Here's Grace - I couldn't get but one whole body picture from far away, she gets right up in the camera everytime! She's really growing and has so much personality. I'm gonna be out for 2 weeks with knee surgery so I wanted to post a couple of pics from this week... She's about 3 different colors right now. I can't wait until she finishes shedding her baby hair..

Hi all,

Sandra, Grace is sooo sweet.
Lori, Chu Kash is lovely, very athletic looking, what are your hopes for him when he is older?
Kim, how is rio's leg doing?

We are all so lucky to have beautiful healthy foals!

Bringing Griffin in tonight was a disaster, i lost him, so he then got all scared and wouldnt let me near him, and eventually when i did catch him slowly got him into the stable, the minute i let him go he went CRAZY, charging around, falling over etc. Dont know what had got in2 him! How is everyone getting on with leading/tying/feet picking up etc?
Hannah

Kassie, Flora has become quiet the pretty young lady there!

Hannah, I do not know yet what holds for Chu kash's future. He should be athletic, all racing QH blood in him.

Buddy is a solid 14 hands (see me grin :-) ).
Seems to have leveled out a bit, which is nice.
Dog quiet as always! Naps are sacred for him.

Hannah,
My colt took to everything fairly well. The leading thing is a "practice makes perfect" kind of thing. They are always resistant at first, but come around the more you do it.
I don't tie mine "officially". Just loop it around, and he's learned to stay put. He doesn't know the difference. I am just very leary of tying the young ones since their necks are so fragile. My boy is pretty tall and with a giraffe neck and legs to match...so, for now I'm holding off until he's a bit older and those bones are a little more solid.

Hi everyone. Thought Id pop in before I start work this morning.

Rio is 12hh at the withers at 11wks old, she is bum high at the moment so theres another spurt on the way no dount, please stop growing so fast! I think Rio will be about 16hh too - Id like her to be as much shorter than that as possible : )

Her legs fine thanks Hannah! Two days on and you wouldnt have known anything had happened. Its such a good job that they bounce : ) Rio likes to throw herself around a bit too when Im trying to lead her - I think she gets that from mum! Stubborn and bimbo, not a great mix : ) Shes good with her feet - always was, I dont lead often (still in recovery from the op) but she runs to me in the field so I dont need to. Like heather - I wont tie her yet, when she is being weaned or clse after I will do that. She goes backwards perfectly!! When I tug at her tail she steps back instantly and I can turn her in circles but I cannot make her go forward!! She just bunches up in the middle and digs her heels in the ground!! Grrrr

Kassie - flora is real pretty - is she out of Rosie, was that your mare? She has a very pretty head and such a beautiful colour...

I just love Chu Kash and of course all of the other foals, we are all just so lucky!!!!!

Well Checota is 13.1 hands at 4 1/2 months old. she just had a bath today and wanted to get some pictures to show you and to send to the APHA for her papers. She is really turning out nice! Hope you agree. I think this year has produced the most stunning foal crop I have seen in years. We ALL have so much to be proud of! I was lucky to have a couple of friends around to hold her(checota) for me, since mom was a bit anxious I had to put her in the round pen near by to take the pictures. :-)

I will have to agree we all do have such stunning foals! :-)

Thanks Lori for your kind comments on Checota, Since both Chu Kash have running blood coursing through thier viens, it is not out of the realm of possibility that we breed them together as long as Chu Kash is a stallion by the time she is breedible. They would produce gorgeous foals together I think. Her sire is Lucky Two Straws which has Jack Straw on both his dams and sires side (and many other stakes winners). Jade has a reg. TB dam and her sire is Burr's First Down (Dash for cash son). So I can see a very nice foal coming out of that breeding (man am I looking to the future or what)? giggle.

Jan if we do not look to the possibilities of the future than what do we really have? Yes Chu kash carries Dash for Cash (up close)on both sides of his pedigree so it would be a good bloodline mix. MMMMMMMMM......

Hey all,
Jan H, thank you for your encouraging words, this is my first foal and i dont think im just being biased when i say he really is gorgeous, so being able to share him makes me even more proud!
Just a quick question to those more experienced than me - just recently i have noticed he is badly over-reaching and hitting his front legs with his back feet when he trots and walks. Is this always going to be a conformation fault, or will he grow out of it?
Keep the pictures coming, you all seem to have gone quiet, i keep logging on to see more photos of our babies, and NO MORE POSTS. So come on everyone, get those cameras clicking again!!!!!!

