Does she look like she is still expecting or just an older fat out of shape mare who is losing her hay belly due to better quality hay? These are taken from the house today. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v92/shadowsfire/8-29-06am.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v92/shadowsfire/8-29-06pm.jpg And this is from yesterday and standing next to her. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v92/shadowsfire/8-27-06rtside.jpg And the 26th http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v92/shadowsfire/8-26-06.jpg She only shows a little tummy from the back too. Bag is not flat but its definatly not a mare ready to foal bag. |

Is she a maiden? And how far along is she? You never know really, we had a mare last year that never really looked all that pregnant http://www.webznmoredesign.com/Picture%20206.jpg That picture was taken just a few days before she foaled. But she did have a half full bag at that time, her bag did not finish filling until the very last few days. The best way to find out is get a vet check. |

She has had one foal before. 8 years ago and this was how she looked at 10 months. She was also round from the rear though and well right now you can't see much at all from the rear. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v92/shadowsfire/shadow10mopreg.jpg This was how she looked last summer when she was empty. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v92/shadowsfire/shadow9-6-2005003.jpg |

She does look pregnant compared to the "empty" picture. But I have a maiden mare who looks VERY pregnant right now, and she is only three months along. Her belly is from the 24/7 intake of her hay! I swear she never comes up for air! LOL |

I would say she does look pregnant compared to her last pregnancy picture. |

Shadow gets 2 1/2 flakes of alfalfa/timothy hay a day, (2wire bale of about 100 lbs) no pasture and she has to share it with a snotty little goat. LOL But I do give her 1lb of COB and 1Lb of alfalfa pellets-soaked. Took a couple more today and you can compare with how she looked last time. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v92/shadowsfire/8-30-06side.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v92/shadowsfire/8-30-06rear2.jpg and 8 years ago, about 2 weeks before foaling. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v92/shadowsfire/preggersshadow.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v92/shadowsfire/preggersshaw-rear.jpg And then one from last year at this time when she was out on pasture. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v92/shadowsfire/shadow9-6-2005003.jpg |

Today I got more hay in and was working on where the the barn is going and got the perfect angle to take a picture of her "bag" It looks bigger, but not really fuller. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v92/shadowsfire/9-2-06.jpg And then her "skinny" shot. Taken lower down. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v92/shadowsfire/9-1-06notfat.jpg And this one is more of a normal size. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v92/shadowsfire/9-1-06side.jpg Reaching for that last yummy patch of grass.. notice the muscling and then the bulge below it? http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v92/shadowsfire/9-1-06eve-reach.jpg and then taken this morning, she wanted out on the grass. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v92/shadowsfire/9-2-06-1.jpg She should not have any kind of a belly on this hay, she never has before? |

Yes Marci, I see it too. Missy does this from time to time also, muscle then bulge. I'm just at a total loss on her! I don't know what to think anymore... She is down to what I have always fed before this believed pregnancy and seems to be dropping overall weight but not that belly. Hang in there. I know it's easier said than done! |

Marci I didn't think she looked pregnant before and I still don't. I'm sorry. I know how much you want her to be pregnant. |

Our mare has that muscle line and then fat or something below it too, just like in that picture, Marci. Now our mare is only 3 months, so that can't be baby. She is very fat and sassy on summer pasture. I was kind of worrying when I was seeing that this weekend. We took her on a trail ride. I don't think I had any pics where it showed up. Wondering if it is from past babies or just fat. I will check for a pic to post again. Molly |

OK, lemme see if this works. In this picture you can see the line. She does not have heaves, btw. Is this anything to be concerned about, or just flab? <img> |

Hi Marci, We have a mare that had a foal 2 years ago and then after she foaled, even months after when excercised she never lost the belly. Also I have a mare that has milk year round whether she is pregnant or not. She has an udder about the size of your mare's. She is a long backed mare also so that makes it harder to see, but your mare is short coupled and she does seem to be full in the flanks, but pictures can be soo decieiving. If you take a picture at a certain angle it can make them look larger or smaller. My advice would be to first if possible, have a vet out, second take some pictures of her with her head up and her legs squared. take one from front, side, and back. just far enough back to get her in the lens, but not sooo far back that it is hard to see all her features. All I can say is beter to be safe than sorry and call a vet out ASAP. don't know your situation cause i have not been on computer lately, but you could have a mare in foal and you may not. It also sounds kind of silly, but you could do the "nail test".. You tie a piece of string ( i use dental floss) to a nail and hold it several inches above the mares back, depening on how far along she would be is where you would move it. earlier on you would move it closer to withers, later on you would move it towards her rear. If it swings in a circle it is supposed to be a filly and straight line is supposed to be colt. either way if you have a steady hand and are away from any metal buildings and it moves she is either pregnant or has an infection going on. It is supposed to work off the amniotic fluid. THIS IS NOT SCIENTIFIC, but something I have done to all my mares every year and it has not once fooled me about my mares being in foal. Good Luck and let us know. |

No change. I really do think I am being silly now. If she was in foal she would be huge or have had it by now. I'm darn sure I am staring at an empty belly. Which is just fine with me. My next horse is going to be gaited! I got to ride one last week, wow they are fun on the trail! |

I have two mares in the barn that have foaled. One foaled 09/11/2006 and the other 09/17/2006. They have been pastured together for about 4 years now. Right now I have them separated in different pastures with their foals. When they see each other in passing, they try to attack one another. I am really worried about putting them in the same pasture with their foals. I think they might try and kill each other, and of course the foals will be the one that end up really hurt. Is this normal? If I put them together, will they work it out? Should I keep them apart for a certain period of time and than try putting them together? Help! I'm not sure what to do. |

Gail - I would wait a little bit before putting these mares together. Usually mares are extremely protective of their foals for the first couple of weeks. After that, they should do ok together. Make sure you are right there when you put them together in case there's a problem. As long as they can eat, they will probably be ok. |

Sandy - I put them together in the same pasture on 09/23/06. One of the mares was in heat so I think she kinda had other things on her mind. It wasn't really as bad as I thought it was going to be. When the babies try and see each other, the moms won't let them. I am hoping with just a little time, moms will let them play together. Thanks for your help! |
