My 2 minis are supposedly pregnant. The vet won't do a ultrasound or palpate because of rectal tears. My maiden mini buckskin is huge and v shaped tummy, swollen in front of the teats and this morning I noticed a little more fullness in bag. No milk or anything yet. The other one teats are filled with milk, and stomach looks way smaller looking from the back of her and on the left side she is bulging. We recently found out her foal was still nursing on her (owners told me the filly was weaned)so I separated them. This site has answered more of my questions then the vet has.THANK YOU. But I know these are mostly full size horses. I looked at their peepers ( that's what my 7 yr old calls it) and there both light pink. My luck they will both decide to have them at the same time. I was given the month of May on the one exp mare and other they had no idea was pregnant but knew she was exposed sometime in May or June. I feel like I'm driving myself and my mares nuts. Ive learned not all minis wax. Can anyone shed some light for me? One of the breeders here in town told me since my hand is small to palpate them. But I have no idea what I'm feeling for. And don't wanna cause any damage by not being exp in this sort of thing. Thanks for listening (CLUELESS IN FLORIDA)
I would not recommend palpatating your minis. Can you ask your vet to do blood tests on your girls? You are right, many mini mares do not wax before foaling, but many of the other typical signs do apply. Look for relaxed tail and softening of the butt. Watch for the belly dropping to the V shape. Lopsided is very common and they seem to even out once the foal drops into position. My first mare to deliver this year didn't get her milk in until after she foaled...2-3 hrs post foaling. I had my mares ultasounded last fall, one was definatly pregnant and the second one the vet couldn't tell. He offered to palpatate, I declined and deciced to wait and see. She is 325 days along and baby wait and see is quite active while mom is eating. How long has the current foal been seperated from the mom? Hopefully long enough to build up for the next foal. It is important to be at the foaling, many mini foals cannot get out of the sac when born, or may need a little help during birth. Good Luck with your girls, keep us posted. Karen
Hello, my mini cricket foaled last night at about 10:15pm at 335 days, if I would not have been the foal would have died. You need to be there when the mini foals are born, to break the bag. The mini have a hard time breaking the bag. This is my first mini foal born here, I am so glad I was there to break the bag. you can see them on http://s42.photobucket.com/albums/e329/MBhorses/MBCricket2006fillymini/ Good luck, MELISSA
Thanks for the advice ladies... I appreciate it. I had the vet out yesterday for blood so I should know the results tomorrow. The one mare is bagged on one side and a little loosey goosey in the rump and the others bag is somewhat there but teats still tucked up and hiney isn't loose yet, but has the V shape bigtime. I'll keep you posted.... Pretty little thing , Melissa gotta love the minis....
HELLO, My new one day old mini filly, is bucking and kicking already. Does anyone have any ideals how to stop this? She does like want us to touch her at all, we imprinted her at birth. THANKS MELISSA
