My mare has some discharge from her vulva. It's kinda brownish and sticky looking. my mom said that the uterus is probably trying to fix itself like a humans? She is eating, drinking, peeing pooping, has milk etc and isn't acting weird. but I was just wondering. Her vulva looks a little swollen, but I mean can you blame her?She just had a huge baby 2 days ago!
Thanks!

My guess is that since she did have a big foal, she had a little trouble and just hasn't fully cleaned up (after birth was stuck and is just now coming loose.)

Brownish is ok and can continue for a few days.

Yellow or green is not ok, and means infection. If you think she retained any of the placenta I would call your vet also.

But brown is ok. Best wishes for mommy and baby!

It is still brownish. It has been four days. She isn't off food or anything. I don't think she retained placenta I saw it all come out.
Thanks for your wishes. i hope everything is alright.

If it's been four days I think I would ask a vet to take a look at her or atleast ask his opinion. Let us know what happens with her.

Discoloured discharge is not uncommon up until about 6 or 7 days after foaling - as long as it is clean and not purulent. If there is an indication of pus or fever in the mare then veterinary attention should be sought.

Note from above - if you have reached two days and the afterbirth has not cleared, you will typically see greater problems than brownish discharge, and the mare will typically be systemically ill. There are always exceptions, but they would be rare. It is important to evaluate the placenta for completeness though to avoid that possibility.
