I am so hoping that I will have a baby today. I tested my mare last night with the foal predictor test and it showed 2 squares and when I milked her it was still a clear yellow. As of this morning it has turned to white and we got 5 squares!!!!! She was very testy yesterday but seems back to her old self today. I am so excited and nervous too. This is my second foal, but the first one from a different mare did not get out of the sac. My husband is on Mare stare watching from the camera while I am finishing a few things at work. I am scared.

Don't be scared. Keep in mind that the vast majority of births go completely fine. Just keep an eye on her, do your best to be at the birth, and leave the rest up to your mare. I am betting she knows exactly what to do. :-)

Renee- U know what youre feeling...i was so anxiously awaiting the birth of my foal, wxcited wishing it to come TODAY..then when she actually got real close, evertime she would show sighns or act wierd i got butterflies and almost passed out from hyperventilating!!!!
the night she actually foaled i knew she was going to, i was fairly calm...just anxiously waiting...i knew it woud be THAT night...just did not know when...when the time came...i ws calm...till she started thrashing, then i called the vet and once i had him on the phone to walk me through the things she was doing i was better...(she had 2 uneventful deliveries prior to this one, but this one was a breeding to a much larger horse than her)
so you will be ok. just have your vets number handy, and have a person for support with you if possible! and be diligent!!! good luck!

The birth was interesting for me since it was my first one. I had read a million things out of books and the internet. We had been watching her on camera from the house and she got very restless as soon as the sun went down. By 10pm she had laid down several times. Right at 12am she laid down then got back up and turned around and I could see a white bulge. I told my husband we had to get down there and he thought I was just seeing things. We got down there and I noticed that the bottom of the hoof was pointing up and I got scared. But being the seasoned broodmare, she got back up and walked for a minute the foot went back inside and then she laid back down and pushed and this time it was correct. Just by seeing all of the information about the mare lying down I assumed she would be completely on her side, She never did that, she was basically laying down almost upright. She pushed for several contractions and then the head was almost out. At that point I broke the sac and rubbed his nose a little. She was having trouble getting his shoulders thru her hips, so I just kept traction and helped a little. After delivery he was taking a long time to stand, after an hour, I went ahead and milked just a little to give him he had been trying to suck on my pants or anything that got close to him. Finally at 1:45 hours he got up and we had to teach him how to squat and nurse because he is so tall. He has now figured out how to bend that neck to get there. He and mom are both doing great. She is a wonderful momma. He is very active and seems to really like people. I did the imprinting and gave him the bottle so I can just walk into the stall and he comes immediately to me. Others it takes him a few minutes. We are really pleased. We were hoping since the Dad was grey that he would be too, but most have told us that he looks like he will stay sorrel.

Now I need help on naming him.

Congratulations Renee! Looks like he will grey out. Very grey on the muzzle area and by his eyes. Very good indication of greying out.
Good luck with him!
