WHAT DO I DO? *SPLINT/CAST? (VET RECCOMMENDS HOSPITAL STAY TO DO THIS FOR PRESSURE SORES ETC) *TOPICAL ANTI INFLAMATORY FOR 10 DAYS("SURPASS") *NOTHING-JUST WAIT AWHILE *SURGERY HELP!!!!!! VET ACTUALLY RECCOMENDS STARTING WITH THE SURPASS CREAM, ANYONE HAVE ANY LUCK WITH THAT ROUTE? |

Kris- I think I'm way behind on things! My 2 year old son has been really sick (they had to IV him) and I had surgery. Sorry to hear about the lil guys legs, I'm actually dealing with the same thing right now. My colt is a little bucked at the knees too, they're not real bad so at this point I'm just waiting and hoping. His pasterns and fetlocks are fine so I don't really have any good advice for you, but please keep me informed on what you decide to do! Good luck and keep your chin up. |

thanks guys! I think i am going to use hte anti inflamatory cream on them, but i need to shave his backs of his legs so the cream absorbs into them, anyway, if that works its well worth the ugly shaved legs, however i do not want to shave them when it is nasty out! 45 degrees (F) and raining non stop...BRRR! oh and i had A vet out (not my regular) because Tsaharah has mastitis! boy i tell you she did not read the book on foaling, but she sure read the book on problems to have after foaling...thankfully they have all been fairly mild ones...but i tell you itis adding up FAST! and I have officially dicided I am not breeding this year!!! I need a minimum of 1 year off! I am getting too old for the stress!!!! either that or I care too much and cant handle the stress! well heres what his legs look like as of Thursday. cconner-boy sorry to hear about the difficultys you have been having! I hope things get better for you! Stormy- no foal YET?!?!?!?!? well whats she been up to lately? is she bagging up more? belly dropped and pointy? (that was 2 days before foaling.) are you sure the dates are correct? when was she supposedly bred? |

I'm still here Kris, just no news. Boy, I thought T drug you through the mud! We're at day 380! I am sure of the breed dates, never happened before or since and I know she's pregnant but as far as when the baby will be here?????????Who knows! Breed date April 14, 2005, stud left overnight. I was not there, did not know about the breeding and was quite po'd when I found out but I am sure of the dates anyway. She has showed so many signs then STOPS! I am beyond annoyed! Here are a few signs and what she looks like....udder is filling more daily(remember, she's a maiden)belly has dropped more although she does not have that "point" like T. I can see (not sure how to give a visual on this) that the baby is sitting lower in the abdomen. There are points when I can see her ribs then a big bulge and then a rippled in spot towards the hips (not sure if this makes any sense at all but I will try to send pics too)Milk veins are VERY present! Gee, ummm, yesterday she was walking and grazing then stopped dead in her tracks, raised her rear leg and kicked up at her stomach. Then she would alternate hind legs to "rest" then raise one leg then the other to trying to scrape her stomach. She would look at her sides, bite at them, blow out as if annoyed, arch her neck and pin her ears back and so on. This went on in the same spot for like 15 mintues. I just left her her own space and watched from a distance, jotting down things in my journal. She did not seem bothered by my presence at all, went on about her business. Then she stopped this and went to her feed. I have really noticed the baby sticking out in weird shapes the past two days. I finally told her tonight that she shouldn't worry because she will never have that baby! hoping that reverse psychology will do the trick! Anita K. told me once I give up, she'll have it! So maybe tomorrow I will find a foal???!!! Please God!!!!!Will keep you updated! Jericho is just too darn cute, messed up little legs and all, but I do hope you can get it fixed! Good luck! Poor T. I bet she's really driving you crazy now! |

Kris, I just had pictures on here for you and my AOL account shut itself down! So here I go again...these pics are from yesterday. They're not too great but may offer you some idea... this belly shot was awesome in person but doesn't do any justice in the picture. Her belly was sunken around the rib here, then stuck out and sank back in near the hollow hip area (above pic) this one's from 4/23, for comparison |

Rejuvenaide by Progressive Nutrition http://www.prognutrition.com/RejuvenaidePowder.htm My colt out of a PMU mare was born with slightly contracted tendons on the front and the Rejuvenaide fixed him right up. It has a lot to do with minerals (mainly a lack of copper). |

Kris, I suggest you talk to a nutritionist at Buckeye. Has your vet suggested oxytetracycline treatment? That is the usual treatment for contracted tendons (if the foal doesn't improve on its own after a few days). |

While oxytetracycline may be beneficial, it is not the first choice these days, as renal damage has been recognised as one of the unfortunate side-effects. It is typically well down on the list of choices. Just waiting is one option, another may be to wrap the legs. Some require restriction of exercise, some benefit from it. There's no hard and fast rule, as each case may differ, and individual evaluation is recommended. |