Hi

Huey came 3rd!! Absolutely over the moon - he was really well behaved, and i loved every minute of it. It was his first time out in the lorry, first time away from home and was great! I was expecting him to be a little horror, but he was so fascinated with being somewhere new he forgot to be naughty (only one little rear when another foal got excited). He got pulled in 2nd to begin with but the knock on his leg was still a little bit visable so he got pushed down a spot - but i cant complain at all as he got his first rosette and won £10!! Cant wait for the next one - seriously encourage you all to take them out if you can, such great education for them.

In addition to this he canters everywhere at home and has looked to have a bit of weak trot but the moment he got in the ring out came this flashy lovely powerful trot (so am v.pleased about that too!)

I love foals!! Cant wait till I put Doubtful back in foal next spring - its been such good fun x

I am hoping there was a photographer there on Sunday as would love to show you some more pics, sadly my folks were away so it was just me and my friend otherwise I would have had some piccies taken!

Hannah...WELL DONE!! I would love to take Rio to a show but unfortunately mums behaviour is probably more of a problem than hers and I dont want Rio getting any ideas!! Plus mum has her poorly feet so couldnt be shown anyhow nowadays.

Iam really pleased for you that he has already made his first cash prize for you and that he was placed third before he is even a year. Glad to hear you enjoyed the experience : )

Raven!! Is that Kash in that first picture with all the gear on?? How old is he now? He looks fab : ) and he has a nice lot of muscle on him too... Good Job girl!! Well done to you too : )

Congrates Hannah Mac on Huey's 3rd place great for the first time out!!!!! Your right it is great education for them!

Chu Kash looks wonderful and he looks great under a kiddie saddle! I can just tell he is going to grow up to be a very nice and well mannered stallion!

I agree with you Hannah M. lets keep the pictures flowing!!!! It is so nice to watch these babies grow up right before our eyes, and makes the time until the 2007 foaling season seem shorter in some way.

Kim, yes that is Chu kash. Thanks for the compliment. He is now 5 1/2 months old, 13.2h and could careless about all the gear on him. Just takes it in stride. Better now than later that he accepts this, not so much horse to try and break later on. It will all be just part of life! All of that dressing him up helped. I brought him out for the trainer to see like that and they LTAO and asked "where does the quarter go!"

Jan, Thanks for the compliment and I think so too!

Maggie had her colt! Saturday morning! She had some complications with a retained placenta, but, after contributing my paycheck to the vet, she's all better! Baby is beautiful! Vet says she can't believe his size. What a great mare Maggie is! I am so proud! We named him "Goliath". I think it suits him well.

Thanks to everyone! He is so sweet! We decided the second we saw him that we would keep him. I'd like to do a little dressage on him. Maybe some hunter/jumper if he has the heart for it. My husband was even thinking of not cutting him. He sure would make some pretty babies. That all depends on his attitude though. Time will tell. We have a Clydesdale stud colt now that just turned 1 and has not interest in those mares at all. He would rather just lay around in the sun and eat. I think he's a reincarnated dope smoker from the 60's. We're just hoping he will figure out what his wiener is for :-)

umm Dottie how long have you been into breeding horses? Most draft horse colts mature at a different rate than say your average QH type stud colt, when he gets around 2 or 3 years old I think you will see him eyeing the ladies, right now he is a growing youngster and will not fully mature until around 4 or 5 years old, but like all stud colts the plumbing is there to impregnant a mare at 9 months on so watch him closly, but do not give up on him just because he is just a year old and still thinks mares have cooties. giggle.

Will get some pics at the weekend but I measured Huey yesterday and he is 53" and is 14 weeks old. He has been filling out body wise recently but seems to have had another growth spurt and looks all legs again! Not the same size as Goliath up above but still big enough for me!!

Incase your interested : )

Rio nowadays - these were taken on the 25th Aug mainly, there are just a couple that were the 17th July and you should be able to tell because she tends to look more orangey in those ones.

