Hi!
I've been debating on when/whether too or not to put my 2.5 week foal and mare into the pasture with my 4 yr old arab(who is lowest in the herd) and then eventually the gelding(alpha). I want to put them in with my arab first but I don't know when. Aspen charges my arab through the fence when Riley gets next to my arab and I dont want Aspen(the mom) hurting my arab or her baby or anything going wrong. So i was wondering when you all usually put baby and mom in with another horse and how you do it, They've seen eachother through the panels for his whole life. I wouldn't leave them in at night, just for a hour or two during the day.
thanks!

Elena-
I am with you on this one! my foal is the same age.
I have put the yearling in with the mare and foal and they are ok till the yearling decides to run and play, then "mom" gets angry and chases her, she runs away to get to the pasture where everyone else is and gets cornered, today she though about jumping the fence when "mom" tried kicking at her in hte corner, so that lasted about 10 minutes. I have also put the mares 11 year old daughter in there, she just walks away and knows her mothers body language, so she minds her own business goes off to her own area, no problems there, but the real problems I think will be the gelding, and the broodmare that is open this year. both of them are very fond of babies and i am afraid of big problems, especially since mom is middle of the herd, those two are dominant...
I need suggestions too! they are in side by side pastures and can sniff over the fence and she lets jericho sniff through the fence. They stand and nap side by side (through the fence), but i am afraid of problems with baby stealing and jericho being caught in crossfire!
how long do you usually wait and do you just put them all together and let them establish order or one at a time or what?
HELP!!!!

My mares all live out together. Open mares are separated from bred mares until after they foal. About a week later mom and baby are moved to the open mare pasture so we can tease to watch for foal heat. I've found that foal stealing only happens when the colts are just born, not after they've had a week to find out who mommy is.
