i've been reading posts for a few months but didn't want to get to envolved because we were unsure of when our mare was due. i've been watching her closly for a couple of months because vet said march 12th she had about 30 days to go. Well she had more than that and i am happy to say that this morning we have cloudy milk. I'm so excited. we've had clear the whole time up till now. she is uncomfortable kicking her belly, bitting her belly, stomping and pacing...all off and on. she has not been rubbing her rear at all, but she is soft back there and her vulva gets long then shrinks back up so i can't say for sure that is relaxed. but anyways i'm so excited, and i'm so glad i found this site i've learned so much. thank you all, if anyone wants to wait with me i'd appreciate it. Husband says if you see feet then wake me up..He's tired of the false alarms..lol

by the way vets opinion about her being due differed from ours as she was with a stallion in poor conditions (so i couldn't not consider that he got her) From when we bred her she is 336 days

Donna, welcome! Don't worry about what the husbands say, I think they are just jealous of the mares who now occupy our time! {lol} Mine was telling me last night that he guesses I don't like spending time with him anymore so I have tried to cut down on my time on here when he's home As far as the time spent with my mare though, he is just out of luck because I only see her a few times a week! Anyway, it sounds like things are pretty exciting at your place. Be sure to keep me informed!!! Best wishes for a healthy foal!

Thank you Donna. I have to admit, I am quite honored! I'm sure everyone's tired of hearing me though {lol} I know in my heart that Missy is pregnant. If it turns out otherwise, it will be ok though. I've got her and that's what matters most! Afterall, I am not the one who bred her. But a baby would be great! I hope all goes well for you as well. Any pictures of your mare? What's her name?

no i don't have any pictures, i don't have a digital camera. She is a blue roan and 4 year old maiden, and her name is Angel and it fits her real well. She is a stand-offish mare but my month's of patience with her has gained alot of trust between us, makes my son mad since it is his horse but i love a challenge. She is his 4-h horse so she will not be running this year, so we have another one he will be using, she is blind but does awesome, we'll have to give her back at the end of summer since we are just borrowing her, i just hope i don't fall in love with her and not be able, lol we might have to buy her. oh well her and angel get along real well.

The name sounds like it does fit well! Angel, how sweet. Missy is the same way with being stand-offish. I honestly haven't even finished training her due to one set back or another (you can read the long version if you want on "369 days and still waiting") The way the breeding was handled just set me back even farther. But now I do have her trust, which is good and will work for, not against, us when we start training again. I am hoping to have her ready to ride this summer. I have a friend helping me but everything's on hold until after the foal is born. That's where I'm at now....
How cool, a blind 4-H horse! Is she blind in both eyes? How old is your son? I think my 3 year old is going to be just like me with horses. I have had a love of them since childhood and actually a way to get even the most shy horse to come to me. My daughter is the same way. Good luck to you!

no she is only blind in one eye..lol i guess i did not make myself clear. My son is 14 and he loves riding. His horse did so good last year (his first year) that he is alittle disappointed that he won't beable to use him this year, but i tell him that there are plenty more opportunities to get her back in there,.

Jan- I hope your right about carrying a filly. That's what i'm hoping for (the nail test says a colt)...but from what i've read you have a good average on guessing. Even though i want a filly (hearing they are easier) I'd still love and cherish a little colt.

Does she really look ready? I've looked at her so much I'm not sure i'm seeing any real big changes in her. Does the nipple in her udder get longer before birth or is that the way the stay-fat and short? I don't mean to sound dumb but this is my first also, and I don't want to miss this for anything, wouldn't be able to live with myself if i lost the foal for something stupid that i could've prevented. I know she is a maiden and anything goes but i'm just hoping that she follows some of the rules.lol wishful thinking I know.

Thanks for all your guys input. You don't even know how much i appriciate it. I like learning this way (real experiences) than just by what the "books" say.

She isn't doing anything today. Just laying alot and munching away at her hay. Her milk is still cloudy. I feel for stormy because waiting is a long, boring thing to do. I'm pleased that she has waited this long because the worries I had can now be put to rest. It will be fully cooked!!!

I hope everyone has a wonderful mothers day weekend. Hope to hear some thoughts on how you think angel is progressing.

Donna maidens do not read the foaling manuals but your mare has the softening in the hip her bag looks good and unlike stormy's mare you can express milk from it, that is a good sign too. I truely do hope that Stormy's wait is over soon I know how frustrating it can be. poor thing. Your mare looks close and she has dropped, look for wax but know that 25% or more mares may not wax before they foal. Hang in there and know that even if you miss it, do not beat yourself up over it, I watched my two mares this year and when I fell asleep with my maiden for just 20 minutes she foaled dead twins (they were not ready to be born). My other mare waited until I had to go to bed with the flu to foal, you just never know when it will happen with certainly, the mares can hold off first stage labor until they feel secure. I hope your mare is not so shy as to wait until you are not there, but I have foaled out over 90 foals and have only lost one due to a complication of a birth, but it is always better to be there just in case. I love my foaling cameras I can watch in the comfort of my own home. Worth its weight in gold. :-) your mare will be in my prayers for a safe uneventful delivery.

ty Jan. She is a shy horse but also a trusting horse, she lays on her side so while i scratch her big fat belly, she difinatly doesn't mind me (you'd think she was a dog!!). I put in a camera last weekend in case i am bothering her, so i can watch her, but i still go out a couple of times through the night because i want her to know i'm still there for her.

i'm not sure what it's called but i've seen it on ebay. Just put in a search. I've also read somewhere on this board that you can use pool test strips?? something about when the calcium rises and the ph drops you are close. i hope this helps.