Sorry they are not the best pictures... they are from my mobile phone!!

Enjoy:

Kim- she is adorable, she does have a very nice head! arnt they the true definition of "curious"?
Jericho is very curious, but the arab gets the beter of him so he tends to be super alert when he is investigating...you know, snorting, blowing type...and prancy! I will have to go out and measure and get some new pics for all of you...he is changing colors on me...his battle wounds from his rough housing have grown in with nearly black hair, and his neck hairs are growing in black...cant quite figure that one out...anyway everyones babies are getting so grown up and beautiful...wont be long now before the next crop comes in! :-)
and dottie...WOW!!!

Oh, wow, really close! Have just had a look at masterpiece, he looks lovely, were you disappointed that huey wasnt coloured? (not that you should be cos huey is very sweet)
Griffins sire is a stallion called Grafik, owned by the Guiness family (who own and bred Tamarillo), i am thrilled with the result, and i got a bay colt with white bits, exactly what i wished for, had it been another chestnut filly, i would have pushed it back in, and ordered another. Cant be dealing with chestnut mares, have owned 3 2 many! I cant seem to access the vidoe clip of huey, is that just my pc?

Not disappointed at all (if i'm honest i would have been happy with another chestnut filly! I just love mine!)

Nice stallion Grafik - what do you intend to do with your foal?

Video clip was off my dads camera - think you need Quicktime to view it. I'll see if i can get it converted to media player

Hi Evie, how you and the family doing, Cisco is such a fine looking colt I am sure he is going to turn out to be a fantastic looking horse for his new owners, he had the perfect start with you. Hows hubby doing? It can be so hard to let go of the little ones, Checota will stay with me for life, but the others unless they are fillies and have raced and done well, they are sold as broodmares somewhere else, most prove to be great barrel horses or barrel horse broodmares. I never worry about them after they are sold. I check prospective buyers well and at the sales most fetch such a high price that I know they are not killers, no killer buyer would be willing to pay 2,000 to 5,000 plus for a horse Thank God. I have missed seeing you and a few others on the board lately. Good to hear from you Evie, keep in touch your missed!

Hi everyone! Checota just turned 5 months old, how quickly they grow up..."WHERES MY BABY""""""? giggle. thats ok, I love her just the way she is! She is an adult horse in a foal body, nothing phases this girl. I can just about do anything with her. In fact the hard part is getting her away from me to take a picture of her LOL. Enjoy.

Halito (Hello) Lori where you been keeping yourself? Where is my updated snapshot of my God son?????? How is he? still as handsome as ever? Been to any shows with him yet?

Hannah that is the right way to have a colt, where it is bonded to you to follow you like a puppy dog, even when at times it is annoying....better then having one you have to chase all the time. Give me a puppy dog anytime over an obnoxious run away foal. :-)

Anyway, here are a few more piccies taken yesterday, he is now 14 weeks!

Hannah - He is absolutely Gorgeous!! He has gone that lovely rich shade of Bay the same as mine is going, only Rio's legs are only just starting to be REALLY black - that baby fur was really holding in there : )Rio is nearly 17wks now, doesnt it go by SOO fast! Hopefully I will get to spend some more time with mine at the wkend as I was away at another show with friends the one just gone. Glad to see everyone is keeping us up to date, theychange soo much you have to see it to appreciate what they turn in to : )

Jan - I have to agree with the puppy dog thing - My mare is sooo ignorant, I feed her, pay for her and pick up her poo and she is retired and hates me!! Why do I do that? The foal os far more sociable (although it has quite selective hearing)

Kim, gee a foal with selective hearing ummm...I can not believe that...LOL par for the course...as to why you do that for a mare who seems to hate you...because we love challenges!!!!! we feel that its only a matter of time and patience and they will turn around...hold on to that hope. I have had a few mares like that and eventually 99% do change but there is always 1% that do not come around.
the odds are in your favor that this mare will change...I am keeping my fingers crossed!

Hannah M. Griffen is turning into a very handsome young man! Nice conformation and love the giraffe impression!!!!

