I thought it would be nice to post foal pictures past and present to show others thinking about breeding, awaiting their own foals and to share with other new equine grandparents out there. I will start it off with my newest arrival born 2 weeks ago today. She is a sweet little filly.

Jan, what a beautiful filly, I just love her head! I can't believe she is already 2 weeks old (I try to keep up with the posts). I'm still waiting for Patti to foal, she is 342 days today and still holding out on me. How many days did your mare go, I can't remember? I will post pics of Patti's baby when it gets here but you guys might have to help me, I'm not that good with the computer and this is my first digital camera.

Hi CC, I like to use Photobucket it makes it so easy to share, you just load them (the pictures) on photobucket then under the picture where it says URL you click on the box to highlight it then right click and copy it then post on the message board here and at the end of your post right click your mouse and click on paste, its that simple.

Jade foaled on 351 days...It felt like 2 years waiting though. I am looking forward to seeing your post that says....IT'S HERE!!!!! Good luck! I have faith that you will have a very pretty foal one worth bragging about!!!!

I don't have to be overly encouraged to show off pics of my little girl! These were taken at 1 day and 1 week (born 4-1-06). She is starting to fill out some, but is still petty thin. I think another week will show more of a difference. She is a Tennessee Walking Horse/QH cross. She looks just like her TWH daddy and they don't usually fill out until a little later - similar to the Thoroughbreds. She will shed to a jet black because that's all daddy can produce. She is definately gaited! Hooray for the future smooth ride!

http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d106/katheekj/Dream%20Catcher/AllLegs.jpg
http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d106/katheekj/Dream%20Catcher/Cactheratoneweek .jpg

Jan -she is really filling out and what a sweet face! She is such a flashy paint. I know the primary marking for a Medicine Hat is the "hat" around the ears. If there was a break in her color patch between her jaw and her ears, would she be considered a medicine hat or does she have too much color?

Shelly - I love her color...Is she a palomino paint? She looks like she has some black points though. Bucksin Paint maybe?? I love it when they curl up like little fawns.

Kathee- yep!!!!They always shed foal coat no matter what. She will come in her normal coat color then. Is her coat chort like a normal horses at this time of year or is it fluffier?

She is not nearly as fluffy as I have seen with others...both Mom and Dad don't put on much winter coat. In fact, my bay mare had more of a coat than the baby. She is fluffier than a normal summer horse coat.

Kathee i bought myself a new dig cam and it came with it. I can merge/stich any picture together any way. Then I used a program that came with my printer to do the fill in and boarder. Send me acouple of Catcher if you like and I can try it?

Lori, Chu Kash is really growing my goodness has it already been 5 weeks? Sheesh where has the time gone? I love what you did with the picture! Very nice job! He looks wonderful love the elvis look on his face with that lip! Just adorable!!!!
I am sorry Kathee for not replying earlier to your question about medicine hats, If the line of color was broken to seperate the color from the eyes down from the eyes up color it would be considered a medicine hat. It looked like it tried to be a medicine hat because there is a white spot in the field of color above the eye near the ear, but it just did not pan out. That is ok, I will keep her, to me she is perfect!!!!

Everyone, congratulations on the beautiful foals. I just can't get enough of these cute pics!
Lori, what breed is Chu Kash? He is so big and sturdy looking, and his mane is just too cute.
As for me, I am just getting into mare stare, as my first two due are at 323 and 321 days today. I can hardly wait, but it helps to be able to read about all of the new arrivals on this site every day.
Here is hoping for a successful rest of the birthing season to all.

OK I'm going to give this pic posting a try, if they don't go through let me know. In case you need the username it is cconner63 and the password is chance.

Patti is a grulla (really sheds out pretty in the summer) and the colts sire is a grulla. Baby has dorsal stripe and stripes on legs and the dark areas on his face so I think he will shed grulla also.

Joanna, the time will seem to stand still then it is here before you know it! Your mares are in the homestretch! Good luck!

Kris how far along is she now? She sure sounds close to me. Hope it is over soon so you can get some long over due sleep!

My little girl is leading like a champ now and I am so proud of her, she also loads into the trailer like she has done it all of her life. :-) How are everyone elses babies doing on leading and loading lets share the milestones shall we?

CC- she is beautiful! So well built - I am used to that stocky build as I have had QHs all my life. They are born looking older than some other breeds. This was my first go with a TWH and she looks soooo different from those solid built QHs. She has legs that go for ever and she kind of disappears when she looks right at you!

Thank Lori for the compliment on my filly, Lets see an update on Chu Kash, he is so powerful looking, with a very sweet face.

That goes for you too Kathee would love to see your little girl again she is a sweet girl and very pretty.I agree that there is an increase on the number of paint babies this year, I do notice that there are more and more Homozygous Tobiano studs advertised these days, so there might be a correlation there don't you think? Thanks for the compliments on my girl.