Daniel, its called a predict-a-foal kit. It measures the amount of calcium in the milk I have found that 300 ppm usually tells me foaling is within 72 hours. Most of my mares foal from 300 to 500 ppm within 72 hours. Hope this helps.

Hi no baby, but what does it mean when they get white crystals on there teats (looks like table salt) Not alot just some on one of them. Her milk is still cloudy so I don't think it means labor is coming...just curious. I got a new camera for mothers day so hopefully I can post some more and better pictures soon.

Donna the crystals are normal but not a predictor, however I have had a few mares with it on their teats and when the crystals fell off and the udder looked full and shiney and rubbery looking they foaled withing 48 hours. hope that helps.

ok I need some help...Angel has this clearish white goopy stuff at the ends of her teats. It is also down her hind legs (it sparkles when the flashlight is on it) I took pictures of it but it don't show real well, I will try and post them. I don't know if this is wax or not and if i should be on gaurd. Just in case we stripped her stall and sanitized it. If anyone can offer any help I would appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

Donna~ Take a deep breath and try to relax You know I'm not an expert but I have heard that mares start "running milk" before the big event. That is what this sounds like to me. On the feed thing, from what I've heard most do go off the feed but some don't. I think you're REALLY close!!! Remember, get out a time piece (watch, etc.) a notepad and a pen and then record her events. You should probably even record when this goopy stuff appeared, where it's at, etc. Make sure to record the breaking of the water (if you're present) and the birthing process (leg appeared at this time, etc.) with the times so you can refer to them if vet assistance is required. I hope this helps a little anyway. Keep me posted girly!

You can find a spot where you can see her but she can't see you if you think your presence will upset her. I'm excited for you. I hope you have a foal by morning!

Donna, my foaling book says this....
"As pressure builds up inside the udder, the wax-like sustance will stop forming and may be replaced by intermittent or continual streams of milk dripping from the teats down on the inside of the hind legs and feet of the mare. When the mare begins to run milk the muscles along her croup will relax and she will appear to have suddenly lost condition in that area. Not all mares run milk and some don't even drip; however the relaxation of the croup always takes place and is a general guide that foaling will occur within the next 24 hours or so." It goes on to say that heavy mares (which you don't have) may be harder to tell the relaxation on but when the croup area is patted, it will appear soft and flabby. It also says that careful, regular observation (at least two times per hour) will be necessary if she is to be watched during the birth. So it sounds to me like you're on a roll. Good luck and I hope the info helps!

Donna your in the home stretch! looks like wax, some of my mares go off their feed and this last mare of mine took a bit of hay every turn around her stall while she was in first stage labor, watch for her rolling to reposition the foal (a very good indicator). remember that mares who feel they are being watched often do stall first stage labor until they feel secure that no one is around, good reason to have a camera on her. they may lay down get up and lay down alot, hold their tail up and sometimes off to the side as the time grows near. they may paw, swish their tail alot, push and rub their butt on things, bite at their sides and generally look miserable. Good luck! mare stare begins now my friend, hang in their its worth the sleepless ride in the end.

Hey Jan, Just a quick question for you...on Missy's croup not being relaxed..is that supposed to happen like a while before birth or once the milk starts running like my foaling book says (I have copied that for Donna above)? I am always confused on what you mean by, I think you put it "she's not softening up around the croup area" What is it supposed to look like and what exactly do you mean? I don't want to sound totally dumb on this...Keep in mind that I'm new to this whole game.

Donna~ Good luck!

Stormy 95% of my mares will relax enough at the croups that it will look like they are malnourished (the tail head will stick up and the sides around the tail head will sink in looking like a mare which has lost a large amount of weight) this usually begins 2 to 3 weeks before foaling with it the most noticeable the last week or so. only 25% or less of my mares ever stream milk before foaling most either bagged up fully less then a week before foaling many only a day or so before foaling, I would notice a little bit of sticky milk like substance on the hock or inside thigh around a 3 to 5 day period before foaling on 10 to 15% of the time.
This picture was taken 2 weeks prior to foaling, you can see how promonant her tail head is and see it is just beginning to hollow out at the sides of the tail head/croup area.

hi all, Angel is very aggrivated this morning, tail swishing, glaring at her stomach, kicking her stomach, rubbing her bum, and got up and down 3 times in about a 5 minute time span to roll. I'm am extremely tired, since i can't get my eyes off the monitor. There is milk or something down her legs (not white really but kinka shiney ....can't explain) I hope we are close. Can't wait till 3 so the kids can watch and i can take a nap...lol

What a beautiful mare. Being a first timer they can do all sorts of wonderful things. LOL I noticed that her teats themselves are still folded inwards each other, she is full when they stand out and down. But keep a close eye on her anyways. You don't want to miss the action because she read the other book.LOL
But it sounds like she is VERY close.
Shall I start the filly chant? Filly, filly, filly,....

