Well, we know our mare is pregnant, but this time have NO clue when she was bred. By our best estimates, she was bred the 3rd or 4th week in June. This is her second pregnacy with us, third overall. The last time we totally MISSED it being first timers and the fact that we were diligently watching for the waxing, which NEVER came. We have separate her from the other horses, box stall her at night, bought a home security system so that we can wake up every so many hrs and check her instead of running down to the barn. There is one real difference in this pregnany than the last (well two if you count how HUGE she is with this one) and that her udder is so swollen that it is rock solid to the touch and very warm. She didn't get too upset when I checked it out, but I do not remember it being like that last time. I know that pregnant women can get an infection when they are pregnant or already nursing. Don't know if this is something that I need to worry about with the mare. ANY help would be GRATELY appreciated!!!
Hey I had this with my mini she was swollen up on one side and it was warm and she did'nt want me near it. The vet came out Monday,he expressed some of the milk on that side and said it was okay that she is problably gonna foal soon. If it was infected it would of come out like cottage cheese with a odor. Hope this helps....
Thanks for the responses. It looks a lot like your mare's udder Kathee. It seems to be a little bigger, but that may just be a breed difference. She doesn't mind me touching it. I actually went out there yesterday to feed and check on her, saw she was waxing a bit and squeezed a drop out to see what it was like. White and STICKY. We are hoping it happens soon. Doing the every hr watch with our camera, but had some excitement at 2 am when one of our other mares decided she wasn't getting enough attention and snuck under the fence. As if this isn't exhausting enough. Well, fingers crossed that it happens in the next couple of days. Again, thanks for the help.
If she is letting you touch it, she it is probably just normal. If it were a problem, there would usually be some pain involved. However; if she starts not wanting it touched that doesn't mean it is a problem. Sometimes those completely normal udders just hurt becuase they are so full.
