Why is it when you have a horse that is your own that is in foal you turn into a neurotic mother ?
I have a TB maiden mare, who i think is around 305 days , i say i think because Venus was running with the stallion for 5 months and i am going from the last time i saw her in season. After that last season i took the stallion away from Venus so i know she cant be any less then 305 days, she was scanned at what i think was 4 months, the vet asked how far gone she was i told him and he did not disagree.
What i want to know is how long do you think i may have left, i cant post a photo of Venus as i havent got a digital camera. But i can describe what i see, firstly she started to bag up 13th July, i gave them a squeeze today and there is clear liquid coming out, she has milk veins present, in the past 3 weeks she has started to change shape, before she looked huge from the front and back, and now it seems to have dropped down, her vulva is a dark pinky colour but it hasnt really changed shape and her tail head is still normal. Any thoughts would be good to hear, i know that it is difficult without photos.
It sounds like she's getting close, but if she really is only 305 days then she probably has a little longer to go. Generally anything born before 320 days is considerd premature, but each mare is different and some consistently go "early" w/o any problems. When my mare was getting close her milk was the biggest indicator. Her tail head did get prominent, and her croup muscles very soft, but when her milk changed from clear/yellowish to white she had the baby the very next day. So I would continue to watch her closely, and check her milk every morning and evening if you can. Also watch for signs of her getting very restless and uncomfortable.
Thanks for the reply, ive been checking her milk twice a day and it is still clear and tastes salty . She better NOT have it before 320 days i will be gutted !
Try not to worry too much. I know I was neurotic too (still am even though she's here now), but my mare started bagging up early, and had yellow sticky milk and I was worried she'd deliver early too. Then as it turned out, her milk stayed that way FOREVER before finally turned white and she ended up going 350 days! So you never can tell...these darn mares just love to drive us crazy!
I have a mare that was calculated at being due the 28th of July, and she hasn't begun to wax yet, however she is MISERIABLE!!! She is so stiff and sore that she can hardly stand up so she spends alot of her time laying down.:-( We have had her on bute for the last couple of weeks but it is not seeming to work. Any suggestions? I have called the vet, but still awaiting his call.
