I just want to know if any of you out there have had a foal born that is just plain misreable. We have a filly that just turned a month. She has been treated exactly the same as all our other foals, but all she does is pin her ears and snarl at you when you get close. We lead her and do all the normal foal things, but she is really not very likeable. Horrible to say I know but really, where did this come from. Then our other foal is at the complete opposite of the spectrum and loves people. These two just got turned out together this week and the misreable little foal is misreable to the other filly as well. She won't play or have anything to do with the other one. When she was on her own with mom she was happy to play by herself. Should add misreable foal is out of a very sweet mare. Just finding it hard to really like misreable foal, sounds terrible. Terri
oh Terri you have one of those... In 30 years of breeding I have only gotten two such foals, antisocial foals with an attitude, the good news is that they many times turn out ok, just a bit bossy (they turn out to be the herd matriarchs) both of mine were fillies also. They turned out dominant but were great with people after awhile of intensive work so do not give up on her, I have found that with time and patience they can turn around to be wonderful horses, just a bit bossy with other horses. Good luck.
Jan, Thanks for the info. My really friendly filly is not giving up on the anti-social filly. She spends her day trying to get her to play. She's not one for taking no for an answer! At least I feel I'm not alone. Terri
My Aunt and uncle had filly last year who for no apparent reason is the most horrible little thing you have ever met. We actually call her Nasty, when we are being pc. We got in a big fight with her when we were halter breaking her. She would lay her ears back and bear her teeth and try to kick. We just kept messing with her until she finally cracked. Now as a yearling she's actually sort of cuddly most of the time, I sort of think she's bipolar. I think it helped that she got turned out with some colts who wouldn’t put up with her nastiness.other colts who wouldn't put up with her nastyneess
