Hi,
Our Fox Trotter mare is bred for next year. She is only about 90 days and already looking pretty prego. This is not her first baby, she has had 7 that I know about if you count the twins she lost last year. Is it normal for a broodmare with past babies to start to get round so early? I am a little worried because of the twin situation last year. We had her checked in the first month to rule out twins and the vet found only one foal. I admit she has been idling around the pasture this month because I went on a 2 week vacation and she is a butterball. Maybe that is all it is, but the belly looks round. Thanks.

Hi Molly, I have a mare that is just about 112 days so she is close to your mare. Mine is a maiden mare so she still has her girlish figure. I have another mare that is 152 days and she has a belly but i think it is just a hay belly. I don't think they usually start showing this early but I guess some could. I would think your mare just has a little bit of hay belly. But if you are concerned the best thing to do is get a vet check, if not just for your own peace of mind.

Hey, my mare is pretty close to your alls and I was noticing last night how she kinda looks rounder. She is actually 113 days today. I think it is probably a hay belly at least I hope so because if she is already showing she wont be able to walk by the time April gets here. |

I will try to get a current pic of her, so you can see her roundness. She is a palomino Fox Trotter bred to larger MFT Chestnut stud. He's probably only a couple inches taller than her really. You can have a look at her and him, as well as one of her offspring who has a 2006 baby you might appreciate. Here is the album of them:

I was thinking that my mare was a bit fat too. She is about 4 1/2 months or so, so that puts her at about 135 days give or take. This would be her second foal. She had a filly two years ago, then lost last years somewhere between 3 and 5 months. I will get a picture of her tomorrow to show ya. I don't know if she should even be showing at this stage. I figure the foal is only the size of a rabbit more or less.'

One of my maiden mares is 151 days right now and in the the last couple weeks she's starting to show too. You can't tell looking at her from the side but straight on you defiently can. I know hers isn't fat because I can see the faint outline of her ribs. I didn't think she'd show much with her being a maiden and 15.1 but at this rate she's going to be huge by february! And there's only one ib there she's been US three times. All mares are different I guess -g- |

I just noticed today that my maiden mare that is 15.3 hands is starting to look more round in the belly. She is at 114 days today. I have another mare that is not maiden and is at 154 days today and she does not look the least bit pregnant. I will try and get some new pictures today to compare to some of the old pics I have. |

I have a Paint mare that is going on 5mo and she is already showing this is her 3 baby. I will post pictures tonight. |

 At a 114 days, the fetus is about the size of a rat, so I suspect that your mare's "round belly" is more likely due to either wishful thinking on your part or hay consumption on hers than the pregnancy... |

Jos, you are probably right, I think it might be my imagination or it could be that she is eating way to much lol. We just moved them to free graze, we where feeding twice a day and I think all the extra hay may be making her belly bigger. About when do you usually notice that they actually start looking pregnant? |

There's a tremendous variation on when you can really start to see mares getting "big", as it will depend upon mare build, number of gestations they've had, individual fetal growth etc. As a general rule, the earliest that you would start to see a difference would probably be 6-7 months, but that is not an absolute. Remember that 60% of fetal growth occurs in the last 3 months of pregnancy, so that is when you'll see the most change. |

I added this picture to another string, but I will put it here too, as I believe someone asked to see a current photo. This was taken yesterday morning. We took her trail riding and camped one night. I am concerned about that line low on her ribcage showing up there. She does not have heaves. It is something that I just started noticing. Is it just due to excess flab that is hanging down, or is this something I should be concerned about, particularly since she is still being ridden? Thanks.
