this morning i noticed a large lump that is as long as the vulva and maybe a softball size in width and it is filled with liquid, i called the vet and he said she could have some infection and maybe she tore something. he gave me penicilin and said to give her that for 3 days and watch for fever. any advice as to what this may be , we have a country vet and sometimes he doesnt get into what kind of infection it could be etc.... thanks , kaye
Is the lump right next to the vulva? How many days ago did the mare foal? Was the foaling difficult at all? It sounds like a hematoma to me. It should decrease in size daily. Gently apply a cold cloth if she will let you. Good luck!
Taunya: My mare had to be stitched after the delivery and it absessed. It was a very large lump right beside the vulva and it was filled with liquid and had some "sore looking" spots on it. I applied warm cloths and it broke however it didn't drain completely so we had to have the vet put a drain in for a week. She is fine now and healing great! If she has/gets a fever then there is definately infection. Hopefull the penicillin works for you....