Kris- still no improvement in the legs? I hope that you can find some way to help him. One of ours had a slight problem last night. Well meaning students went to turn Sassy and Pedro down in the arena, but Pedro (who does not stay with his mother) went ahead of her and ran under a partition and out onto the ledge above the arena. Rather than backtrack when they realized what happened, the folks leading Sassy went on into the arena with her.. so Pedro, being young and foolish JUMPED the 5 foot ledge into the arena to rejoin mother. His knees looked really big last night..I can only hope there is no permanent damage to them. Luckily, the landing would have been very soft, however, I'd still think that even his own body weight coming down from that height cannot have been good for his joints. Sandy foaled on Friday night, that was the scariest one we've had this year, foal was not turned right, head was turned to the side and Sandy wasn't working too hard to make things change. It took forever to get the muzzle out enough to clear the sack away from her face (yes, HER, it's a filly!) and her tongue was purple! it took two of us pulling and trying to turn the head so that the shoulders could come, once we accomplished that, the rest was easy. The foal was not very reactive at first but with a little stimulation, she decided to join us and breathe! We've yet to give her a name, "Chloe" had been suggested, I'm rather partial to "Scarlett" but the jury is out on that one. Frosty is now 350 days and miserable and we still are waiting on Ruby and Brandy (who is going to be an adverture in herself I'm afraid). Brandy has been bucking, squealing & rearing when the foal kicks her. Somehow, I'm thinking REAL labor is not going to be pleasant for that filly! Good Monday morning to you all! Ev |

Lori- she's red..lol, that's a given for all the ones we have left to foal. But at least she's a nice RED one and a girl! Charles is hanging in there, the Doc called him this a.m. and told him to sit tight one more day before he started walking around again.. we'll know tomorrow most likely if he's going to need surgery on Thursday. I posted on another thread about my yearling, I had one get hung last night. We'd been leaving halters on so it was easier to catch them, the pen is on a hillside and it's rained so much that it was slick and she caught her halter on the fence and could not get her footing apparently. Sucks big time.. I feel very badly, it was not at all necessary that she die.. it was totally our/my fault for not taking time to take the halters off when they were turned out. |

Ev, WOW...what a weekend. They say we will not be given more than we can handle. Congrats on your filly and I am so happy that you were there with the expertise to bring her into the world. She will be a special one! My deepest sympathy on the filly that lost her life. Thanks for posting it for us all. It is a good reminder because it could be any one of us in the same situation. With all you are dealing with I would have done the same thing to try and manage daily duties the most effiently. Charles is in my prayers for complete healing. Jan & Lori, thanks, it does seem like I'm under a bit of a dark cloud these days. Hopefully, this is the last of it, we'll find out on Wednesday if Charles has to go back for more surgery. Keep your fingers, arms, and toes crossed for us! We still have 3 mares to foal, two of which concern me a little bit, hopefully, there's no cause to worry and they'll spit their foals out soon without any trouble. |

Lori- it sounds like it, Sage will be my first due next year, if she follows the pattern from this year, the foal should be born about the 25th of February! ( cold, cold..what WAS I thinking ?? ) I take two mares for sonograms today to see if they are bred. One of them is the black (or whatever color you want to call her ) named Avery who lost her colt this year. She's looking MUCH better and healthier and happier, I'm betting she's bred too. |

Lori- Me too! it was so good to see her run and run and buck around the arena when I turned her out the other day, she's SO shiny and healthy looking now..much better than she was a week or so ago. ( I felt very guilty for breeding her back on her foal heat, but with Listolena being sold, it was either that, or loose my stud fee ) Since they didn't sell him after all, I'll have another chance at getting her bred if she didn't stick on her foal cycle.. hopefully, we'll know this afternoon! |

Lori, Kris & Stormy- just a quick update on things before I head out for home... Pedro the jumper colt is doing ok, knees are still a little swollen, but I think he'll be ok. Frosty FINALLY had a colt at 3 a.m. this morning, no big problems, she's a great mom and NO surprises, it's a sorrel colt LOL. Charles will go back into surgery tomorrow morning, it should me much less invasive than our first procedure and he may actually get to come home on Friday..not holding my breath on that one, but we'll see. Also, his face seems to be improving so that's a GOOD sign. Avery is not pregnant, the vet said her ueterus was still somewhat large so I may skip this cycle and try next month for her. Hoping that we have NO babies born tonight as I NEED some rest.. I'll pop back in here on Friday if all goes well and if not, it'll be the weekend before I post again. Take care and thanks so much to you all for the support lately! Ev. |

