Kris, it is hard to see due to the angles at which we are trying to view! But I know that I have had a few large build mares, that when their milk veins fill in and the swelling is happening , it gives that kind of look. Like a little step in the the shape of their tummy. There is also another problem that can happen, There is a article here in the article section of this site, http://www.equine-reproduction.com/articles/rupture.shtml it is a ventral rupture. Make sure you keep a eye on her. |

it is mostly on one side, bigger than a vein it talkes up whole lower abdomen. look at the pics i just posted on the 348 still waiting thread, if you look closely you can see itit runs whole lenght of tummy, and almost as wide, but has a rideg in hte center...its wierd. looks ugly! |

Ya, Kris, that has happened to my mares as well, sometimes it seems that one side fills in first and then the other side follows, and runs the whole length of the tummy from the udder all the way back to the chest. My poor mare was so full and wouldn't even lay down for nearly three weeks prior to foaling. Looks pretty much like your pic you show. ?? Watch her. Kim |

Did you read the link that I posted ? Just make sure that she is doing ok and that the swelling that you see is not looking like those photos on the link. Every mare is different. My poor mare last year even developed a pin hole leak in her udder. Worried us but things turned out ok and the foal nursed and thrived. The leak did stop and must have filled in with something ! My mares that are good milk producers normally end up looking like your photo posted, even more so the experienced, year after year producers. Kim |

ok, so if she is acting "normal" which i am not totally sure what that is anymore, doent seem depressed not rapid breathing (unless seems to be in labor ) then just keep an eye on her...ok i can do that! (yes i read the article, she looks similar to the draft, but not the others) sharon i think i remember you posting on this too...so im hopefully a day away...sweet...that would be good! |

This evening, try the warm towel treatment on the udder, that's what I had to do with Ruby to get her to let me check milk. They really relax into it after a minute or two. I bet if you check tonight it's off-white opaque. |

Kris, I had a draft mare that had severe edema and that is how you test for edema. If you put a finger into it and it stays indented, that's edema. It's just something heavier mares do, it will go away after she foals! She must be getting close! Poor girl! |

It is hard to explain, but if it looks like "normal" swelling-(Edema) then dont' worry at this time. If the sweelling has problems with it then be concerned. All the vets keep telling me things like this are normal swelling(I had swelling 1 out of 3 babies). You naturally retain more fluid, there is more blood, and other fluid naturally occuring in the body. I would say that she will soon foal and return to normal. What did she do with the past foals ? Good thing to keep swelling down is not to keep her stalled up. So if you can have her out and about the swelling seems to be less in most mares. Freedom to walk around keeps all fluid moving and not pooling up in the legs and other spots. I have to say to Melissa's comment about "heavier" mares i find true. A big bulky foundation bred mare too seems to show more edima than a fine boned slimer body type mare. Good luck! Kim |

she is an arab! her legs are ok, its just her whole lower abdomen from just behind her front legs almost to her udder! she is out 12 or more hours per day, she walks around grazes, comes to the barn goes back to grazing, she is moving lots. I may take her for a walk tonight, just a 15 minute one. she did not have this AT ALL with the other two! even her first one where she was stalled 20 or more hours per day! i hope this is over SOON!!!!! |

Kris, One of my mares got edema much like the one you showed but WORSE within 1 day of foaling. I swear, it would be 5-6 inches wide, and 2 inches think...and would run down both sides of her. Keep your eyes peeled friend...no bathroom breaks for you How far along is she now? |