Kris your little buckskin colt is so sweet looking. He is a little over at the knee but do not worry about that I would say at lease half of my colts the first week are a little over at the knee, it will straighten out. I can tell he is going to be a tall sturdy looking boy, nice build.

So far this year I stand at 89% right on foal gender prediction, think I should book my vegas trip now? hehehehe I am sure my luck is going to change.....no one can be too right, just when you become a bit confident, life throws you a curve ball, so I am ready to start being very wrong very soon :-)

thanks everyone for hte compliments o him!
JAN-yeah a vegas trip might be good before the luck turns! :-)
well the vet just left, baby has a clean bill of health for now, assuming all het meconium is out now.
he got a shot of banamine for the tummy ache, he was rectally tubed with an enema and warm soapy water he was impacted with 6 hard meconium balls. they came out just before the vet left, he was himself again after that, running around and eating!!! man i was scared!!! he kept rolling, was shaking, and jerking wouldnt walk just layed down, i tell you the 1 hour wait for the vet seemed like FOREVER!!!!! trying to stop him from rolling try to keep him up and walking. UGH!
im thinking im not sure i will breed this mare again, she is real protective, she bit my daughter in the head with NO WARNING!!! not to mention the hard time had. beside she gave me just what i wanted...only way to be better would to hae been a dun...otherwise perfect so i hsould quit while im ahead!
OH THE VET SAYS "THIS IS QUITE A ROBUST FOAL TO COME OUT OF THAT MARE"
vet says hes tall but narrow, weighs about 70-75 pounds. he said he would not have wanted anything larger out of her. He is not worried right now about his hind fetlocks or his knees, but he said he is a bit narrow in the pelvis, he is hoping when he moves more in hte next couple days that it opens up while his bones are still soft. he said it is probably due to the foaling process and not confimation...but he agrees "HE'S A CUTE LI'L BUGGER"
I am glad to hear now that he isnt too little...makes me feel better!

Kris when Chu kash was born he had a bit of scicle (sp) hocks. Where they were bent in a c shape. With in two-three days and runnning in the arena he was up on his pasterns and hocks were starting to straighten. So don't worry to much.....mom! Glad to hear he is better!

Kassie she is beautiful who is her daddy? Very pretty little filly you got there!

Like Lori says it is perfectly normal for them to look a bit down in the pasterns in the front and or back, they strengthen with time.

Elena he is a very pretty boy, nice and sturdy. nice color too. cute blaze. enjoy that baby they grow up way too fast.

EVERYONE who is waiting on your foal to be born it seems forever for them to get here. But once that joyous ocassion happens, time flys by with out you knowing and all of a sudden your new born is 6 or 8 weeks old. You think back to those endless sleepless nights that drag on forever and wonder WHAT HAPPENED! Time stood still before now it goes in warp speed!!

I will load more pictures on photobucket so ya'll can see him in his lime green blanket!

Jan my mare was bred to a gray homozygous tobiano stallion. This is one of his first foals to hit the ground.

That's it. Tomorrow Catcher is getting dressed up!

Jan - with your 89% predictions that you keep claiming is just luck...are you sure you don't have a spiritual connection feeding you this info?? I am very impressed with your stats...when Catcher was born, I didn't even look because I knew it would be a boy...I am so happy to be a part of your 11%! She was a maiden and I know they are tougher...you have predicted several maidens correctly on since I have been keeping up.

Lori Chu Kash looks so great!!!!!! Like his name he looks like he is a true indian pony! :-)Very cute!!!!!
Kassie looking forward to seeing if she will turn gray or not, by the looks of her muzzle she just might. very sweet filly.

Kathee I am so glad I was wrong about your filly. I know you wanted a filly and am glad you got one. As far as the luck goes, I feel it is just that and nothing more other than observation and personal experience. I get the best results by looking at mares at 9 and 10 months before they drop, after that they all seem to look like they are carrying colts. :-)

EUREKA !!! we've finally broken the holding pattern! (well, sort of ...lol) Beth gave birth to a lovely, sorrel... drum roll... anyone care to guess ???? yeah, it's a COLT yesterday! She had no trouble in fact, she layed down as usual and 20 minutes later a little girl comes running to the house to get us because the baby's head is sticking out. He's a cutie, but still a "he". This is an unprecented year for colts in our area. Some friends of ours also had a colt born yesterday, that makes 3 for them and one filly. So far, the boys have the numbers on their side by a landslide. Anyone looking to buy a nice weanling colt? We have quite a selection to choose from..lol. Ev.
Hubby is doing ok, still has some major swelling that we had to have checked out yesterday but other than that and a good case of collic, he's doing alright at this point.

