My mare foaled March 12,2006. She has been looking very well. The last couple of weeks she has been looking thinner. I have been feeding grain 2xday and she has pasture and a big grass hay bale. I also give her mare care plus. I was wondering if it was safe to give her some weight booster. It has been working well for a gelding we have but I did not know if it was safe to give her since she is nursing a filly. Any advice is greatly appriciated. Thankyou. Steph |

If she has a lot of pasture, I'd think that would be plenty of grain. ( I'm not sure the ratio of gallons to pounds but mine gets 8lbs in the morning and the same at night along with 2 oz of wheatgerm/soy oil and 2 oz of mare care plus ) My mare also gets about 8-10 flakes of brome hay a day to share with her foal, we have no pasture, they are all stalled here. The mares loosing weight is always an issue for us and consequently, we have to wean earlier than a lot of folks do. Maybe someone else can give you better advice as to what to feed your mare to keep her weight on. I really like Strategy for my maresand Omolene for the really young foals it's just too costly when you have as many as we do. |

Ev were you able to get to the site about the Cocasoya oil? That will also help your mares keep the weight on if you want to keepthe foals with them longer. |

Lori- I was off here for a few days so I don't think I saw the link for that site, would you mind posting it again? Sage is holding her own and the foal is starting to eat more grain and hay now, so hopefully, he'll quit putthing such a drain on her. I'll find out Friday if she bred back this last cycle. I want to keep her good and healthy and not stress her too much with these pregnancies. |

One thing that can really improve your mares ability to process their food is making sure they have current dental work. The better their teeth are the better they can process the food you give them. If you haven’t had her floated in a while it's a good place to start. |
