Rio sure wants to make sure she keeps me busy hey!!
She is 13 weeks old tomorrow and just yesterday I noticed that she has some swelling just infront of her teats - You know when the mare begins to bag and there is a bump right infron of her udder that seems to swell first and it is fluidy feeling ,very soft, and it has a sort of dip in it as though it is seperated down the middle as the udder itself is....? Well it is exactly like that! And I would probably not be worried about it only Rio had that infection at her umbilical cord when she was really little and I wonder if the two might be connected, although the bump of her umbilical cord has shrunk almost right back to nothing and there has been no change to that since the arrival of this new edema (as yet anyway)
Thanks for taking a moment guys to answer my post.
I had a vet appt today because the vet said that she wanted to scan the foal to make sure that when the other vet gave treatment for the original onfection he didnt just clear up the wound and seal any infection in. In order to have Rio scanned it meant I had to take her to the vets and have it done there, so today - she had her first experience on a box AND of travelling!!
She loaded like a perfect babe (with a little feed for encouragement) she travelled perfectly while eating mums hay (mum stresses when travelling so doesnt eat her hay herself) and they unloaded perfectly the other end. They went into a strange stable and then were led to the scanning area while mum was backed up into the stocks, baby was examined and pushed and poked and then we got them back onto the trailer to go home! Im soooo impressed with Rio : ) Everyone involved today comented on her good behaviour and on her size!! and I am so very proud today : )
Mum dragged me back off the box the first time because Rio wasnt following quickly enough for her liking, but she went straight back on and waited while we coaxed Rio up - So all turned out well in the end.... Plus the fact the vet said the swelling is nothing - she doesnt know why its there but she certainly isnt worried about it and she didnt wantto bother scanning because it would probably have meant some sedation and she really didnt see the point. So all is well back at the ranch : )
Now I have to start a diet to stop baby getting any fatter - make sure she only has mums milk and perhaps a little hay - NOT MUMS DINNER!
Thanks for your comments, just thought you would like to hear a good outcome on this : )
