I have a 15.2hh TB who is around 300 days pregnant she is in foal to my 16hh Breton ,she has always been on the slim side but im now beginning to think i need to feed her more she is fed daily,
4lbs of broodmare a mix
2lbs of Alfa A
1 1/2 lbs dried weight of sugar beet pulp
Ad lib medow hay
and has access to a paddock with a small amount of grass.

She looks well but her ribs are still easily visable and she just doesnt look very well covered for a horse that is eating constantly!
She is up to date with her worming programme also.
Do you think i should increase the concentrates alittle, i personally think i should but i have read some where that in the last month you should decrease the feed a little, so the mare does not have problems giving birth and then increase the feed again once the foal is born.

Has your mare dropped yet? Sometimes when they drop in the belly it makes their ribs more noticable. Do you have pictures of her you could post?

Mares are all different. My mare last year did drop at about 300 days she held on until 320 days but yes they can drop at 300 days. One way to help tell is stand behind her and see if her flanks look flatter than normal, or does it look like you belly has somewhat of a point at the bottom, it makes kind of like a triangle. here I have on my site changes to watch for in the foaling mare and on there I have pictures of one of our mares belly through her pregnancy here is the link:

Hope that helps some.

If she is not thin and she is getting all the right nutrition, minerals & vitamins I would just try and keep her weight constant as I understand it they are better to be slightly under weight than to be over at this stage - my mare is also TB of 16hh - her ribs always showed even though people comment on how fat she was/is!!
My opinion - hope it helps ; )

Thanks for the replys, i have looked again and i think she has dropped, before she looked huge, like a big barrel on little sticks now the belly doesnt stick out as much at the sides but is more low. Any way i have increased her feed she has 12 lbs of concentrates now a day aswel as ad lib hay and grass.
