How long is too long for a foal to still have the umbilical stump??? My foal turned 1 month on Friday and still has the stump. The vet was out last week and said not to worry that its dry and healthy. I only used the iodine the first 10 days and he says its not necessary now.... Can someone PLEASE educate me!!! I trust my vet but I just can't help but be concerned.

HELP - Sorry to be a pain about this but I can't find any information about how long is too long to have the umbilical..... There isn't a hernia - just the stump. Could someone please "enlighten" me. I would greatly appreciate it.

Peggie, I don't know the answer to the question you are asking as my mare is only pregnant, BUT if you go on one of the sites on here like "Attn. Jos" or "feeding with foal at side" where the other girls or Jos check in fairly often, you may get the answer you seek faster! Sorry I can't help more!

Peggie, I have asked for someone to help you from the other site on here. Hope it helps! Everyone on here is really cool and helpful when they can get to your questions. Good luck to you!

Peggie if there is nothing else wrong with him, I wouldn't get too worried, and if it really bothers you, you could probably band it. I honestly don't remeber how long my colts had their's last year.

Peggie My colt is 8 weeks and still has a tiny stump left so do not worry about it. Some disapear sooner than others. As long as there is no infection to it or it does not look normal than it will go away as he grows. Hope this helps.

my filly last year had hers for about a month, it was slightly infected and bled a tiny bit so it stayed moist and hung on, when i had it looked at and was told to put betadine on it it dried up adn fell off shortly after. My 10 day old foal still has his, but it is dry.