LOL - I have had her for 5 years, She loves me really, she just does a very good impression of a horse that hates me : ) Mostly I do everything with her because with others she throws tantrums so I know there is some love there somewhere : )She is just unsociable - and hey, in many respects Im much the same - they say that about pets and their owners dont they?? LOL

Here is a piccie (taken on my mobile phone so its not great) of Rio's new colour. Much like the lovely Griffen. Im soooo pleased with her I cannot begin to tell you - I had more pictures but I didnt want to bore you all. This is her playing with my old field buddy.

Kim, you shouldnt worry about the weather, most artists come out and take photos and work from those! I have a watercolour of Chaffinch (my mare), pictures taken around this time 2 years ago, it was completed by the spring the following year, took ages, and it cost a bomb (was done by my best mates aunt, so its worth about £600 and i paid £300) However, it was the best decision ever to have it done!
Here is a picture of it!
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g59/hkvmills/Chaffpaint.jpg
You would need to get the photos done soon tho, so ur girl(s) is looking her best!
Thanks for all the comments on Griffin!

Ahhh - what a sweetheart!! It strange for me to see that lovely pink skin on his hind, both of mine have dark skin and seeing him it reminds me of a proper little baby : )fresh pink skin.
He looks a lovely propertioned baby and his colour is great too - you must be very proud : )

Hannah - thats an excellent photo of the painting, I was hoping to get one a bit like the third of your prof photos but with mums face and baby under her chin...?
The best shot I have so far of anything Id like to see in a painting is this:

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c172/clafairy/Crimson%20Scenario%20RIO/DVC0009 3.jpg
But my mare looks awful! She has that big belly that just hangs down now that there is no foal filling it!! : )

I like one I have of the foal investigating the flowers too but unfortunately I cut mums head out on that one!! I should have considered more closely when I took the pictures perhaps... but at the time you just get a bit click happy dont you and snap piccies all over the place!

I love all of the pics you have put on this strand! They are all so nice. Hannah, The last pic that you posted shows such a handsome face!
I do not know if I can post this here, but I do contemporary portraits of horses. My website is www.geocities.com/rollinghorsestudio . I am always looking for interesting subjects to paint!

My mare is due in March and I can't wait so I can post my future little one!

Hi Kassie,
Thanks for the compliments on the art. The paintings are larger acrylic on canvas originals and start at $300.00. I don't want to get in trouble with this site, so please email me at the address on the website in my previous post, and I will fill you in!

Kelly - I took a look too and there were at least 5 I particularly liked!! I think the third on there was my favourite though. They really are good.

Now I just know your all thinking oh god - not more : )
but I took a picture of Rio as I am so chuffed with her new colour : ) I know she looks a little on the 'round' side, but the winter is closing in on us and pretty soon they will be dropping some weight no doubt when the weather changes so I dont really want to restrict the grass now, they arent being fed hard feed as the grass is still good at the moment so Ill just stick to my plans for now.
Heres the piccie.....

Kim, I would say Rio looks fine. With a growth spurt and winter she will trim down nicely. Has she lost all of her foal coat? If she has she is a nice dark red color. Job well done to you!

Jan- Just stopped in to say "hello" again,it's good to be missed, I've got to get back to posting again regularly. Hubby is doing well, I'd say nearly recovered. This has aged him a lot, but he's a tough old bird and I think he'll be around for several years to come. Cisco and Sage arrived safely in their new home in CO. I hope their new owner takes good care of them both and enjoys them a lot. Avery has filled Sage's hoofprints for now.. she's doing well. Sasha is in foal and starting to show ( so is Avery but she's not showing much yet ) I bought a gray filly, a grand daughter of Hollywood Dunit by a Smart Chico Lena mare.. ( Lost my mind for a minute at a sale.. what can I say? ) Anyhow, we have 5 babies on the way in the barn this winter, about half what we bred last year but I'm excited to see the colors.. all but one COULD be buckskin.. I need to have Avery's color genetics tested..I'm dying to know if she's a smokey black or just a very dark bay.. do you know the link for that site? Better scoot, lunch is over. Sorry for the long post! Hello to all! Ev

Just thought I would show you some more photos at 1 week old. By the way, I changed his name from Whiskey to Demon. It suits him better. He is Angelsí little Demon. He acts like it too!

