This is my mare Foxy. She is a appendix QH bred to my bay AQHA now gelding. Last year Foxy had a jet black filly with just a star on her head. We are very anxious for the arrival of this foal and she is getting very close. Foxy's due date is around March 15th. Below are some pictures that I took tonight of her.

If its anything like last year I will be super happy. Ebony my foal from last year turns one year old on Tuesday and she is one nice looking filly. Foxy is still testing about 7.4 as her ph. I will take new pics tomorrow and post them. She is very grumpy and she is getting very soft by her tail head not a happy camper.

Stephanie, I want to tell you you have Foxy in a really nice barn. It seems like a nice place for her to foal.
However, I do feel the need to say that I am concerned about the body condition of your mare. She looks very thin, her topline is exposed. If she were my mare, I would increase her feed, as she will be foaling and lactating soon, which will take more weight off her. If you have been increasing her feed already, it would be a good idea to have a qualified vet out to determine what needs to be done to help her.
It seems you really care about this mare and I am sure you will do right by her.

Thanks for your concerns the vet has been out to see her and he feels it is just due to the foal pulling her down as she did this last year and as soon as she foaled she was just fine. Anyways if anyone does have suggestions I will take them as I have felt the same way but I have her on free feed of 2nd cutting grass/alfalfa mix round bale and than also in the run in she has hay so no matter where she is she has food in front of her and than she also gets about 10 lbs of equine senior a day as well as her alfalfa pellets and her beet pulp. She doesn't finish it all its a hit or miss daily if she will eat it all or not last year we had to just shove the feed afterwards and she was fine as she did lose a little before foaling cause she does tend to go off her feed the last month or so. Suggestions welcome its not that I want her to look this way its just that she is choosing not to eat as much as I would like and the vet is aware of the situation.

How old is your mare?
She is getting a lot of fiber in her diet with what you have her on. Which is great, but perhaps you need to add a bit more grain with a mare and foal blend. If she is an older mare, and thats why she is on senior, then you can always use a mare and foal feed and soak it a bit.
Also you could get the vet to do a fecal to see if there are any worms that are going unnoticed. Then there is always the possibility she needs her teeth floated.
Best Wishes!
( and thank you for not getting offended, I am just trying to be helpful! :-))

Im not offended I do right by my horses and I hate that she looks like this. She is 16 this year and I had her on a mare and foal feed but she actually is doing much better on this feed and looks better she wouldn't even hardly touch the mare and foal feed she is very picky eater. she had had a fecal and she is all clear and is wormed regluarly. I have her teeth done yearly she got them done in the fall to which they were not bad just had 2 very small sharp points.

There are some weight gain supplements you could add to top dress her feed. Perhaps that might help. If your unable, then maybe a year off of breeding to help her build back up? Just throwing out ideas...
I have a friend who has a mare that gets really down when in foal and after. She added a weight gain supplement and it helped her mare a lot, her mare was much younger.
Some mares just are harder keepers, Ive had one, and i had to use a high fat grain on her, that was the only way she maintained.

Here is a good article on feeding pregnant mares..One thing it notes is that with the mares late term pregnancy, they typically cant eat enough good quality fiber to meet there needs, there fore increase in grains may be needed.
With as much fiber your providing it may be in her best intrest to cut back on the fiber a bit and increase her grain. Beet pulp, hay, and equine senior all all very high in fiber, which is good, but she may just need more concentrated grain to help her maintain her weight.

I second Diana...I also discovered this Tiz Whiz 10/10/10 feed that I am VERY impressed with. I got a skinny gelding looking awesome that was fed a lot of beet pulp and Triple Crown Compete mixed prior to that. Tiz Whiz is an Ohio feed, arrived in Ocala a year ago or so. But I've had good luck with Stategy also which is easy to get. Good luck though, hope all goes well for you!

I have added safechoice to her grain as well as a soy oil. She is now at 6.8 tonight for her ph and crabby as all heck. Below are some new pics of her tonight.

Goodness Stephanie, he is a beautiful baby. She looks like a very big bodied mare also, is she? I had a hard time with 1 of my prego mares this winter/spring and one of my non-prego mares. I couldn't get them to put or keep any weight on either. Finally they snapped out of it. In Ohio we have had such strange weather and I think that had something to do with it! Funny because it was in my prego mares topline also. I started all broodmares on Animed MareKare in their 8th month and it seems to have really helped, and it is very reasonably priced. Everyone shedded out with beautiful shiny coats and seem to feel really good! If they could only quit rolling in the dirt/mud I would be happier!
