My foal keeps making this noise that is like a choking noise...?? It doesnt do it alot - but I have noticed it twice since she was born three wks ago. She doesnt appear bothered by whatever it is - She was doing it yesterday and she was still happy to be played with, lick me and then to go and gallop around the new big pasture I have given them... what could the noise be??
Thanks to all - youve all been very helpful on other topics.

I have two yearlings that "hiccup." They are both by our stud, so we joke that we must be breeding hiccupping horses. Theirs comes in a pattern about every thirty seconds for a few minutes at a time, and it has only happened a few times, most often when they are really nervous, like durring weaning. I thought it was choke the first time the filly did it, but we couldn’t find any thing wrong with her and she stopped after ten minutes. Our Stud has funny internal facial anatomy on one side, a tube that should connect his tear ducts to his nose doesn’t communicate, so my vet thinks it might have something to do with that malformation. Doesn’t bother any of them so I don’t worry.

Thanks Megan : )

I thought it was choke too both times I heard it for a minute but I looked in her mouth and couldnt see anything, her throght didnt appear to have anything lodged in it and she was fine so I just left it a while and she was fine.

Does anyone else have any ideas... I did wonder if it might be some sort of internal defect. When she is a bit older I was going to have a complete check up. what do you think the best age would be for that??

My chap had the same thing on Saturday - looked really odd but nothing wrong at all, he was quite happy to try and bite me and do 20 circuits flat out round the field - am sure if he had something wrong he wouldnt have bothered to go for a brisk run!!
