Hi everyone. I really love this website and could really use some advise. My thoroughbred mare foaled at noon on thursday and now has a pink-white discharge. Is this normal. The vet came out and gave the baby this tetnus shot, but basically ignored my mare. He didnt even look at the placenta! Can anyone tell me if this is normal? I hope I dont have to call him again, I need to find another vet. I am very concerned about this. Please advise! thanks

My mare had a dark pink-white-brown gooy stuff for about a week and a half. I am pretty sure as long as it is not green and looks infected it's okay. If she's acting fine and eating and drinking and going the bathroom. My mare did this instead of peeing for a few days as well. I've heard that it's just them trying to fix the uterus. If you look you may be able to find my old post.

Hi Elena, thanks for the imput. I did find your old post and feel a little better about things. I have so much time (and money!) invested in this, I just don't want anything to go wrong. Last nite the discharge didn't seem as much and turned an opaque color. I hope this is a good sign. A friend recommended an antibiotic. Any thoughts on that? I wonder what that would do to the milk. The baby is doing great. I did get in touch with my old vet and he said the antibiotic wouldn't hurt. I think I will probably have him come see them just to be sure everything is ok. Maybe I just worry to much!! Thank you again.

Nancy,
Just as women after childbirth have a discharge that starts out bloody and gradually becomes pink, then finally clear, mares go through this, too. My mare bled bright red blood for a while the first day. Over a few days it gradually became rusty-colored, then pinkish. Before it turned clear, it actually got thick and yellowish-white. I used to be a nurse, and in a human mother that would have been worrisome, but my breeder-friends weren't concerned. So I chewed my fingernails, and sure enough, in a few days it cleared up. It just means the uterus is contracting back to its former size, and remember, where the placenta detaches is basically a wound which oozes like any wound at first. I'm no vet and no expert after one foal (!), but pink sounds okay to me.

Susan,
Thanks, it does seem to be letting up now. It has turned white now. I called my old vet and he recommened an anitbiotic. I just started that today. I'm sure she will be fine. Now if my fingernails will heal!! I haven't had a foal in several years and forgot how stressful it is. Thank you again for your input. It is really appreciated. Helps releive the stress!! Thanks again!