She looks good, those maidens can keep you guessing all the way to the end (birth). Hang in there! Looks like a filly to me, but maidens can be so hard to predict as they are tight as a drum the first time. <<<<<<<<filly>>>>>>>>

ty Jan and everyone..Jan I just want to let you know I appreciate you alot. You have given me alot of information. It is nice to be learning from someone who has been through this so many times. Thank You.

Today she isn't doing to much, but she don't look as big as she did before, I hope this is because of the baby shifting in there. She is out grazing with her new friend. They are so good for each other with Lady being blind. At the place she was at all the horses were mean to her and would not let her eat, she got the left overs. We feed in stalls so that is not a problem here. Here is a picture of the 2 of them.

yea, she is a good girl. I'm starting to get attached to her big time and she just loves to be loved. She is an arabian so she goes alittle crazy. She dances in her stall if she cannot see Angel. They are in seperate parts of the barn but they can still see each other.

Blaze our gelding does not ave that brand, we bought him when he was 9 months old, i'll have to show you a picture of him. He is the funniest horse. We can't put him with the girls, he likes to tease them, so when it's his turn to go out he is lonesome

any ways here he is he will be 2 on Friday, Angels "due date"

That's what they say. But who knows he is not registered but both of his parents are. He looks alot different than yours. That was the main reason I showed missy's picture to my husband, to compare mustangs...lol then he made his comments, that i've already shared with you.

He is very pretty! Missy was actually born in the corral after her mother was captured, which is where I was told she got her freeze brand. If both of Blazes parents are registered, I'm sure he is full Mustang. I have seen all different colors in Mustangs. My friends live in Reno and have seen the wild herds a few times. We have planned to go several times but haven't been able to make it yet.

Today Angel is extremely undcomfortable. She is rolling ALOT and pressing her bum some. She is kicking at her belly, and giving it dirty looks. She still has an appitite. Could she be uncomfortable because when we got our hay last night it looks richer than she has had? I will run out and take some snapshots to get your opinions. Thanks all

cool that sounds fun. I haven't figured out Angels Hieght in hands but when they measured her for 4-h she was a little 54 inches which put her in the pony class had to be 58 to be a horse. I'm having so much fun with the waiting, and learning from this board. Mine has be going crazy too...I keep saying will you quit eating so we can have this baby..lol that's the only sign she hasn't shown yet...wishfull thinking.

I'm posting these pictures of her from today.

I'm the same way with Kit. But she never stops eating. Last year she never stopped eating....she ate her whole grain ration and was eating hay at midnight. Then I found a filly at 3 am....and at 12:00......there was NO sign that she was about to have a baby. All my other mares let em know....but not Kit! Stinker. What kind of mare do you have?

I'm not sure, she isn't registered. My Father-in-law bought her at an auction. All I know is she is from Ok, and she was sold at Shipshawana in Indiana, (A big Amish Community). But registered or not i love her BUNCHES. Well It makes me feel better that all mares don't stop eating..lol Maybe just maybe she's like that.

A quick question. She only ate about half her grain this morning and none of her hay. How long on average after this do they go? Just personal experiences, I know every mare is different, Just curius and IMPATIENT. lol

Last night she showed every sign of being uncomfortable then this morning the food thing, I just so excited. And let me tell you everything she does is a sign to me...for 2 month's now i've been saying this to my hubby, but this time i'm serious!!! (i hope)

Well if you passed up half of her grain......I'd say you are VERY close.
Kits nipples are more filled than last night. SHe's starting to sink in on her hips (on either side of her back bone obove her tail. She is REALLY loose under her tail....but she wants to keep it for a while longer. :-) Oh well!

Oh yea :-). I'm hoping my grulla man comes through with ATLEAST the dunfactor. Any shade of dun and Kit's chrome would be AWESOME. It's sooooo exciting wondering what you're gonna get. We might keep it, if it's a nice filly. I've been raising babies off this stallion for 3 years and haven't gotten to keep one yet :-). Also, I personally have not had a filly off him. Every outside mare that has bred has gotten a filly, but mine have ALL been colts! I'm due a filly aren't I????? hehe. Either way, I'll be ready to BRAG once it comes :-)!!!!
What is your mare bred to?

Lindsey...I am guessing this is not her first based on her really low tummy and because she is so text book looking. She looks ready...low stomach, nipples pointed outward, sunken in the hind end (or is she down in weight?)... anyway, she looks ready - just a matter of when she and baby feel like moving along! Maybe tomorrow...maybe next week...hard to say, but at least she is showing all the normal symptoms she should so nothing to worry about there!

I really hope we get our babies this weekend. Be sure to post photos if you do! Just make sure you get a LITTLE rest this weekend! I am having the vet out in the morning to check some mares. Two that are supposed to be bred for NEXT year and one that was supposed to foal THIS year but then she didn't look big enough. Now she's gettign bigger and making milk, but I'm still not sure if she's bred or not, so wish me luck on that~! I find out at 6:00 in the morning!

