I thought I would post a link so you folks could see some brand new mule babies. Hit refresh every time you check back in to see the new babies. "Eureka" has the markings I want in a saddle mule some day!! http://www.montanamules.com/html/2006_colts.html |

Fred - I have a whole new respect for mules! Those babies are gorgeous...still have funny ears! I like Eureka's markings best also. |

Ok, everyone's teasing me that my mare is going to have a mule these days...but after looking at these beautiful creatures, I'm not so worried! Nor would I be too disappointed anymore! But one question, I have heard it said that mules are born sterile due to the mixing of the species. Is this true??? |

Yep, they have a chromosomal mismatch so when mules go to produce eggs or sperm the genes don't divide properly so the don't have viable sex cells. Some molly mules have been able to breed, but it is a very rare event, and most of the mule off spring look more like their fathers, which would seem to indicate that in the fertile mules the baby inherits all of it's maternal DNA from one or the other of it's mothers parents, rather than a mix of it's grandmothers and grand fathers DNA as is more typical in same species breeding. I was actually just reviewing about hybrids for my Genetics final, so that's probably way more info than you wanted! |

Hey, any info helps! Thanks Megan...you are one smart lady! I still don't think I'm getting a mule but you never know...Missy was in the donkey pasture quite a while before she was bred with the paint. |

well, it's been what, 10 years since she was on the range...so I guess not! Unless they take THAT long! {hehe} No actually I was told Missy was born in the corral after the BLM captured her mom, for facts sake, not because of the elephant theory! I'm not quite that ring-ding YET!!!! |

How'd you do that? Missy must have wings..she's off the ground! I've always wanted a horse that can fly! That is too cool! |

photoshop works wonders, I don't have a price on that filly just yet but I'll let you know. Post some action shots of Misty and the foal when you get your new camera and I'll make you something really pretty. (Message edited by Fabmeg on May 08, 2006) |

Fred, good luck with your expectant mares. I would have to say that Conner and Circle are my favorites! They are all very beautiful mules though. |
