Hi everyone! Layla & I are back - finally! First the good news - We are moved in to our new place and together again after about 10 years of boarding! I'm in heaven. She's starting to show signs of bagging up, and will be at 340 days this coming Monday. I can't tell you all what a thrill it is to be able to look out my kitchen window and see my mare any time I want! She loves it here too. The first thing she did when I put her in her pasture was roll - the "horse's seal of approval". Then, she was running and kicking up her heels!

The bad news is that during the move I came down with Bells Palsy, which is a virus that attacks the nerves in your face. Right now half my face is paralyzed & I can't close my right eye, so I have to have it patched. There's also an extreme amount of fatigue that goes along with it. I've been off work for almost two weeks now, but today I feel better than I did yesterday. I'm also having a lot of pain in my head and ear, which means that the nerves are trying to regenerate.

Anyway, I'm so glad to be back on the board, I've missed all the news!

Congratulations on the move. I'm glad you and Layla loves it. As far as your health, do all the symtoms go away or do you have it forever? I'll be praying for you that you get better soon. Good luck to you hope that foal comes soon!

Karen,
Welcome back. I have a friend who had Bell's palsy recently after having twins, and she fully recovered. It did take awhile. I sure Layla will keep you busy and entertained. Foal watching sure keeps me busy.

Thank you Donna & Beth! Now that we have internet again I've been reading up on it (Bell's) & over 85% of cases usually clear up within 2-3 weeks or so. Some cases take longer. Of course I hope I'm in that 85%! Beth, I'm glad to hear of your friend's full recovery. It's scary at first because you think you're having a stroke.

Again, I'm just so grateful to be back in the country again! The husband and kids are enjoying it as well. It's so peaceful at night. No more street lights or traffic! Lots of deer/wildlife.

Layla's not fully bagged up yet, but there's definite swelling and tickening in that area. The farrier was out to trim & thought she was showing signs of getting closer.

Karen - great news on the move, I still stare at my little herd during the day and I have had them here two years now! Good luck with your health...85% odds are good! We will keep you in our prayers.

I hope you had a great trip...wasn't it Germany?

No - I've never been to Germany, but I'm supposed to go on a two-week cattle drive in September out in Wyoming. Hopefully I'll be over this stuff by then! I was just off the internet for a few weeks, while we moved to our new place here & didn't have access.

I really did miss "chatting" & hearing about everyone's babies! Thanks for all your prayers.......

Hi Karen,
Your husband was very nice and updated me on you and Layla while you were moving. I'm sorry to hear of your Bells Palsy. I hope you make a very quick recovery. For those of you who have been members of this board for a while, isn't that what Ev's husband Charles had? Maybe some knowledge could be exchanged there...
Anyway, glad to hear Layla's happy in her new home! How is her leg healing? Best of luck to you and again, congrats on the move!!!! I can't wait to get a place in the country to be near Missy all the time (someday)

Somebody was going to Germany because I remember being very jealous!

I went to my father-in-laws house this summer where there is no internet access! I didn't even know these places still existed...I finally found a library and tried to check the board. That was the day it was down due to spammers...just my luck

Thanks Stormy - Dennis did mention that you had emailed. I'll pray that you & Missy can get a place in the country too. It happened when we least expected it, that's for sure! No foal yet from Missy? How is that going? Keeping my fingers crossed for you.

Kathee, I wonder who it is you're thinking of? Maybe they'll see your note and fill you in on their trip!LOL.

I had a good day today - much better than yesterday. I'm hoping by Monday I'll be ready to go to work again, but we'll see.

Only other news on Layla is that her tail was really "loose" this evening, but everything else is pretty much the same.

Time for bed - Sleep tight everyone..........

Kathee, sorry for butting in here, it was Kris Moos that has gone to Germany. I think at the end of the month she should be back.

Karen, there is nothing like having your horses in your own backyard!

You are so right!! - I was looking on the calendar and thought Layla was going to be at 340 days this coming Monday, the 24th. I misread the calendar a week, so she'll be 340 on the 31st. Then there's the full moon to consider on August 9th.....! I've been thinking of names - my husband actually came up with "Stryder" (Lord of the Rings) if it's a colt. I like that - it's a nice strong name for a gelding. I'm not sure about if it's a filly though; I think I'd have to see what she looks like first. I'm getting so excited - I have to pinch myself everyday!

Another good day Bell's Palsy-wise. I think I'm starting to turn the corner - I've only got one more day on the prednisone & I'm done with it, thank GOD!!

Hi - No foal yet - although I was checking her bag and she reached around and tried to nip me! She NEVER does that! I've also seen her reach around and nip at her sides some. Is it true the vulva changes to a deeper pink? I've been checking that & it's been going back & forth between normal color & then pinker. She still isn't bagged up all the way either. Are they supposed to be absolutely full before they foal?

Her leg is doing very well. That wound kote stuff is great!

As for me, I had a good day today. I've been sleeping so much the last few weeks. I didn't feel as fatigued today & actually hung some clothes out on the line. Tomorrow I'm going to try to put in a few hours at work. I can blink my eye about half-way now. My smile is still real crooked though.

She's hanging in there, or trying to in this heat. It's been 110+ degrees lately. This is very shocking for around here! I've been trying to keep part of the pasture watered down to keep it cool. She has lots of trees and seems to be doing ok. Her belly appears to be getting bigger. Just by the way she's been progressing and changing lately, I still think she's pregnant but am more likely to believe that another stud got to her and bred her later than I thought. I'll keep you posted...
How are things at your new place?

We love it here - it's so peaceful. We're right by a river, too, so the kids can go down and go tubing, or fishing. It's hot here too & supposed to get around 100 degrees this weekend. It would be nice if it cooled off before our mares foal, huh? I can't imagine it's too comfortable for them either. We have a window air conditioner that keeps the house cool enough.

If another stud bred Missy, can you estimate when her foaling might be? Layla's due date is this coming Monday, the 31st. Her vulva was much pinker last night. I've seen pictures of other mares on this website & she's starting to look like that, so maybe we're getting closer?!!

I don't have a clue. Missy was bred without my approval the first time around. I don't think my in-laws would have been dumb enough to do it again and especially to not tell me about it. There is a place in the pasture where the fence is low enough that a horse could probably jump it though. I guess anything's possible...

It's so frustrating isn't it?!! According to everything I've read, I shouldn't pinpoint a "due-date" on Layla either. I was grooming her last night & looking at her belly, checking her all over & finally my 18 year old daughter yells out the window "Mom! She's pregnant! Stop worrying about it!" Easy to say, but after the vet misses it not once, twice, but THREE TIMES, you kind of question, ok, is she just fat?? I still think she's pregnant though, because she's not fat all over & it looks like she's trying to bag up, plus her vulva has been changing color off & on. I'll definitely be keeping you all posted!!

I feel pretty good this morning - I can actually close my eye about 3/4rs. That's progress!

I'm going to switch to the "ready & waiting - foalwatch!" thread for Layla's updates. I really think she's getting closer!
