I wanted to know if 2006 year has been fillies or colts. My friend thinks it is a filly year. My mares had fillies this year. My mare had a colt last year. My mare Annie had a filly see her at
http://s42.photobucket.com/albums/e329/MBhorses/MBAnnie2006filly/
My mini mare had a filly as well
http://s42.photobucket.com/albums/e329/MBhorses/MBCricket2006fillymini/
So we had 2 fillies for 2006 no colts this year for us.Alot of people think of year for fillies and year for colts. What has 2006 been so far?
THANKS MELISSA

Hi all,
So far I have had two colts and one filly and still waiting on one mare. The people that bred to my stallion last year got 2 colts and one filly. One filly and colt are twins. They had no idea the mare was carrying twins and thought the mare was in trouble when she foaled the colt and then went down again, but then out came a filly. No problems - it is amazing. They sent me pictures from right after the birth, but I don't know how to put the link on this site.

I had 2 colts and 2 fillies.
It is funny, I followed what Jan H said on how to predict the sex by how the mare carries, and it was right on every one. Pretty cool, I think.
Here is a link to all of the new babies from this year. Just click under thier photos for more pics and a description of each.

By the way, thanks to everyone on these boards for thier support and help during all of my mares pregnancies. I don't know what I would do without you guys.

So far I have had 2 foals, both colts and both slightly early, but fully developed.

So 2 colt for me. I had done the nail test on them, and it said fillies for both.

I posted this somewhere else, but how many of you have tried the nail test first? Was it accurate?
This is what happenen with my nail test:
Swung back and forth across her back
Went crazy nuts all over the place
Started going in circles for a while
Went crazy nuts again
Swung back and forth in a line again...
This repeated for quite a while and it does it each time I check her.
Possibly TWO? Or something that's not quite formed yet? I know it's just for something to do, but I haven't talked to anyone who's had it do BOTH before... Any guesses?

Anj, I tried it on our maidens of a month and a half; and for bothit just hung still for about 4 seconds and then back and forth along the back; hopefully meaning colts. Only 9 months to go.

Daniel, ya, that's what I'd heard (that back and forth means a colt) but this was doing BOTH kept alternating back and forth between the two, it was crazy. :-) I don't think she's near big enough to be having two, but I guess it wouldnt' necessarily be out of the question... Anything could happen at this point! haha

Hey, Donna - That's exactly what I thought when I saw your little red boy! At least you got a lot more chrome. And here I was secretly hoping mine would be a non-fading black colt, like the stud. I really hope Gidget sheds out to a dark chestnut (almost liver) like her dam.

I had two colts and one filly born in the last week. Foal watch is over for the year. All three mares were pregnant in the right horn. My vet says right horn pregnancies are supposed to be fillies. He was right 33%

Pregnancy positions usually switch between horns from pregnancy to pregnancy if mares are bred on successive years, so that - according to your vet - would mean that you could predict a foal's sex if you knew what the first foal was, as they would switch sex every year as well....

Err.....

Note that your vet was also wrong 66% of the time....!!!! :-)

Jos that was my point.
I didn't know they switched horns every year. All my mares are being bred back. I will keep track this year and see what they produce, although I have to say while 2 had different sex foals from last year one was the same the last 3 years.
I always get a chuckle when he tells clients what they will get based on what horn the pregnancy is in. Some of them think it is gospel.

As the stallion dictates the sex of the foal, the side that the pregnancy is on (being a mare factor and considering my foregoing observation) is not going to correlate...

Ok I have to jump in. Just found this forum. We have two fillies, one molly mule(mini). So three girls. One of the mares has had only two colts so I was very happy that we got a filly. The other mare has had nine foals with a filly every other breeding. The last three years she has been bred consecutively. The only thing she missed this year was the black gene, and spots. From her record I really expected a buckskin tobiano filly, I got a palomino BS filly. She was bred to a perlino QH. Pictures can be seen on my sister's website of all three. www.rocknperformancehorses.com

I have been keeping track as best I can, on the foalcams. There have been 114 colts and 131 fillies. I have seen 50 of them. So, by that, it's a filly year. I have been doing it since the end of Feb.

Two of my mares that were pregnant in the right horn last year and had colts are pregnant in the right horn again this year,so they didn't switch horns. HUMMM

Hi everyone! Well last year I had two colts and two fillies born, this year..aborted twins (colt/filly) and a full term filly. My filly now almost 4 months old has fully recovered being kicked by my gelding, she has shed 75% of her foal coat, and since her mother is a minimal expressive sabino the spots on her flanks and back legs are showing roaning. she is such a pretty girl and is such a nice mover. She has Jack Straw (TB) on both sides of her pedigree, and you can see that racing bloodline...she is QUICK!!!!!!

Melissa, if you mean how far along does your mare need to be to guess on the gender of the foal. I usually like to see them at 9 months along to guess, I am sure that varies among others who also guess by the way a mare carries. Of course it is still guessing, I just get lucky sometimes. :-)

Thanks Kathee for your kind words, she has a kind eye and the gentle disposition of her mother. I am captivated by this little girl....I have not been this so caught up by a foal in over 10 years.

I am so glad that you are completely captivated by her. It is wonderful to have a special relationship like that.
I am headed to Choctaw, MS next week to do some research for a grant I am helping prepare for the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians. I think about you and your horses now when I work for them.