Hey stormy! Glad to see you on this one, you little ray of sunshine!
I almost feel GUILTY acting impatient with my mare Kit. Her bag is full and tight and she's been that way for a while now. We are right at 350 days and I'm acting impatient :-). GOldie now...that's a different story. You know a lil about her. Maybe that missy will pop soon....actually I think it just takes extra time to cook all those spots. I bred a half arab mare to a paint once and she went 370 some days. The baby was a gorgeous one, but it tooks it's time! Can't wait!~

Thanks Chasity, I pop in when I can. Not like I can do much else right now but wait anyway, right? {hehe} Mom at home is my main job and I have to keep the kids on some sort of schedule so I'm here at home instead of being with Missy and calling the vet (which I got no answer to this morning either! )I will go out fairly soon though and try and try again until I get the result I want!

Donna~ Any luck??? You know, I was thinking about what we were talking about earlier, with your son going in with Angel and her getting up when she will just lay there with you. It took a while to sink in but here's my take on that. I think the mares can sense that we're mom's or at least the "nurturing" person in their life, so they trust us just a little more. Tell your son that it's nothing personal and that you're not trying to take his horse, you're just doing what mom's do and taking care of the "kid" in need! Here's to keeping up the foal watch with ya!

Stormy-Yes she is standing like that but her legs are out farther and she only stays like that for about 5 seconds or so. I think my kids have learned to accept that I have an animal magnet on me. My daughter says I wear an animal perfume!!lol I sure hope you get a hold of that vet. I want answers!! If I want answers I can't even imagine how you are feeling!!!!!!!

Chasity-I know how you feel about being impatient when stormy is going through what she is, but I'm impatient too. I'm curious what we will get with a paint and a blue roan..any idea's? I will definatly post pictures..probably too many I will try to keep it simple.

Donna - I know what you mean about the animal magnet...I can't even get the mice in the barn to act like they are afraid of me...They just look up when I walk in and go about their business! I had to relocate a 3 1/2 foot garter snake becuase he moved in on the mice and would just sit there and look at me. I threw him in the field next to us twice and he came back...then he went for a little ride in the truck...haven't seen him again!

My nieghbor has a dog that was abused and don't like anyone but her...until now, he comes and stays with me because she works all the time he loves me..

Hey Donna, Just checking in. How's Angel? No news from you know who...he wasn't in again! Grrr Maybe tomorrow! Check out my thread...got lots of new pics and posts of Missy! She looks different tonight...can't explain it too much though. Just lots of change!

I know what you mean about the animal magnet thing too. Horses have always been my favorite and I thought it was too cool when I was younger and almost every horse I encountered would come to me. My mom used to say I had a gift. Other animals would do the same thing. Guess that's why I have a dog, cat, horse and used to have birds at my in-laws where they can roam on the property. I never could turn down a lost stray! Boots, my cat went nearly wild out there but still lets me hold her. She's the one Missy almost stomped to death the other day. The day before that, I was in the pasture just watching Missy quietly and taking notes in my mind when Boots came out like the princess she is and started rubbing on my leg. I pet her and then went back to my "watch" and she jumped up and clawed my pants so I'd pick her up. I was then out in the pasture carrying around a pretty little black and white princess cat and doing horse watch! {hehe} probably looked pretty silly!

Ok, Friday, Angel was going crazy doing everything including dripping milk. Saturday it all stopped, everything except the tail swishing, she even went back to eating everything in sight. Is there a calm before the storm? I thought for sure she was going to have it Friday, I was even concerned that she was rolling to much, and mess up her intestines. She wasn't showing colic signs, she's had that once before and it was different than what she was displaying, Oh well I guess I have a DRAMA QUEEN on my hands. I will post some pictures Later and see if you all can see any difference.

Donna, Crazy crazy isn't it?? I have been writing in on another post, but I have been following you (without you knowing! haha) because our horse is a pony, but very similar to the same color, and she's bred to a paint as well. I am so excited to see what color we get. But, unlike you, I have no idea when she was bred, we just bought her that way. She's showing all the same signs as yours, but instead of actual milk leaking, this is yellowish sticky stuff. I thought wax, but then I heard wax is supposed to be a one time thing. At least the real thing is. So anyway, let's wait together and it'll be a race! (Hey, if you're obsessed, so am I... I've slept outside with her for 2 nights now. hehe)

I'm extremely obsessed. I've been out in the camper for a week. Last night i could've actually slept but well you know how that goes, watch her sleep, watch her stand, it never ends for me. I'm confused about the mild thing. Maybe Angel isn't as far along as i'm hoping because she has never gotten any thick milk, it is sticky but just the consistancy of milk (skim) I don't think I even see any yellow stuff come out either it was clear then cloudy now this. So who knows. I don't think wax is a one time thing though. I've heard others say that it fall off and if it forms back again real quick then you should be real close. Keep me posted, so we can compare.

do you have any pictures?

Hi Sandra! My kit's has been practically "hanging open" in the rear for a WEEK. I mean if I looked long enough I'd probably be able to see him move at the end of the tunnel . Whew, I'll be glad when she pops. SHe's a chesnut bred to a grulla....it's always exciting to see what color you get :-).

Wow Chasity! Textbook as far as the shape and stuff is huh? I keep trying to look for these things in my little mare, but she's a Welsh Pony cross, so she's shaped different than everybody else anyway. Plus this is her first, so everything's all messed up... I finally slept in the house last night-still nothing.

