I recently rescued a beautiful palomino mare off a feedlot. I was told she was pregnant and flew to the lot to get her so she wouldn't foal there. Her bag was huge but no other signs of being pregnant. I got to thinking maybe she just had a foal pulled off her or lost one. So now almost 4 weeks later, this is what I know. She bags up on Sundays, she rubs her butt, she's moody, and she walks with her tail out (she's done all of these for the last 4 weeks) A couple of weeks ago I swear I saw baby bumps in her flank and a week later in her rump. I don't know what condition she was in prior to a month ago.
I am posting a link to my photobucket album, maybe someone can give me an opinion. The vet has looked at her but thats about it because she is not handled. She is young so probably maiden.
In one of the pix taken outside, of her right side, you can see a ridge along her rib cage. It actuall goes in about in inch then bulges back out. She does this every few days, on either side. The other side will look completely normal. Does she look remotely pregnant to anyone? And has anyone had/seen a horse that didn't show?
There is also a pix of her bag that was taken a week ago.
Sorry this is so long - I am waiting...just not sure what for yet! LOL!

Donna, The way you have it under your photobucket account, it requires a password. I don't think you want to give that out on here but I for one don't know how to do anything but one picture at a time through Photobucket so I can't help you there. I am interested to see your mare though!

Donna, I saw the pictures but I don't know what to say except that the horses are beautiful and they are lucky that you have rescued them and are willing to give them a good home and a second chance! I do wish you all the best of luck! The fact that the mare looks underweight to me (and I know this is not your fault...so please don't take offence ) may make it harder to tell if she is in fact pregnant or not. That said, the udder looks pregnant to me but I'm at a loss otherwise. Sorry! I am of course no expert. I'm hoping someone on here can give you the insight you need!

Absolutely no offense taken! I had the same thought that being I have idea what she looked like prior to a month ago, I have no way to tell if she's changed.
She's going to keep us guessing!
Thanks!

She is really thin so it can be harder to tell. But you know I too would have to wonder if she isn't pregnant but just had a baby pulled off of her.
My mare does get that ridge looking thing but she also has this buddha belly below it. LOL It looks right now like she ate a watermelon and its sitting sideways in her body.
I did rescue a mare a week before foaling that was thin like this and she did have a bit of a belly-not enough to look preggers though. Unfortunately the filly died from foaling complications. It was pretty sad. But at least she had a weeks worth of good food before foaling, the mare made a complete recovery and turned out to be a nice riding horse.

Thanks for giving her a chance. I hope for her sake she is empty.

Thanks Marci - k so how long does the bag stay big and would it keep changing in size or just get smaller if she had a foal pulled off her?

btw - thanks stormy - I think they are kinda cute myself =)

I'm trying to remember but it was at least a month for my mare to dry up. LOL and that is quite the story too. I tried to wean my filly at 8 months I built a fence between the two of them and kept them apart for a good month, it wasn't enough, the filly started nursing again and that was it-mom was back in milk production. LOL I at the time was sick and ended up being spayed myself so moved her to were she was boarded out, and mother and daughter were kept together until she was over two years old. By then the nursing had dwindled down to only when they had been separated for a while-more of a comfort thing. But it still took my mare a while to dry up, maybe 6 weeks? Got to remember this was 8 years ago. Before that it was 89 my last foals.
She is a pretty mare and I bet with more groceries will fill out to be stunning. Amazes me what people will throw away.