Ev- congrats to you again!!!! :-) well its not a bay this time! :-)
im sure he is still cute even though a he! is he big also?
well last night we had a bit of a problem again, about 6:00 he began getting real kicky and tail swishy and straining again...of course i cant get ahold of anyone to find out what to do, then one vet calls back...a cow vet...he was absolutely NO help!!! my vet called (well his wife did) at 9 something, said to give him 3 oz mineral oila nd 1cc banamine...yeah and i alomst can get it at htat time, and of course ihave none here...so off to hte neighbors, theyre out, so they send me to another neighbors, but on the way there we hit a frost boil and the car sinks up to teh top of the wheel well...so here ia m in the middle of nowhere...pitch black out running 1/2 mile back to hte other neighbors tripping on more frost boils and had to have them help push us out and drive me to the neighbors to talk to them, of course by now it is after 10, they are in bed sleeping...but he had some banamine...no oil though, so i just gave him banamine and checked him through the night and he was peaceful! seems ok today but im trying to get a vet here to check him out. i WAS CONCERNED BECASUE OF HIS SHIVERING, IT WAS 52 DEGREES, NO WIND HIS TEMP WAS 101.9...SO I WANT BLOOD DONE TO CHECK FOR INFECTION...
SO WE ARE STILL NOT IN HTE CLEAR! BUT HE HAS GROWN ALREADY!!!! HARD TO BELIEVE! HE SEEMS TO BE STANDING UP A BIT BETTER TODAY TOO...SO PRAYERS THAT "JERICHOS EASTER TSON" IS OK WOULD BE GOOD ABOUT NOW! (thats his name by the way, we will call him Jericho, or like my hubby says , "nope he's still a junior!"

Kathee- lol, I get your meaning, and IF I should decide to sell him, I'll give you first chance..
Kris- sorrel may was well be bay I'm afraid..he's not really huge but he is pretty well put together. I'll honestly try to get some photos of he and Kong tonight. I've not posted any of either of them thus far. Had a call from hubby, our friend's grulla mare popped out a big dun filly early this morning. ( now it's our turn again ) I'm anxious to see Sophie's foal, it's a Listo baby and she's a palomino.. probably won't have to wait too much longer to see if THAT one is a girl and can break this chain of bad voodoo we are under.
Lori- water? air? something..that's for sure.. three studs and all colts so far?? what's up with that? our roan did produce one filly on an outside mare ( of course ).

Kris, I wish you all the best with Jericho! Hopefully he will come out of this soon. You have lots of people backing you with well wishes!

RAVEN- THATS AWESOME!!!
WHAT PROGRAM IS THAT YOU CAN DO THAT?
WELL VET WAS OUT AGAIN TODAY(MY VET NOT THE LOCAL VET), DID AN IGG, WAS GREATER THAN 800, SID THATS GOOD, IS DOING WHITE COUNT AND WHATEVER AT THE LAB, WILL LET ME NOW OF ANY ABNORMALITIES. SEEMS TO BE FEELING GOOD TODAY, WAS VERY ENERGETIC AND RUNNING ALL OVER HTEPLACE...HE DEFINEATLEY HAS A MIND OF HIS OWN...GOES WHERE HE WANTS...DONT MATTER IF MOM IS CALLING! VERY TOLERANT THOUGH, RIGHT NOW HE IS WEARING AN ADULT XL SWEATSHIRT, AS IT IS SUPPOSED TO GET COLD TONIGHT, VET RECCOMENDED IT SAYS HE HAS A SUMMER COAT.
THIS VET SAYS HE IS A LARGE FOAL FOR AN ARAB MARE, AND THAT HE IS GOING TO BE WORTH SOMETHING BECAUSE OF HIS BUILD, COLOR, HEAD AND GRAND SIRES LINES HE CARRIES. TOLD ME I BETTER MAKE SURE I REGISTER HIM HALF ARAB AND QUARAB! AS HE WAS LEAVING HE TOLD ME SO ID YOU DECIDE TO SELL THAT COLT BE SURE TO LET ME KNOW!

(i said not likely, but if i do ill let ya know!:-))
so iguess for his breed he is big...ok....he just looks little i guess...

well now my concern is the mare!!! still being stubborn, is drinking less than 5 gallons of water in 24 hours...not sure how to encourage it...any suggestions?
when she peed tonight it was thick and not much, then she pooped and it was dry and not much...i hope she will be ok!!!!

Kris I might suggest giving T some salt mixed in with her grain and/or either add some electrolites to her feed, water or syringe it into her mouth mixed with water(Finishline Product Apple-a-day very good). I had read somewhere to give the mare a hot bran mash after birth for a couple of days. Did this for a few days with Lady and had no trouble. If she is not getting enough liquids that is why her urine is the way it is(highly concentrated) as well as her poop. Also she will not be able to produce enough milk.
Ah, the program is the same one as I used for Chu kashes pic. It came with my camera and printer.
Hope both T and Jericho are doing better?
Glad you like the pic!