Chasity - that's funny, if anyone could see me every evening staring at my horses rear end, then looking under her, then back at rear, etc....They would probably have me commited..my husband is about ready to. Can't wait to get home and look some more!!

Yea, isn't that funny?!?! Luckily my horses are behind the barn WAY off the road, so nobody can see me either :-), hehe. I lift her tail, kneel down, milk a drop or two out of the udder......I'm sure it would be puzzling to a non-horsey person!
I've been sleeping inside too for the last few nights. An outside mare that bred to my grulla stallion last year on the SAME days as Kit was bred foaled 3 weeks ago! She was two weeks early and Kit is a week late! Why couldn't MINE be early :-).
Anj~ As far as your mare being a maiden, the only change my last maiden mare made was that she DID wax-up HEAVY before foaling. I went out at 8:00 and she had long white drips hanging from her teats. They were pretty dried and looked abotu like the side of a candle that's been burning a while....like a thing hanging down that had different drips dried on it. Then at 9:30 she had it....she wasn't even real swlloen or puffy on her vulva. SHe did not ever look sunken in around her tail or anything. This mare I'm waiting on now didn't last year, but this year she is caving in through that area. They are all their own case. It's so weird.

Well I'm glad to see I'm in the same boat as you guys, but I wish atleast one of us would've had something to share over the weekend. I know what you mean about looking at their butts and boobs, I have to be the biggest pervert out there.lol I did get milk out of Angel last night, It wasn't see through at all but it had almost a tinge of a grayish blue color maybe I can take a picture and see if you guys think it is normal, or not. Good luck to everyone, it looks like it is a race to the finish, hopefully it will be a photo finish!!

Well, I went to get the neighbors kid from school, and came home to a handsome little colt. He has done everything he's pee'd, pooped, and nursed. Mom was excellent had placenta passed when I got home but husband was there for that. She did just perfect!! I'll post pictures later.

I can only assume what these people think when they see me out there...LOL "She is sick" HAHA, well looking to keep some company with the rest that are still waiting....Still counting down my one mares due the 29th and the other sometime in June....

Stormy: My vet was out and I showed him some of your pics, he said your missy definately looks prego but thats just my Dr. opinion...But only tests will confirm.... Anyways peace, love and popped foals, everyone......

I am very fortunate to live on a quiet country road that only one other couple live on a(they are retired farmers and don't go by often). So thus far I have been able to check and take pictures in private. But yesterday my brother came out for a visit and to see the new foal and he was quite grossed out when I started lifting tails to check vulvas. Bachelors.

Jennifer, you have lots of company in the perv dept! Thanks for checking with your vet on my behalf! The nail test says prego and filly. We'll see!

Jenn, Don't feel bad, my younger sister called me "Chester the horse molester!" for doing a vulva check. What a nice thing to be known for! At least I know I'm not alone in this department!

I can relate to the gas thing...I swear she held it all day waiting for that evening rear end check!

Still waiting! AHHHHHHH...going crazy!
Kathee- my husband worked in Mobile Alabama for nearly a year. He just came home in November (we just got married 3 weeks ago). He loved it down there until Katrina hit. Being a Kentucky boy, he'd never been in a hurricane. After that, he couldn't wait to get home :-). He wants to take me there to show me around someday.
Lindsey/Jen----looks like we're still on the dummy list! Gosh I hope something gives soon :-). I think at this point, when I DO find something going on, I won't believe it :-).

Hello everyone.Well still waiting for my horse to have hers. we are at 404 today. Stormy I sent you over some pictures of her to your AOL account becouse i could figer out how to do it on this sight. The baby was moving around yesterday but still unwilling to come out and play. Tried to get someone with a altra sound michine but no one is in this area with a protable one for 3 weeks. If I want to trailor her i could get one but i'm unwilling to do that becouse she doen't like it to much and i think the added stress would not be a good thing right now. Time will tell.

Kathee ,
I live in good ol Crescent City, Florida , where the men are men and the sheep are scared... Anyways its about a hour west of Daytona Beach....Its pretty nice here, no stores though have to drive 40 min for groceries etc. We just recently moved out this way. House prices are insane. We sold our 86000.00 house we built in 2001 for 285,000 on a standard 80x125 lot.. Its nuts... But it worked in my favor...

Still counting down, I'm so tired it ain't funny but I know as soon as I let my guard down she will go.. I know when I go out to check on her and its happening I will problably have a stroke...She knows my schedule to check her to she waits, last night I was about 10 minutes late and she had this look on her face, like " Your Late, Woman...Luckly for you I didnt do anything."...I swear she was human in another life..Her due date is the 29th and the countdown begins, then I still got the other maiden mare to contend with..She hasn't bagged or anything yet.
Oh I just got hired at my Vet's office as a Vet Tech. Thats what I have a degree in . But I have only dealt with small animals, this place deals with Large animals too. Yeah...Maybe I can learn more so Im not such a wreck next time.

Chasity: I hear ya on the dummy list.. Or shall I say we our members of perv patrol. At least were not alone....I feel better knowing I'm not the only one looking at boobies and patting hineys...

Well time to check heres to peace, love and popped foals....

ok, who goes next??? Come on mares, we can't stop this chain again...lets follow Donna and Angel...us ladies on here are tired of being pervs!