Thanks Raven : ) Glad to hear someone say shes not too fat that I should be worrying. I love the red that she has gone, just hope when she sheds after the winter the colour is still just as good. She still has some light baby fluff on those legs but I know that will be black underneath. Im very pleased to say the least.

Ev, glad to hear Hubby is doing well - sounds like you still have your hands full at the barn! Good to know Avery is coming along well too.

Gail, love the name change - he is already a lovely colour huh? Be nice to see the changes in him as he grows - keep the updates coming!
Be good o see some more of the likes of buddy, chu kash, jericho ect too....

Shelley- that is truely a buttermilk buckskin, she's very light, what a pretty gal!

Kim- nice to hear from you, things have slowed at the barn a little, half as many foals coming next spring and we've lightened the load horse wise a good bit. I have two that I'll haul to a sale next month and HOPEFULLY won't be bringing back home with me, that will put me down to 3 with two on the way, a far cry from the 11 I used to have! Hubby has also reduced his numbers by about 10 head, chores are easier and the feed bill is MUCH less these days!
I just need to stay away from horse sales so that I don't get back up to my previous record numbers!!! LOL
Kris-hope you are well, drop me a note and let me know how that fellow of yours is doing, any foals coming your way this spring? Ev

Sorry about all the animal issues, it's not been a stellar year for us either. We've lost more this year than ever.. and I do believe we've got a rough winter ahead of us! Let's hope things improve soon! ((( hugs ))) Ev

Thank you Ev! The pal filly, is that the one that you recently purchased?

Finally was able to measure Chu kash properly with a stick and he is 13.1(withers)and 14(hip)and weights in at 565lbs. It seems like he has grown since the last time I had measured him but I suppose it is an illusion as they grow and fill out.

Lori- no, she's one we raised, we kept the two fillies we had born out of Listolena and still have one of his stud colts left. The filly I bought was a grand daughter of Hollywood Dunit out of a grand daughter of Smart Chicolena. She's actually gray, her bottom line goes back to Mr Gray Illuminator who was homozygus gray. She's not a bad looking filly, but I regret buying her now, it was an impulse purchase so I probably won't keep her long. She's a good bit larger than the other fillies..when they finally get in the winter pen together, she'll dominate them all!

Wow Chu Kash looks like a proper little horse now! Sounds like he is taking to life and the big wide world very well!

Well Huey went to his show yesterday with his Mum - terribly behaved at times but the judge loved him

Results were

Small Hunter Broodmare - 3rd
Small Hunter Foal - 4th (cos he was sooooo badly behaved!)
Lightweight Broodmare - 2nd
Lightweight Foal - 1st

And he was reseve champion overall, got beaten in the final by a very very nice foal who was much better behaved than mine! However the judge said he was a cracking foal and its all about what they do on the day (if only he had been a bit better behaved....arrgghh)

Will post some piccies later

Hxx

Lori- we ended up having two fillies out of 11 foals I think.. 9 stud colts. I lost the one, then we had one that was not quite right between the ears.. we did loose one after weaning this summer to collic as well.. the rest have been sold with the three out of Listo remaining. The stud colt would have been sold but he cut his knee and it's just now healing up well enough for him to be ready to go.. so for now, we still have him. ( also, the two fillies were in the last couple born, so maybe I hadn't posted about them? ) One is sorrel the other palomino.. they are some nice babies, but tiny.. which is what we want for our lesson horses.. mini quarters!

Jan- Thanks for the welcome back! I've missed being part of the group.

I've been short on camera moments I'm afraid and Cisco is now in CO so no more photos of either him or Sage I'm afraid. I will post some of Avery again eventually though as I want your input on filly/colt for next spring. I'm thinking maybe filly, she's definately carrying different than last year. Sasha, my other mare is showing WIDE already, betcha it's a stinking colt. As soon as they get a bit further along, I'll give you the chance to do your magic!

Lori- mini QH's are just my own term for these shorties we've been raising. They are good for just about anyone who doesn't want to fall off a giant horse. (including old people like me!) With having so many small children riding, we've found that the QH temperment and the small size works really well and we've really had a market for these smaller horses. (sometimes it's hard to keep the mares long enough to get any offspring out of them) We have a mexican friend who generally will want our small colored horse colts, they love them in CA, NM and Mexico for their rodeo horses. They are short, but still wide and stout so they are just as strong and a larger horse. I'll try to post some photos of little Lena the palomino filly, I just have to FIND the camera first!

