Hi there...I am worried about my mare who is 17 days overdue. She has an odd "bubble" on her udder.http://www.themanestreet.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=40356&hl= Please look at the link for pictures as it is hard to explain. Has anyone seen this before?? Should I be freaking out?

talk to a vet, that is super strange!
It almost looks like a hernia; does she get grumpy when you touch it?

She was fine to let me touch it all over. From the back it just looks like another udder.

somebody else posted a very similiar bubble on her e afew weeks ago, they had their vet look and determined a form of edema, it went away a day or two later and the mare foaled a few days after that...so...hopefully the same type of thing, bu i guess i would contact your vet about it! at least talk to the vet.
good luck!

Kris that would have been me. Classy did that to me, actually ended up with matching ones on either side of her udder. They would be larger in the morning and then after she had been out to pasture for the day they would go down. The vet told me to keep and eye on them to make sure they did not rupture, they never did and as soon as she foaled they went away completely. If you are really concerned have your vet some out and check it.

PHEW! I am so glad that someone else had it happen!
She has an edema on her girthline as well so I am going to assume that it is the same. I am going to put her in a paddock where she has to walk up the hill for water and really get some exercise.
It would make sense since she is overdue.
We talked to the vets office and they said they had never seen it before.

Thank you sooooo much!!!

Brittanya, NP I actually e-mailed the pics to my vet since he is about an hour from us. He had never seen it either but asked me a bunch of questions about it, was it hot to touch, hard, did she seem uncomfortable etc? I told him nope only thing that made her uncomfortable was if she was not feeding her face. Check it in the morning and then in the evening after she has had some exercise.

Our vet is an hour away as well, so that's why I wasn't rushing him out here. When we tried to explain it over the phone they hadn't heard of it before and said just to keep an eye on it since it wasn't making her uncomfortable.
She is finally showing a little bit of milk so hopefully she will just foal this week and we can be rid of it!
Thanks again!

My mare had a bubble almost the same as that but my mares was at the back of her bag. It made her look like she had a cow udder. I had the vet out to her and she said the same thing your vet did. She got me to excercise her lightly but it didn't seem to help much. It just went away once she foaled. It did come back when we weaned her foal but only for the first couple of days and then it just dissapeared again ... it would be interesting to know what it is.