You know you've got it bad when you have a dream where your horse is TALKING TO YOU! I had this dream the night before last that I went to check on Missy and the foal was half way out but she was standing. I started to go slowly to her so that I could help the foal not hit the ground so hard, when she finally popped it out. I just sat where I was and Missy picked up the foal with her mouth (gently) like a dog would, and brought it over to me and dropped it. She then said "HERE!" and walked off. I thought that was strange, even in the dream! I yelled for my husband to grab my foal kit quick and he brought the wrong thing. I woke up steaming mad at him! Now if that's not crazy, I don't know what is! These horses can drive us mad for sure! {lol}

Stormy, that is SO funny. It is weird what these darn "foaling pains" that wee experience can do to us. I dreamed that my mare had a paint foal and she's not even bred to a PAINT for crying out loud. SHe is a sabino though (stockings to knees, big blaze, and white spot on her shoulder)....so I guess it's NOT impossible to have some extensive sabino show up :-).
Still nothing here though. With the front we had move through last night.....I was just SURE. But no....nothing. She really is starting walk different and stuff though. SHe's kinda walking with her legs "spread" a little and holding her tail weird. Not really out far, or to the side....but really stiff out at an angle from her body. It's not lifted....an it's stiff as a rod and makes about a 45 degree angle from her body. So we'll see! Hopefully this afternoon will bring some luck!
'm tired of being a perv too :-). My husband thinks it's gross when I touch her vulva to see if it's even looser....but she's looked like it could just walk out for well over a week now :-).

hahaha You ladies crack me up! I've had the dreams too, for like 6 months. That's pathetic! hehe My Maggie is walking all stiff, like she's got arthritis or something. Seems like it takes her FOREVER to get from point A to point B, until I go out to check her again, then she's like "Quit looking at my privates!" and she runs and bucks to the other end of the corral. I was telling my mom some of the cute things I've read on the "Foal" boards here, like training them to stay out of your "personal space" and things. And she said "That's why Maggie's so mad at you! Stay out of her personal space!" hehehe Hey, any of us who've had kids ourselves, know that the last few months is a lot of people looking around where they shouldn't. It just comes with the territory! :-)
Hope someone get's something today! I'm going out to check for milk.

Still no baby here. My god this mare is killing me! I bred an outside paint mare to my stallion and she foaled 3 weeks ago (she was a bit early, but STILL)! Her milk is chaning, tunring whiter was a bit thicker this morning. Her vulve is nearly 3 inches wide at the bottom right now.....I jsut can't imagine why she won't just drop it already! :-)

Hi DOnna. I left out part of the post above. The outside paint mare that foaled three weeks ago was bred the same days as my mare! She is showing WAY more signs than she did last year too. She just FOALED last year. I was out checking on another mare...Kit didn't even look close. Went out to check that morning and KIT had a baby...not the one that looked close.
She is killing me! She is miserable and her bag has been TIGHT for about 3 weeks now. You're right, it CAN'T be much longer.
Sandra, I hear ya. I asked her yesterday if she had decided to keep it :-). Glad to know I'm not alone :-). We will be a year in 5 more days! Boy she's HUGE. I teach and will be out of school thursday for the summer. I'm kinda hoping at this point that she holds out till after that to have it so that I can be home with them all day the day it happens ;). She is bred to our grulla. We are REALLY hoping for a filly to keep off him, but the later it gets, the more I feel like it's probably a colt........there have been late fillies though!

Hey Stormy, unfortunately NO. Kit has not had hers. You must have read the part about the paint mare. There was an outside paint mare that I bred last year on the same days as Kit. That paint mare foaled THREE weeks ago. Still nothing from Kit. My palomino mare turne dout to be bred for NEXT year. She spent three days in with our black stallion (me thinking she was in foal so it wouldn't hurt). I decided after about three days it probably wasn't a good idea, and lo and behold.....she bred and settled during those three days. The vet was like....."uuuuuum......she's not due to foal NOW.....but.....has she been with a stallion?????" So she's 2 months along now in foal to our KC Boston Dee Breeze. We were going to breed her to him anyway this year so we are a little ahead of our game on that one :-). We do have a dun mare that we bought this year in foal. She's due soon too, but not sure exactly when. She's a dun QH bred to a gold champagne Walking horse. I'd have rather had her open so that I could get her bred on MY schedule, but oh well. She'll just be a late one for a few years until I can slowly get her moved up, or until we miss a year and I can start early with her.
SO I'm still on the dummy list...getting up all hours of the night to check for....NOTHING! :-)
Take care!

Ok Chasity, I get it now. I guess you meant last year when KIT foaled (in your above post) when you said you went to check on her and she had a baby beside her? Good luck! Hopefully she goes soon for you. I know how hard waiting can be!

Not yet Kathee. If I can't get ahold of the vet today, I am going to have a very knowledgeable friend of the family come out and look her over in the meantime. She worked for an equine vet for quite a few years. I have also been in contact with a few different people around here locally that raise horses and are familiar with longer gestations. A friend gave me the address to the vet also and if I can't reach him through this phone tag, I am going to go by his house and try to catch him there. I'll keep you posted!

