I know I read it somewhere on here, but how soon before hand does the vulva change colors? Cause I just checked her about 4pm this afternoon and it was still a light pink, then I went to see her just now (8:30pm) and she was laying down, I had watched her for about 30 minutes before she got up, then I went over and checked her, and one of her teats is plumb full (still leaking yellowish clear) but her vulva is a DARK PURPLE now.... Should I be sleeping out there tonight? |

Sounds like she is getting VERY close. Might not be a bad idea. |

Marci, I'm so worried about going out there to stay now that it's dark. Worried that I'll spook her into holding it for another night... AUGH! Decisions decisions... Oooh, here's another thing... The bull that's in the corral next to her was going nuts. Doing his "mating ritual" through the fence at her while she was laying down... Do you think he knows something we dont? Would she be letting of some kind of a smell to make him think of a cow in heat? It was WAY weird because there's two bulls in there and they always ignore her. |

anj how long after she got up did you check the color? often the circulation changes when they lay, poop or urinate, so dont check color after any of those. but my mares got purple on the outer edges two days prior to foaling... good luck foaling soon if not already! |

Kris, geez, burst my bubble why don't you. ;) Ya, I checked her as soon as she got up. DANG! No baby last night. I finally came in the house around 3am and my hubby went out this morning to check before work and said there wasn't anything. Wish this storm would pass though. What about the bull acting weird? Anything there? |

well she may be sending a different odor as she approaches delivery that the bull may not recognise so he may not know how to act and is acting like he does at breeding time. i have heard that donkeys, and neighboring horse will act different as well, so yeah id keep an eye on her, sounds like she is probably pretty close! (not to burst your bubble, but mine had sticky yellow for a week maybe 2, then had white milk leaking for 2 days before she finally gave in and delivered!) and my other horses were different acting the days she foaled, the dog and cats must have knew as well because they normally would be in her pen, but not that day, they knew better! well good luck! |

Hi anj, Don't feel so bad. Lots of us are on the roller coaster ride with you!!LOL. We sleep if we can early and then stay up all night! Sounds like she is close, but like Kris said the pressure from her laying down would make it turn purple.. It is usually a real bright red color... I checked my mare one night and it was a pale pink 2 hours later it was a bright red. some show it, some don't. don't get frustarted.. it will come when it's ready, she is the only one who know's when she's ready though!LOL. Good Luck! |