Jan- I don't think I've posted photos of Sophie, she's wide.. that's about all I can tell you ( I'm mare blind now after staring at so many for so long a time ) I thought sure Beth would have a filly but nope.. so I give up guessing, they just are not playing by the rules this year at all..lol. Sophie had a filly last year but I honestly cannot say if she looks about the same this year or not, but I doubt we have to wait a whole lot longer to find out. Frosty is 340 days today ( maiden mare ) she is pretty large too but her udder just isn't much to speak of at the moment so I'd be surprised if she has it anytime too soon. Then again, she may not have read the foaling manual either !

ok going to have to manage a guess with no sight, so my guess is sophie with a filly and frosty with a colt. lets see how my gut does with no mare to look at, I never tried this before so we will see what happens. :-) seems kind of fun.

Jan- now you are REALLY going out on a limb, I hope you are correct though. Sophie and Sandy are the last two bred to Listo and getting fillies out of them would almost make up for having all the colts we've had thus far! I'm taking Sage back to the vet in a couple of weeks to find out if she took on her foal heat. She seemed to have a prolonged heat cycle and the lady insisted she needed some HCG so we'll see, I have a feeling she's not in foal but my gut isn't always right.

Ok so here he is :-) Ya HE , born yesterday afternoon out in the pasture , he was a little toughie to come he had both front feet ontop of his head , so it was a little tense with just me and the mare here ugh . He didnt latch on too good and actually just started on his own :-) I had to syringe feed him his colostrum and now he is booting around like a race horse :-) These are his 2-3 hour old photos :-)

Now we need a name lol :

Mom is MG RAPID CINNABAR
Dad is ETERNALIST

Don't even have a barn name for him , he was supposed to be that special ordered filly I wanted heheh .

Jan- Frosty is a different mare, she's a 4 y/o and this is her first, she's 341 today. Sophie is a palomino 4 y/o she's 330 today. Then there's Sandy, 322 days, Ruby 322 days and Brandy who will be 320 on Saturday.. those are the last ones.. Sandy and Sophie are bred to Listo, the others to our red roan stud we had last year ( he's sired all colts but one so far )

Anita- you have a very pretty palomino colt.. I'm jealous of all the color on this board!

Kris- how's the youngster doing ? No one stayed at the barn last night and I came in at 6 this morning so I didn't have time to check, there are probably a couple of new ones down there..lol
Had an email from the gal who owns the other mare we sent to HI, she got a red roan filly yesterday so that stallion we had CAN produce girls.. maybe one of the three left that are bred to him will actually have one. I'll keep you posted, Ev.

EV-maybe its your water...killin' off the girl sperm...LOL!!!
I really hope you get at least ONE listolena filly!!!
Jericho is doing pretty good now.very energetic and his hind legs look good, fronts still a little bucked, hes filling out nicely, and hes a strong li'l sh--! wanted to put some betadine on his navel, he didnt like the cold stuff, tried to jump away...almost did, I was not expecting him to be so strong already!
He is an adventerous curious little stinker, he likes to go check things out, mom gets mad, nickers to him, if he dont come back she will go to him and nudge him, he will turn around and kick her...double barrell! it is funny now, but i anticipate i will get that too when be begin "training" this weekend. He also does that ot her when he is beating on her for milk and she squeals and lifts her leg.
I semi-lead him with halter and lead yesterday, rope to halter, around rear end, most direction is from halter, rear end to remind to come forward when he decides to stop, so far he is the easiest ive done, no fight at all, so lets see if he is that cooperative for everything! this weekend he will learn to pick up feet for cleaning...should be fun. He does pretty good with his fronts and with putting on and taking off his sweatshirt(over the head type) jsut stand willingly, so i hope he is good!
This is the second colt i have ever owned, and the first was halter broke and did ok with his feet when i got him. everything else around here has been fillys, so well see if there is a difference between boys and girls.
I am in hte process of filling out his papers for his registries ("QUARAB" and "HALF ARABIAN" double registered)
cant see his white markings on his hind real well, cna see that he has a white hoof, and part of it, but cant define the edges, so i may need to wait. He is so light colored it is hard to see hte white.
heres pics from yesterday morning.

Jan- I'll keep you posted, still nothing new this morning.. apparently, we aren't the only ones in the area that have had a wierd year. A neighbor's mare ( 19 y/o) went 370 days before she had a stud colt. Also she said her mare's udders were not the norm either, now I don't feel quite as badly about being unable to figure out when these foals were going to drop. The other mare I sent to HI had a filly yesterday. Here is the link to her first photos for those who want to look. (this colt and the other one in the pictures are out of our red roan stud we had for a short time last year)
Kris- that colt looks like he's FULL of energy..and he's a beauty, I think those legs will straighten out. A friend of mine recommends a supplement called " foal aid " it's just a vitamin paste, she swears it helps though if you want to get some and give him a shot of it. Ev

Darlene -congrats and waiting on pics!

Anita - he looks like a palomino- I don't see any dark points or primative dun markings

Kris - he is so beautiful - I know you are enjoying him

Here are two pics of how my girl spends her day -playing with a ball and sleeping while her servants attend to her!