well getting to the vets to get the cream has been a no go! itis over an hour away and i work til 5:30, so ia m hoping maybe the local vet can get me some. he looks to maybe be straightening a bit, but still after being up and running he is a bit weak on them yet and will stand bucked, so i am HOPING by this weekend to get it! of if the local vet will get me some ill have it tonight! he sure is a riot!!!! friendliet thing ever! its pretty funny, mom still dont want to be caught, but as soon as jericho sees you come in hte fence he comes to you...so mom follows...HAHAHA CAUGHT!!! oh the cutes thing, I have barrels up in the pasture he is in, and it is by the road, well hte other morning he was running around and was cirlcling the barrell, the kids' school bus driver saw this and said to my daughter (13) "I see MY baby is already doing barrels?" my daughter said, "yeah but I DONT THINK SO, mom AINT selling that one!" yeah he and my yearling are the talk of hte area, wanted by many!!! I have actually been told that as a 8 month old that someone would have given me $6000.00 for her (buttermilk-almost white-buckskin dun roan with ALL the dun markings!) mostly just because of her color, and a little on her bloodlines. I said no, "she ll be worth more as a 2 year old!" [I really have no intentions of selling her...not at this point anyway!] well missy is shaping up nicely stormy!!!! she does look pregnant now!!! Tsaharah went about 3 days from the major belly drop... but she dropped before that too about a month before foaling...im going with the 3 day thing with missy!!!! (YOU CANT GO ANOTHER MONTH!!!!!!) good luck...check her often now!!!!!! |

Kris - I am glad little Jericho is doing well...it must be so cute watching him run around the barrels! My mom was here visitng and she was so shocked to learn that foals really do play in the pasture...we had the greatest time just watching Catcher play with her ball, throw sticks in the air and get a sudden inpsiration to sprint across the pasture with a buck or two |

isnt it funny, it takes 11+months to make a foal, and they are up and mocinvg instantly, it only takes 9 months to make a human and takes equally as long before they are usually up and moving(walking anyway)...thats just wierd!!! but truely AMAZING! yes Jericho is a hoot! yesterday he was playing chase and hide and go seek with my daughter...then we decided it was probably not a good idea to teach him/condone to chase people since he is already a stinker at times, so she stopped, but it was great while it was going on! I am unsure onhi slegs yet, they are straighter in hte morning, buthte more he runs the more they bend as he gets tired...i hope he will be fine! |

I was watching my 16 year old play chase with Catcher today. When she came inside I said...that was fun wasn't it now, how would you like to play chase with Magnum (our 16.5 hand, 1350 lb QH)...she said that wouldn't be fun and I explained that you can't just tell them to stop when they get big! She got the picture. I agree though, it was fun watching them! |

Hey Kris. I just looked at pics of your colt. Is he a grulla? Looks like it! I have a BIG sorrel mare that is in foal to my grulla stallion and I'm crossing my fingers for a grulla off the cross. I've seen it happen many times, just hope i get lucky . We are at 342 days right now. Still back and forth on a full bag and then a loose bag . Probably still a little ways to go! I can't WAIT!!!!! |

Chasity- We believe he will be a buckskin as he does not have the dorsal and leg bars required to be a grulla. however a faint line is appearing in his back...so well see if he sheds out, but i think it is probably countershading. (his dad however IS a dun!) hang in there, 342, youre getting closer...and any day...watch that bag...it was hte best predicter for me, until the actual day when her actions told me shed foal THAT night! |

Oh forgot to say, this is actually the one we thought was a grulla, because of her dark face, but according to dna she is a buckskin dun roan(buttermilk), but roans do not normally roan on hte face...so we are not totally sure what she is, she is registered as a "dun who carries and expresses the roan gene with AQHA." she has hte same sire as "Jericho" my new colt. Her name is "Precious Parr Dun", she is a yearling. |

Kris~ It's always fun to watch them shed out. I had a colt last year off my grulla stud and paly mare. It took me a while to decide, but after about a week, I'd decided buttermilk dun. His stripe was not dark enough to be grulla, it was a "tan" color rather than black. He did indeed shed out a beautiful creamy color with black points and black leg barring, and very visible, dark tan dorsal stripe. He was so pretty and I made the mistake of pricing him. I swore I'd keep her foal this year (I've been wanting to keep one for 3 years and always price them . But she is the one I have here that I don't think is going to foal for me . Can't wait to see more pics of your boy later on! I'm guessing your dun stallion carries a cream gene as well? This mare I'm waiting for fooled me last year . I can nearly always tell when they are going to foal "that night". But not her. I would have pinned her at two weeks off last year and I went out to check on another mare...only to find this one with a filly . She didn't show ANY of the physical changes they usually show. I would never have guessed she'd foal that night! |

