My mare had her foal a week ago and everything was going fine. Yesterday and today Riley (the foal) has been drinking water. I tried to milk her today and only one little squirt came out. her nipples are raw too from riley trying to get milk. what do i do? SHould I try milking her and bottle feeding him? or get goats milk or something? He isn't weak or anything and I think he gets some but not as much as he should, he is filled out though- and he pee's and poops which I guees means he has to be getting something but I am worried because I heard there not suppose to be drinking water this early...
thanks

Her bag is really big, she's had a bag since she was 9 months pregnant. That makes me feel better to read that your colt is drinking water and he isn't struggling.
thanks!

Thanks for the help. I really appreciate it. I am glad to here that other babies are eating early today. He started munching on Aspen's grain/grain bowl(lol- I think he was just trying to mimick her but didn't really know what she was doing?!). I watched him nurse a lot and I saw him once with a mouth full of milk and a milk mustache so I think we should be alright? He is not struggling at all and is full of energy-running around like there is no tomorrow. Aspens nipples are raw and red-is there anything I can do about it? it looks like they may start to bleed soon?
thanks again!

mine was 1 week yesterday, he plays in moms water, dont knowif he is actually drinking it, and he has been munching on moms grain since 5 days old, he has been eating straw and hay since 2 daysm i was told this is normal, but i was also told if i know/witness him drinking water i need to raise the water so they do not drink, beause it can upset their electrolite balance and cause an imbalance causing diahrea and dehydration, so just be careful.
Elena- you could try to give her a shot of oxytocin to let down her milk, maybe she is not letting down and the foal is having ot suck or work hard to get it. (I had to do this on Friday, worked wonders, vet said occasionally at 1 week when mare begins foal heat they may not let milk down)
good luck!