Lori - Wow! He is big and beautiful!

Kim - thank you - he is a she with a boy name!

Everyone - I am back - did you miss me? I have been so wrapped up with Spring Break, Mom visiting and major home projects - like putting in a do-it-yourself sprinkler system on 2 acres - that I have not even been able to read the board and I am about 180 posts behind. I am sure I have missed so much and I will try to catch up. Congrats to all the new babes I missed!
P.S. I also sent my other mare to the breeder and she was sent home for bad behavior...apparently she needs to know her boyfriend better before she consents...they are going to let me pasture breed her when they turn out 3 of their mares with him...who figured a mare with a moral conscience

Kim well mom is about 14.3-15h and dad is 15.2h so I do not know where he is getting the growth from as far as being a tall boy. But hey I'll take it!

Kathee, ya, you have been missed on here! Your mare is not out of the unusuall. Use to have a dog that would only breed with one, which was her buddy. Strange how some are. Good luck with the pasture breeding this time, hope she takes!

Hi everyone! Sorry I have been away so long but had family visiting me, you know how that can be I am sure. The foals are growing up so fast! Catcher is looking as lovely as ever, Chu Kash is growing into the stud he is going to become.. he is a hunk!

Elena that baby is so sweet looking a very kind eye.

Here is my filly now at 5 weeks old, how the time flies she is 11.2 hands right now. her dam is 15.3 and her sire is 16.1 so she should be around 15.3 or 16 hands keep up with the updated pictures everyone! hug the little ones for me!

IT IS SCARY TO THINK IN A MONTH JERICHO WILL BE THIS BIG!!! (WELL MAYBE)
AND WHEN I THNK BACK TO THIS TIME A YEAR AGO WHEN PRECIOUS MY YEARLING WAS BORN IT SO SAD, BECASUE SHE IS ALMOST 14.2 HANDS NOW! AND LOOKS LIKE A HORSE, NOT A BABY...IT GOES WASSSYYYY TOO FAST! (PRECIOUS IS OUT OF SAME STALLION AS JERICHO) HE IS THE SAME SIZE OR BIGGER THAN PRECIOUS AT THE SAME AGE..SO WELL SEE IF HE GROWS AS BIG. (MARES ARE SAME HEIGHT TOO, JUST ONE IS AN ARAB ONE A QH).
OH AND JAN...HOW DO YOU KEEP HER OS CLEAN? I SWEAR JERICHO FINDS THE DIRTIEST SPOT TO LAY IN...HES FILTHY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Thanks everyone for your kind comments on her, I do not know why she stays so white I have not bathed her at all yet and she runs around and lays down in an area which is very dirty since all of the grass has been eaten and there is nothing but dirt now, so who knows...think it maybe the teflon I sprayed on her coat? giggle..just kidding about that. She does have a very feminine face. Lets keep those updates coming! :-)

Hi all,

Jan, she's a beauty :-). What a sweet girl...and so much white!! And YES, they do grow up fast, don't they?

Lori, Chu Kash is massive! Something tells me he'll pass his momma's heighth for sure...

Kathee...a mare with morals, huh?

Kim...
Buddy is a BIG boy. Time has gone by fast. He is now 3+ months old, and has gone through 5, yes 5 halters. He has outgrown all of his foal halters, and a pony one. I fit him with a weanling halter today....as none of the others would work.
I have pics of him, but he is "unfit" to show to the outside world! He is molting, but will be a handsome man in a few days, as he is almost done. He is shedding out black (with a brown nose :-) ). When he's bad, I call him "my little mule". He is a dear boy...and so good.
Since I'm hiding him behind the barn right now, I will attach a pic of him right after birth so we can all get a good "aaawwww" factor....but I will have some good photos of him this weekend.

Elena, as of right now I am not sure what I am doing with Chu kash. But yes I would like to keep him a stud as long as he is good!

Heather, come on now we all know what foals look like when they shed out. Show us some pics!!! You know like the ones our parents have of us to embarass us later in life!!! hehe
When we love them they are handsome at any stage in life!! Nice pic of Buddy as a baby..AAAAWWWW!

Amazing how quickly they do grow!!!

Still have no stable name for him. His official/proper name will be "Masterful" as his Daddy was called Masterpiece and his mummy is Doubtful - so its a bit of each!! Any suggestions on a stable name gratefully received!!

He at long last decided to have a bit of a sleep this afternoon and gave mum a bit of peace!! Had their first outing in the field today too and no problems there either - he has a lovely balanced canter already too!! Will get some more piccies up soon!

Congrats to Melissa too!!

Here are some updated pics of Catcher. She was one month on the 1st. What a little doll with such a sweet and playful personality. She is so much fun!
http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d106/katheekj/Dream%20Catcher/4weekslayingdown .jpg
http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d106/katheekj/Dream%20Catcher/4weeksstanding.j pg

I was going to post a pic from her other side, but she is a carbon copy!