Well this place is just not the same without your postings. we ALL miss you and when your away I believe that most everyone notices it. As far as gender predicting if my luck holds out I would be honored to look at your mares. I seem to do better if they are in their 9th or 10th month. Most of the foundation QH are around 14.1 ro 15 hands, then appendex horse took the QH to new heights (QH X TB)= Appendex. Many poco bueno and three bars line are foundation QH based. They are the blue bloods of the QH lines which means they are original Quarterhorses and not the QH of today. Glad to see that they are coming back in fashion. I would hate to see the foundation bloodlines lost.

Jan- what an ego booster you are, I didn't even think ya'll had noticed I was gone..lol. I'll drop in as often as possible, and hopefully, we'll have a lot to chat about this next spring. We'll have a quieter foaling season in our barn, 1 in March, 2 in April and 2 in May and we're done.. (and no more surgery for hubby so that should help the stress levels too)
Though I will tell you he was thrown this weekend while trail riding (long story, that shoudl NEVER have happened) and has an injured shoulder now. Can't raise his right arm so back to the old MRI booth he goes.. I told him we may have to trade his horse for an electric wheelchair if he keeps this up!

Ev- Was hubby on one of those mini qh?? :-) Thank god it was not one of those giants! :-) lol... Sorry to hear that hubby was injured, hope he is feeling better and okay! Oh...thank you for the info on the mini qh. Kind of thought that is what they were but you never know. Great to see you posting again. Looks like we will be on some of the same foal watching times next spring. 1 in March and 1 in May. Good luck and let us know how hubby makes out with his shoulder.

Jan- I agree with you on the foundation qh and appendix lines it is nice to see the foundation lines coming back in to play.

Lori- actually he WAS ! but MINI got him into trouble this time, we were crossing some pretty deep water and his horse was trying to swim, only it wasn't quite deep enough for that, the horse stumbled, so Charles spurred him a little ( a little TOO much) and he started lunging and bucking across the water up the bank and into a prickly bush.. that made matters worse of course, when hubby finally came off the horse stopped and looked at him like, "what are you doing down there?". My mare is larger, I put my feet up on her neck and just waded right across. * I might add this was her first water crossing, she's a pro!!! ** for the record, I don't like hubby's horse, and I wouldn't ride him.. for just such reasons as what happened Saturday. I'd say he's probably got a torn rotator cuff, but the MRI will let us know for sure. BTW- this little buckeroo is 100% foundation bred and largely poco bueno breeding, he's just a knuckle head.

Hi Ev,
I too am so glad to see you back on line!! You have touched me with you kindness, knowledge, and humor. I am so sorry to hear about your husbands fall. I hope it is not a torn rotator cuff! I finally got my mare that lost her full term foal on delivery last April in foal again. It took 3 AI attempts. I am looking for a very late July baby. Looking forward to reading more of your posts. jan

Oh Ev.....I don't know if I would have been lmao at your hubby (just imagining him in the prickly bush) or scared shitless watching him fall! You painted a great picture of the ordeal. All in all I hope he is okay and did not severly damaged his shoulder. You are very lucky to live in an area where you can go trail riding like that! Must be wonderful!

I hope your husband is ok Evie, I tore my rotator cuff and it took so long to heal, and many many hours of rehab just to gain 85% motion back it is partially froze and only pains me when the weather gets damp, heck I know the weather before the weather channel does LOL
Sandy, very cute little filly, but when I click on the link she looks cut off at the knees. bet the rest of her is just as beautiful as the top 1/3rd is.giggle what a sweet face!

