL! (Even the vet had to turn him upside down to find his prepuce. He was hiding it! Blazer and Hershey were letting it all hang out so I had no trouble figuring out they were boys!)
I know you love me, Diana! Love ya back!

Thanks, Diana, for the congratulations! We have named him Miracle, because it's a miracle he is healthy as thin as Faith is. You can really see it now. I felt good when the vet told Faith "You came to the right place".