She received her first taste of the electric fence today. We have a top wire above the regular horse fencing. I was squating down and petting her through the fence when the cat walked up and startled her. She threw her head up and hit the fence while I was still touching her and leaning against the metal pole...ouch for both of us! She ran, I jumped back, the cat took off and the loud popping noise sent my mare running, too. She will probably be permanently afraid of cats now!

PS - she appears to be shedding into the black and white I was promised! She has the racoon eyes also, but it is hard to tell because they were already pretty dark. As I understand the shedding, they will not really complete their shed until next spring when they shed their winter coat. Is that correct?

Hi Kathee,
Your filly is precious...such a pretty girl!
She will start shedding her foal coat, and go straight into her permenant coat. She will look like a shiney show filly :-).
Then, she'll get her winter coat like any other horse, and shed out in the spring, etc. So, to answer your question, the shedding of the foal coat at around 3 months of age (approx.) will be complete.
My colt is almost done shedding his coat, and is as glossy as they get. I can now see what his permanent coat color looks like (black/brown). The shedding process takes forever!

Melissa!!!!!! CONGRATES!!!!!! she is precious!!!!!! I am so happy for you.... as for being right...just get lucky sometimes! Glad you got what you wanted cannot wait to see the pictures.

Kathee Catcher is getting more and more beautiful everytime I see her, she is so feminine and regal looking.

Heather sounds like your colt is looking more and more like momma everyday, do you think he will be a seal brown or a black? I have some seals and some blacks one fast black one faded black and two seal browns which look black at times with brown around the muzzle. all are gorgeous to me though.
Joanna, love the foals, that colt Jackson will make a nice sport horse prospect, lots of leg and strength there. very nice looking studs you have there also, nicely built both of them.

Elena Riley looks great very nice hip on that boy! You have every right to feel proud of him.
Congrates Megan on your first filly looking forward to the pictures!

Kathee I've found that it depends on the horse how long it takes them to get to a permanent color. I had a filly who in her foal coat showed almost no dorsal stripe, no dorsal stripein her winter coat and this spring, bam-o we have dorsal stripe! ALso I have a rabisco colt who gets more white hairs every year!

Megan, love your mare she is a beaut!!!! that little filly is not little at all. she should turn out great! Congrates on her.

Kathee I agree with Megan and Heather in that by 3 to 5 months you should see the permanant coat color, when it comes to grays or things like roaning it may not fully show up till the next spring or in grays and roaning it may take 3 years to get it fully. So as you can see all of the answers and things you heard are right in some way or the other...unless of course you read/hear that the coat color never changes at all....giggle.

Greying is interesting factor. I have a 3 year old that was born bay with black points and a dorsal stripe. He is greying out but at 3 he still has the majority of his base coat with his head mostly grey. His momma took 10 years to really go grey.

Hey all,

Kris...your colt is SO handsome! What an utterly fabulous head he has. Can't yell at that face, can you?????????

Jan,
Buddy does look a lot like his mommy. He is definately a seal brown...but goodness his coat is really black. He's a good boy. I will get some pics of him this weekend. Went out to get a few pics of him the other day, only to find a poor, pathetic sick foal (OH NO!!).
So, needless to say, no pics. He is doing well now, but gave me a heck of a scare...stayed up with him all night...talking to the vet, etc.
To make a long story short, he developed an abscess in a hind foot, blew a high fever, lethargic, etc. A big vet bill, and little sleep later...he's well on the mend. Now, I'm going to need a stiff drink...

Heather healing prayers are sent your way for your little one! I added a picture of one of my seal brown mares, in summer she looks Jet black but in the winter alot more brown comes out. She keeps the brown on her muzzle though year round!

Wow - Kathee, doesnt seem like a month ago that little catcher was born! I would have thought she was only about 2wks old now - She is beautiful though, I knew you'd get a stunner from dream - I just love her, but I didnt expect that colour until you showed me the stud. Well picked I must say : )

Heather - Any pictures you are willingt o post of dear little buddy yet? Poor thing, hiding away for his shedding phase (I think I like that idea though) Cant wait to see how big he has got, he was a VERY handsome boy.

ANita - Windsor is a darling too huh? Palamino? PPr is that my screen!

Im sure Jericho is just gonna look like a baby forever Kris - And probably still with that 'butter wouldnt melt' look at 7years old!

Congrats to all with new foals - I have been off line for that long, but I sure feel like I missed a lot! Good luck with all your babies, and old timers....

My bay and white tobiano filly (Amber)has black and white mane. The filly tail is black, but look close to it the tail has a few white hairs at the very end of the tail. I am thinking when she is older there might be more white hairs. I wanted to see your filly again. What is the site for your horses, I forgot?I think my filly looks some what like yours, I think.

Hey,
The sad part is the person we sold the sire to, had him gelded. My filly is the only foal he will have register with APHA. The vet and my husband said they were going to get me for selling him, after seeing his foal. The sire was a solid bay breeding stock paint with blaze face and white socks. My mare nor the sire had blue eyes. We think she got the blue eye from the sire father the overo paint.I wish now I would have keep the stud, because the foal is sooo cute.