Jan O- Thank you for the compliment, yeah she sure is unique, I have never seen anything like her! she is a real doll too. she is a big girl, 14 hands by first birthday! Chasity, sounds like you will be keeping a watchful eye then huh? yeah these guys are price too, but high, LOL!!! I fugure if someone will gie me high dollar how could i refuse? did you see that my colt is 1/2 arab and 1/2 quarterhorse? his sister (the yearling) is full QH. I do not own the stallion, i bred out, but yeah he MUST carry the cream gene, he throws a ton of buckskins and lighter duns, but in 4 years this is his only buttermilk born, and as light as Jericho is i almost wonderif he wont be buttermilk too! |

Kris, He sure looks like the buttermilk dun I had born, atleast in body color. I bet he will be nice and light for ya! I have NOT seen your other horses. Do you have a website. The pic of my buttermilk dun colt once he shed off is on my foals page in the 2005 section. The grulla colt I had on groundhog's day is there too, in the 2006 section. He has already sold too. Check them out when you have time and direct me to some pics of the other horses YOU mentioned. You'll also have to check out my dunalino filly on the mares page, Peppy Lil Kenzie. I'm really proud of her . www.dbarquarterhorses.com |

I see you have a san parr bar bred horse, well here is the stallion i bred to for these two His name is Rain bird rancho, a 15.3 hand dun who carries a cream gene. his sires side follows out of wiley zan parr out of zan par sun out of zan parr bar, also carrying wild wasp and anita king 86. and his dams side goes back to george, hancock adn badger lines the mare precious came from is Misty Haz A Glow, she is 15 hands, out of Haz ben tuff(ima two eyed tuff X hazard county) Ms impressive charm out of (impressive vince X wytro northerette) win or lose leo and tiny watch star also on her papers. she is a bay roan AQHA. who is in the process of being sold and shipped to canada! Jericho's(colt) mom is Tsaharah out of Sanbara Tsali (tsulybtarion), a medallion stallion arabian with gamaar from her dams side. she is a 15 hand well built girl! ( Ive had her since she was just shy of 1, she is now 17) here is her and Jericho. I have another arab mare named Tsalibrate mi love and a grade qh named sunny who is also being sold(to a good friend that will let me still borrow him to team pen ) I have no bred mares this year, i will spend my time doing ground work with the yearling and weanling(when he is one) and just riding. and of course always keeping my eyes open or that perfect mare or gelding to buy...(hahaha isnt everyone always in the market?) I figure i got what i bred for and wanted my whole life two years in a row...better quit while im ahead!!!(a dun (either sex), and a 1/2 arab 1/2 qh buckskin colt!) nice website, and wow, nice stout horses....eventually i will breed for that, i just located 2 stallions i need to find mares for, both are 50% two eyed jack (dj jacks son (black bay but is suspect black with cream since he is out of a palomino and throws the cream dilution often)and watch gold bert (golden palomino)are their names. 100% foundation bred. see them at www.deer-creek-ranch.bigstep.com they are not mine, just located near me. well nice to se your horse and what beautys they are...good luck on hte one in the waiting!!! |

Hey Kris. No worries. My fingers get ahead of my brain a LOT . I always think people who read my typing must think i'm a real dummy! I will have to wait until I am at home to look at these pictures. I teach 5th grade and they have photo bucket proxied.....can't open the page. My big red mare really is getting close. Doing the same as last year. Her udder was the only thing that looked HALF way ready last year. Her belly never changed, he rear never changed, her tail head....NOTHING. Her bag is FULL though, so hopefully soon. I don't know f you'd read or not, but I have a mare that I am not sure if she is bred or not. Big ol running bred QH palomino mare. Had her checked all the way up to 4 months and fine. But didn't get as big as before through winter and early spring. So I gave up on her. But she's been going through some changes in the past week that have my hopes back up. I went out to check on her (was the first time in abotu 2 weeks I"d examines her b/c I thought she was open). Her udder was beginning to fill and with not effort at all, I can get a full stream of liquid. It's about half way between clear and white. From a distance look white, but upclose, you can see through it. The vet is coming saturday, can't make it til then, but says he thinks she's probably still in foal. She's had a stud colt every year for the past 8 years and gets HUGE. Maybe she's just having a filly this time . ANyway, can't wait til next saturday so I'll know. It would be a good suprise to find that out a the end. She was bred the same day as the other one, so we should know soon anyway! She's the one who had the buttermilk dun last year that I didn't mean to sell . You'll have fune with those QH if ya decide to get them. I love every one of mine! I'll check out your pics when I get to my computer at my mom's. I just moved in Feb and still don't have a land-line for internet hook-up. No DSL in my neck of the woods either . Later! |
