I would love some feed back from you knowledgeable ones: My mare's foal died during foaling on 4/17/06, I have a live foal guarantee and I am going to breed her back. Last year the stallion was local and she was live covered. This year he is in Florida on a show circuit. The vet was out today 4/25/06 to ultrasound to check out her uterus, cycle and to culture her and to to a cystology (sp?) The vet is recommendeding that we short cycle her about 5 days after she ovulates this heat to better control the ordering of the semen. She says that he uterus has returned to normal and that the mare looks really good. I have been excercising her with ponying about an hour everyday and her milk is drying up. So my question is does the short cycle help in securing the semen in the most timely fashion? and did we leave any thing else out that would up the odds of her getting pregnant.

Jan, of course I can't help you with this answer but I wanted to say that I am very sorry for the loss of the last foal! Your comments have helped me through my difficult time with my mare. I hope you find all the answers you're seeking and I wish you all the best of luck the next time around!

Thanks Stormy, Were you able to get out to check on your mare today? Any change? Waiting is a killer but hang in there. Mine is the exception not the rule. 3 years ago this mare gave me a beautiful boy! I must be crazy to go through this again!!

I didn't make it out to see her today but my mother-in-law says she's doing fine. I am going tomorrow for sure. Keep me posted on yours!

Prostaglandin to short-cycle the mare may aid with the timing, or it may not. Look at the article about "why prostaglandin sometimes doesn't work" for more information. If you want accurate pinpointing of ovulation use P&E.

Thank you Jos for the article referrals, I've printed them, read them, and will discuss them with my vet today. The progesterone & estradiol protocol looks very promising! I knew those that "DO" would have great ideas.