Evie next time hubby wants to cross that river with a short horse have him bring the water wings ok? LOL I hope he is feeling better! (((((Healing hugs))))))))

I love the foundation QH too Lori, we are on the same page. :-)

Lori- I have to tell you the truth, I was LMAO at least till I saw him get up with his arm hanging limp, and then I had to stifle the glee at seeing the "master instructor" get his butt dumped off his awesome horse.. And don't think I'm too nice to feel a little "extra" proud that my 3 y/o filly who I'd never ridden out on those kinds of trails or EVER crossed water with just went right thru without a hesitation. (in fact, I told him I'd train him a GOOD horse so he'd have something decent to ride when we go camping..LOL. (am I evil or what?)
Jan O and Jan H- Thanks for the well wishes, the MRI went well this morning, he's at about 40% movement now, but they did see some fluid in there, not sure what that indicates, but I'll keep you posted on the results.
Sandy- pretty filly, gotta love that bright white, it just HARD to keep it that way!
Hannah- I bet your little Grace is going to be gray, just like her momma. She'll probably shed off dark and then go gray gradually. (at least that's my vote) Ev

Lori- I just couldn't help it, the devil in me came out..hubby is SUCH a chauvenist,I have to take every opportunity to put him in his place. Otherwise, there's no living with him. Believe me, he's the first to say, "get up, dust off and don't be a wuss" when anyone else gets tossed. No word on the MRI yet, so hopefully, all is well.

Hope he is doing better, one thing about a bruised ego, after about a week or more, it becomes inflated all over again, a mans ego is like a boil, sure you lance it once and it gets smaller, but if you dont keep squeezing it down it blows up all over again sometimes larger then it was originally, so keep squeezing that hubbys ego and it should stay manageable. LOL I ran my husbands ego over with the car, took his ego from 47 PSI to 10 PSI in 7 seconds. LOL

Kris- Hello again! I wondered how you were doing, I'll have to read about your mare, I wondered how that was going. Thanks for the kind words, ya'll are just too sweet. I just like to share my experiences and what's worked for us over the years, I wouldn't claim to always be right, but it never hurts to get new ideas about things, that's for sure.
Lori, Jan, & Jan- Hubby is going to be fine I think, no immediate word on the MRI, so I'm betting it's just going to take some time to heal, otherwise, they would have called us by now and his EGO will be back intact in no time I'm sure.
Just have to tell you girls I've already started my annual "worry phase". Shasha looks big.. she's a two year old coming 3 and really pretty good sized but a little short in the back so I guess I'm seeing the baby more than on Avery. This makes me wonder, "twins?" which would be crappy. I did have her sonogrammed, but errors are possible with those as we all know. Avery on the other hand keeps me guessing, "is she still bred?".. she's hanging more low in the back of her belly rather than showing width too much yet. The other bred mares really aren't that big yet, so I'm probably worrying for nothing.. I don't know WHY I do this to myself every year.. I just wish April would hurry up and get here! Ev

Evie how far along are the mares? When was Shasha bred? to look so big on a maiden I think I would be worried too. Remember my maiden Digger? UL sound missed her twins and she aborted at 9 1/2 months. It was a devastating blow and we got her infoal this year just to have her absorb it at 2 months. You may just want to have her rechecked for your own piece of mind. Then again, since she is short backed she may just show a little earlier. you just never know. I pray that everything is just perfect and that they all turn out to be fillies!

Hey all, it's me again.
Jan- Sasha was bred the end of May, she and Avery were bred the same week. She is smaller than Avery and shorter backed, but I'm surprised at how round she appears already. I need to check how far along she is to see if I can get her ultrasounded again just to be sure

Evie, if she was bred the end of May then even if she is palpated any experienced vet should be able to tell you that she is pregnant by the absence of the uterus (it may have dropped down below the pelvic rim) by now. My maiden mare does not look pregnant at all she is a QH, in fact she is 5 months along now but you would never know it. Not all mares, not even maidens carry the same (but of course I am not saying anything you do not already know). Good luck with all of them, they are so pretty.

Hannah MI. Huey looks wonderful looks like a HUNTER to me. He is a beautiful sporthorse you got there, love that one striped hoof in the back, what a looker he is.