Hi!
Just want to say thanks to everyone who commented about Riley. I haven't been on here for a while! He does have a great character and is a really good little boy. He's actually gotten over all his bad habits (biting, jumping on people, kicking). I started Clinton Anderson with him and he's learning so fast. I'd really recommend it for anyone who's training a foal! I am probably going to get new pictures on the website in the next few days!
Congrats to everyone who has foals! They're all sooo cute! and I know you'll hear this a 100 times but they DO grow up SO fast! Riley's 3 weeks today and it seems like yesterday when he was born. But have fun and start them with everything young. Riley's not really afraid of anything...including tarps, wheel barrows, quad runners, cars, trucks, baco's (can't spell that) and he loves people and everything.
Oh yea- he's so cute, when I pick up his feet I'll do one front foot then he'll cock the back foot getting ready for me to pick it up!!! He's so smart!

Jan H.,
Yes we are planning on keeping Amber the bay and white tobiano filly. Some people tell me Amber might be tovero, what do you think? This is our first filly born on our place. This is only our second foal born on our place. We are new to the breeding.LittleMan(Annie's foal from last year was our first foal born here.)We still have him as well. LittleMan is homozygous for the tobiano gene, so is Annie(his mother). Amber the filly is the last one from the stud we had, the new owner gelded him(because he was a breeding stock paint). If they could have see Amber they would have not gelded him, I should have keep him. We don't ever no what we are going to get. Could you send pictures of your sire of your foal to me? Do you leave the halter on your filly? We have put Amber's halter on twice so far.
You can see Little Man

I would say that your filly is a Tovero, but it is still classified as a tobiano on the papers. She is gorgeous! Enjoy her.

Here is the picture of "Lucky Two Straws" who is a Tovero like your filly but is registered as a Tobiano with the APHA Aamerican Paint Horse Assn.)

Jan H,
I got Cindy Harris to send me paper work about her studs about a month ago. I was thinking of breeding Annie to her stud Final Review, because Annie is homozygous for the tobiano gene.I was wanting a palomino and white foal. I think his stud fee is $750. Did you have the sperm send to your vet's office or what?We live in Mississippi. Do you live close to her? Did you like the results from their farm? Annie foaled late, so we are not sure if we will breed her this time. I have three studs in mind. I just hate to send my foal and mare off to breed. I am hating I sold my breeding stock paint stud now.I sold the stud, before I knew my mare Annie was homozygous for the tobiano gene. I was afraid he would produce solids with Annie, if I only had know.Everyone taught I was crazy for breeding my tobiano mare to a solid bay breeding stock paint. The folks said you will mostly get a solid foal. The folks said most paint breeds breed to tobiano, tovero, overo, splash paint and etc., not solid paint if you are wanting paint foals. I wish I would had tested Annie sooner for the homozygous gene.
THANKS Melissa

It's a girl!!!
She is just so sweet, her facial markings are adorable.
I watched Rockette (the mare) all evening, and she had started to seem pretty uncomfortable, so I was keeping a very close eye on her. I started to doze off at about 1:15, and set my alarm to go off at 2:00. Well, 2:00 came, and there was Rockette laying down and the baby was already born!
Thankfully, Rockette had the placenta within five minutes, so I didn't have to deal with a retained one like with Satin.
Anyway, mom and baby are perfectly happy and healthy, the entire thing was textbook perfect.
Here are some pics: http://apdhorses.com/daisy.htm
I just can't get over her face! (probably because Rockette has never had a foal with more than a tiny star )

Got her color and refinement, but his daddy's size. Can't tell from the pics, but his head is actually quite refined too...the halter fits him, but makes his head look bulky because of the thick straps.
Believe it or not, he is a ribby guy! All that bulk you see is just him....muscle and legs. I'm not even creep feeding him. He eats what Grace allows and plenty of hay. His size is one of the reasons I'm not allowing him to free creep, as I don't want him getting heavy. Since he is staying just fleshy enough to not see his ribs from a distance, but easily by touch or close up....and momma lets him eat, I'm leaving it at that for right now.

Cindy Harris is wonderful to work with and she collects the semen herself and with her husband they package it and I can tell you they are very thorough. They have one of the most mare owner friendly AI contracts out there and they test their stallions to make sure they are OLW NN so no lethal white foals.. they do a great job with no collection or chute fee's. You will love working with them and the semen ships great on all of their stallions as far away as California! I think you will be impressed! Good luck!

Heather,
Sure you just have to send me the one pic that I love of them
I would not worry too much about him bulking up he looks fine from what I see. Chu kash as well does not have a creep feeder he eats what Lady lets him even though he has his own bucket in there with half of her feed in it. I'm having to cut down on their grain intake because they are leaving most of it in there, even Lady. She is actually putting weight on and dappling up again.