Hey Stormy,

If you want maybe you could give me his number and I could maybe convince him to come see Missy... Something should be done soon. i know you have been trying to get a hold of him, but even if you have someone "very knowledgeable" about horses, that doesn't mean just cause they say she is or is not means anything. just like on this board... If you can do ANYTHING possible to get A vet out there.. it doesn't mean you have to have that vet...try any of them...

Have you got a recent picture of her udder?

Hold the camera under her belly and make sure the flash is on.

Still hoping for a baby for you, but it is looking more and more grim...

I am serious about the phone number and name.. i will call him and get him out there today....LOL. I will be nice too...LOL

Beverly~ Don't worry about it. It's already been taken care of. I should have a report to share tonight. I have already made a call for some help restraining Missy too once he gets there. Just keep your fingers crossed no ER pops up between now and then. Thanks away for your offer!

Yes stormy, you were correct above. I was referring to LAST year on Kit when I said that. She showed NO signs last year...I had her pinned at a coupl eweeks off when she foaled. And I went out and there it was. This year, she's showing everything...and no foal :-). I'm baffled. Can't wait to hear from your vet!
I am just thrilled here. I teach 5th grade and this is our LAST DAY OF SCHOOL! 1/2 day of work tomorrow and I'm off until august! Woohoo! I think Kit is just holding out until tomorrow so that I can be home with her and the baby :-). I actually counted up on the calender instead of relying on my memory. We are at 360 days right now!

I don't know what he's going to do to be honest. I got his wife and she set up the appointment. He is the semi-retired vet but he has been VERY busy lately! I have heard from everyone I've talked to the last couple of days that he is the best we have around here and is worth the wait! We will see! I am kind of scared. I know he'll say she's pregnant but I don't know how Missy is going to act. Any advise???

Hi Stormy,

He will probably palpate her. This is good that you will have cold hard proof in just a couple of hours!!! What time is it there? It is 6:01 here...

i am sure she will be fine... If anything they may have to twitch her.. If he feels like she may endanger him or you I am sure he will sedate her or he will more than likely have some help with him..most vets around here do that...

GOOD LUCK!!!!

Hi Stormy!

Got my fingers and toes crossed in So Cal for you. My male vet always sedates my mare. His arms are so big that it is uncomfortable during palpation. My female vet is very petite and my mare is very quiet so no sedation. Sedation is no problem, just a shot in the vein. If Missy is used to getting her vaccinations she should be fine. My best wishes your way whatever the outcome. Please let us know tonight!

Thanks to you both for your input Beverly and Jan! I'm nervous, not scared, but jittery! It's only 4:30 here. I am waiting for my husband to get home from work. We will leave at five. That will give me time to see how Missy is acting and if we need to give her a little exercise before the vet gets there to calm her of that Mustang spunk {hehe} I don't know if this is good or bad but I asked my mother-in-law to feed a half a flake of grassy alfalfa around 4:00 so that Missy is not too hungry yet she will hopefully have time to clear out first and not get too hiped up. I'm not sure why I'm so worried. I am positive that she's pregnant...guess I'm more scared of how she'll act.

don't worry. I am sure she will be fine!! GOOD LUCK and if you are disappointed, DON"T BE. there is still time to get her to a stallion for a fall breeding...

Either way, please let us all know as we are just as nervous as you are....

Stormy,
I talked to some one about your horse, they said to got to the store and get some pregnacy test (like three difrent ones) get some horse pee in a cup and test it. I dont know if it works but its worth a try and it costs less than the vet. Try to get ones that test for different hormones. one is bound to work.

Don't bother with the human tests unless you are interested in the pregnancy status of a human!

This has been discussed several times before in this board, so rather than repeating it all here, for those interested in greater detail check the threads at http://www.equine-reproduction.com/board/messages/9/5492.html and http://www.equine-reproduction.com/board/messages/1914/5272.html

HI all. I am happy to report that I FINALLY got a beautiful baby boy this morning at 1:30 am. :-) SHe never did drip milk at all or anything, but the milk did seem more white...STILL not opaque, but enough change that I decided i'd stay up. I didn't get what I was wishing for ( a filly to keep), but I couldn't be happier. He is a MOOOOOSE (maybe that's why it took so long....how long is a moose gestation????) haha
Kit gave us a dark bay stud colt with 4 whites and a blaze. He is already very sweet and he has earned the name "Twister". To me, his blaze rolls off the side of his nose, like a twister, AND...when he was trying to get up, he just kept spinning in circles, which he still does a lot now that he's up and moving. Maybe he will be a reiner :-). Anyway, I am going to name him Double Twisted Dee (He is Double Sonny Dee Bar bred). I just think he is a classy looking boy! Definately worth the wait :-). I'll be keeping up with you other ladies....but for my AQHA foals...I'm finished til next year! (Sort of bummed about that). I have 1 foal left but it's going back to the person I bought the mare in foal from. He bred her to a walking horse so that baby won't be of much use to my program. Should be neat colored though. Dun mare, champagne stud. I'll post when it arrives as well :-).
Here's my boy!