Hannah Mc. Sounds like you got a normal colt there, they all go through stages some stay in each stage longer than another, but they all show thier A.. once in awhile. It will be better in time hang in there! It is perfectly normal for a foal to gain weight once weaned, it is amazing just how much they gain when they no longer nurse and fill their bellies completely with a high quality solid food. :-)

Jan- Sasha is very round, could be partially a hay belly from lack of work right now too. She's probably fine, I had her checked twice, the second time was right around 90 days, surely they'd have seen two if there were twins, don't you think? I think she's just short backed and small, Charles "says" that when they don't get much exercise they tend to have more fluid too.. so maybe he's right. Anyway, I've got my worries building for the next few months ahead. I'll worry IF Avery is pregnant, and IF Sasha has two in there! She's approaching 5 months now, I believe her first cover was the 24th of May, then the 26th, after that, she was out..could be she stuck on the first breeding..I can only hope.
Hannah (with the kicking colt) I do hope you are chastising that young man, the bigger they get the harder it is to correct such behaviour. My little gal got a taste of the lunge whip after backing me into a corner of her stall when I tried to clean her water bucket. It took me a while to convince her that she wasn't going to get spanked each time I came in the stall afterwards, but she's minding her heels now. (being against the stall wall and on the opposite side of the way out was not a very comfy place to be!!)

Ha ha sorry it does get confusing with the 2 Hannahs...thing is we also live about 40mins apart too - how freaky is that!!

Huey resorted to being all soppy and loving tonight, even my Dad said he was in a better mood. He does indeed get a telling off, one thing I can stand is a horse with no manners or respect, especially as they get bigger and stronger.

Will get the camera out at the weekend to take some pics, he is going the most odd colour on his neck too - cant work out if he is going to be dk brown or bay at the moment!!

Hannah MI - those pics of Griffin are lovely, what a super off the floor trot he has too . Plus he's got one of those lovely little noses which makes him look like he's concetrating too - adorable!!

Jan when I put my girlie in foal next year can you send filly vibes across the web!! As insane as it sounds to some i'd love another girlie, even a chestnut!!!

Jan- you know my heart felt desire is for little girls, but I know the odds are about 50/50 either way, surely they are a litte in my favor after the number of "males" that were produced LAST spring. You keep sending those female vibes towards Kansas though, I'll take any added advantage that I can at this point !

Lori- no kidding on the healthy part, I really would hate for Avery to loose her baby again this year, filly or colt, good healt IS most important!
It's getting cold here girls, down to 34 tonight..brr. Good horse owner that I am, I moved the weanlings last night (in the dark, in the mud AND in the pouring rain) from their pasture to the pen out back of our barn so that they'd have a shed to get in out of the wet cold. Cooper did NOT appreciate my efforts, it took a lairet rope and miles of skiing in the mud to get him in the barn. I ALMOST left him out there alone, as usual, the fillies had more sense.. I can only hope his neck hurt as badly as mine did last night for all the struggle he put up getting relocated. (once he was caught, he did fine being led, he just refused to let me catch him easily) My only revenge was we made a detour through the barn for a worming and a 5 way booster..and believe me, I thought of using a LARGE needle on him but didn't.

LOL Evie, I can almost picture what you went through and as for your feeling about giving him a little back BEEN THERE myself. LOL Why is it there is always one horse that wants to make it hard on you when your cold and shivering in the pouring rain and stuck in the mud. So glad you did not listen to that little voice saying 20 gauge needle 20 gauge needle LOL but it would have served him right...but then the guilt sets in. :-)

Hope your neck is feeling better. And I put in a little prayer for a healthy and strong filly out of your girl Avery.

Since this past foaling season when my mare had the surprise aborted twins at 9 1/2 months I have had three Ultrasounds of my mare this year, and I mean thorough Ultrasounds. My mare this year is carrying only one fetus. I can not go through that kind of heartache again. ((((((((HFV for Fillies)))))) to all who want them and for those wanting colts HFV for colts to you)))))))))

I sure hope we don't see any twins this year, I wonder if Jos can input on the hazards of a repeat palpation later on, just to be sure of the size (i.e. that there's only one in there versus two! ) I just worry that too much interference can cause an abortion of a healthy pregnancy.

I hear you Evie and do not blame you one bit! So glad your feeling better!

Well since your feeling through the rectal wall and if the pregnancy is past 5 months. I do not see how palpations can cause problems for a mare. However once they are that far along not too much can be done but wait. but it would be nice to know what to expect with regards to twins to be on the lookout for early foaling or miscarrage, so i think it is a great idea to seek Jos input!!Sso what say you Jos?