Isn't he darlin'??????? :-)

hi stormy ...i everyone..We had a foal the other night..unforutanly the outcome was not good...poor little thing was deformed..split hooves no joints above the hooves and it was neither a boy or a girl. But it was a strong little booger was trying to stand before the back of him was out just a shame that there wasn't nething neone could do for it. The worst part if there could nething worse than that is the mare wasn't mine it was a friend of ours and we were horse sittin for them. This was my first time with a mare in foal I was prepared for everything except that. My husband's mare was palpated as pregnant on may 12 as being 45 days now we are way nervous about the whole thing after what happened..so as long as everything goes good and she keeps the pregnantcy u will just have to put up with my stupid questions since i am new at this whole thing..srry this is so long and i am glad i found this site its done wonders so far

Kathee~ Thanks! I'm the typical proud mom!
Sandra~ Kit was definately pretty much a suprise. Actually my dog is the main reason I caught it. MY gramma has a little OLD mobile home back by the barn. It's a doll inside...it's her summer get-a-way :-). ANyway, the mare's lot is RIGHT beside the back bedroom. I had all windows open as to let in noise (SO I could hear straining.) I went to bed about 10:00...she didn't appear any different than she had other than that her milk was a bit more white and pretty THICK. It had been getting thick for 3 or 4 days, but not so white until last night. It still wasn't real white. I set my alarm for 1:00....I got up went out...everything was fine...normal. SO I was going to sleep for another hour. I had my english bulldog puppy with me and she was scared because we weren't at home in OUR house. SHe woke me up freaking out at 1:30. I started to scold her then I heard Kit grunt and I Was like GOOD GIRL! I looked out and sure enough, there were feet out! I had just fully checked her 30 minutes before. SHe was eating hay like there was no tomorrow~ THen 30 minutes later she has feet hanging out.....
Can't wait to see your pics!!!

Chasity- I am so happy for you. She sounds like Angel. I had no warning at all left for a half hour toget the neighbors kid game home, there were some friends of my husband there, they called my husband from work, and I came home to the little guy. Silly mares. He is so very handsome.

Heather- So sorry to hear what you went through, I hope the mare is doing good. Keep in mind while you are waiting on your mare next year that problems like that do no happen often, Keep you chin up and enjoy this time bonding with your mare!

Sandra- I can't wait to read news from you. I am having so much fun with my little guy. But being new to this whole thing I was surprised at some of the things this little guy does!!

Heather, I don't know how I missed your message but I just now read it. I am so very sorry! Whatever you do, don't blame yourself! I'm sure your friend understands that it was in no way your fault and there was nothing you could do to change what the foal was. I do wish you so much luck with your own mare! Remember, although problems and foal loss do occur, they are the exception, not the rule.

I do realize it was nothing i did nor nething the owner did to cause it. The full reason i had her at my house is in the last month of her pregnancy she had lost so much wieght she looked like nothing but skin and bones with a big belly. She was on a very nice pasture and grain. I can't even being to think why she went down so fast and that bad. I was a afraid she wasn't even gonna make it thru the birth she was so weak she barely walked and she barely ate. After she did have it it took her an hour to get up she just laid there with no movement but her slow breathing. I would not have been shocked if she had just stopped breathing. We were able to take the foal away before she even got up to start to bond with it which i think helped some. She really didn't greive she nickered a few times and knew something was missing but not like i had been reading they can be like. I look forward to baby we may have next year but i am the type of person who tries not to get my hopes since i know nething could happen between now and then.....
But heck my mare is pregnant its kinda hard not to get excited about it...by the way she is registered qaurter that we bred to a percheron yeah i know it sounds weird but it was the decision we made and since her days of being ridden will end sooner than it should we wanted a baby from her so by the time she goes to pasture the baby will be ready to be ridden

Hi I have a maiden mare that is 310 days. She has been bagged up for 4-5weeks.Now she is getting a really tight bag,You barely touch them and a yellow pee looking stuff streems out.She doesnt look as big side ways but her belly is pointy at the bottom and her tail is sunk and jiggly and she has a little bit of bloody crust on her reerend,She has always been the really lovey tipe but now she will crawl up in your lap if youd let her.Paseing and pawing kicking her belly alot. How much time would you say.She also holds her tail up all the time.

Jennifer it sounds like she's close but 310 days don't seem like she should be showing all those signs, but i'm no expert, I've only had 1 foal, and she fooled me..lol

Jennifer, I agree with Donna but then again, I'm no expert either. I have a maiden who is supposed to be at 419 days and NOT showing those signs of udder development! I'm at a loss here! I do wish you luck though and hope your mare holds out till it's time!

Jennifer, I don't know if this is warranted so maybe the more seasoned breeders can chime in but I'm a bit concerned about your mare. I am thinking that's too soon. Then again, she is a maiden so maybe she's just having false labor pains right now to prepare her for later? Either way, I do wish you all the best!

Sandra, I'll be waiting!!!!

Stormy,I hope so. My parents have the stud.I sent photos of her udder and of her to them and mom thinks she has at least a few more weeks.I hope.My vet said,If it is born after 311days it will be small but ok.I have my mares seperated now.I think the older one would try and take it.She is also due.I hate this part of waiting and worrying.I wish it was done and I had two little ones to watch play.I usually have my parents come over all the time and look at my other mare but now they live 30 min away. With the price of gas they cant come look at the mares.Well keep you fingers crossed that sadie makes it a few more weeks.