To make things even more interesting with Madison (the buttermilk buckskin), she is also tobiano. In the right light you can see where 'color' ends and white starts...I was expecting a buckskin, but nothing as light as this. Her adult coloring should be striking. You can see her color to white a bit in this pic.

Hello,
My my Annie the black and white with the bay and white filly name Amber are at the stud farm this week. I miss them dearly. I wanted to know what color do you all thing we will get with black and white tobiano homozygous for the tobiano gene breed to a palomino and white tobiano? I think my mare Annie is almostly homozygous for the black gene as well. You can see the stud on the site below. This is this studs last year to breed to the outside folks.

Thanks jan O and Kathee, of course I am very biased...I have raised many a colt over the years, but I have to say I am just in love with this little girl.. maybe because this year I only had one foal born, and the other years I had 2 or 3 born, it may be in part to losing the twins this year....But Digger is being bred back this month so i am feeling hopeful again for next year. Keep the updates flowing everyone!!! We are family after all. :-)

Virginia -your foal is pretty, lovely markings - he has a bandana across his head! Im not usually one for blue eyes, but he is just such a lovely foal with beautiful markings... Well done to you!

Okay I am here to brag. My mare foaled last night at 8:15pm. She started dripping milk at 7pm last night and never waxed at all she was ate her oats and started eating her hay so I didn't think anything of it right away assumed she would go sometime during the night but went out at 8pm to check on her and she was on the ground with the feet and nose out already. Everything went good and she is a wonderful mommy. Baby is very curious especially with my 6 year old daughter very friendly and playful already...

Kerry
the foal is to cute. I am finish with foal watch this year. I only had two mares breed for 2006, they both have foaled. I can sleep now. I am enjoying playing with the new foals. I have a question the new mini filly born Monday, she likes to buck and kick at you when you try to pet her or anything. Does anyone know what I can do to stop this, but yet have her still like me? The mini foal don't weigh much, but she is strong.
Mini foal I add a few more pictures today of her.

After reading your posts and seeing all the gorgeous babies, I can't resist sharing mine, a buckskin TWH filly born April 17, named Brandy. I bred for a naturally gaited buckskin or palomino from my black mare, hoping for a buckskin, so I'm so excited! :-) And she gaits up a storm. Here are a couple pictures of her, but photo bucket is giving me some trouble. I'll try a couple more later.

Susan .. she is beautiful!! I bred...and received... a gaited baby also looking for that future smooth ride. She has a QH Momma, but got Daddy's TWH gait. Question...you called her a buckskin, but she looks like she has a dorsal stripe..is she really a bucksin or a dun?

Thanks for your kind words, Jan and Kathee! Yes, I love that gait! It's funny, I looked for a stallion with a great walk (as well as a cremello with two agouti genes) so I'd be sure to get a foal with great gait as well as color--but the first time I saw her actually nodding and walking up a storm I could hardly believe it! I had never actually seen a baby Walking Horse, and it just looks so cute. Although now she pretty much gallops everywhere she goes.

Kathee, I see what you mean that it looks like she has a dorsal stripe, but I think it's what I've seen people on some threads call "line shading." She doesn't have shoulder or leg stripes, and it's just a faint line, not a real true dorsal stripe. Also, the stallion is a cremello, doesn't have the dun factor. The people I board with raise QH's and have bred duns and grullas, but they call her a buckskin, too. Normally her "stripe" isn't as obvious as it is in that particular picture; many times you don't even see one at all. That's cool that you got a gaited horse from your QH/TWH cross. What did you get? Colt or filly? Color?

Jan, Peruvian or Finos? :-) I'm ashamed to admit I'm a bit fuzzy on the difference. Maybe you could educate me!

Hi Susan Lea,

Thanks for asking, Paso Fino, the easiest way to explain the difference is Paso finos walk like a sewing machine when in the fino, very very fine little steps with very slow forward motion. It is amazing to see one in full fino. Peruvian's swing their feet out, walks like a duck. Both are smooth to ride. Paso seem more refined and Peruvians stockier. My pasos are stickly trail horses and are very sure footed on hills and trails, very willing partners. They have a incredibly lope and gallop that you sit with very little movement. and the are short and narrow!!!
At the barn there are a couple of TWH's and I love their action. Very flashy sweet horses!

Susan Lea - never ask me for a pic unless you are serious!!! Here are a few of my gal:
http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d106/katheekj/Dream%20Catcher/7weeksCatcher.jp g Taken today - 7 weeks old - she is shedding out black and white
http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d106/katheekj/Dream%20Catcher/Day1gaitedpic.jp g Taken on day 1 -just a walk, but see the gait!
Now here is Dad. As you can see, her borrowed my mare to grow this foal as she looks nothing like Momma and everything like Daddy.
http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d106/katheekj/PatchesFullBody.jpg
I believed the breeder when she said that this brown little baby was really black (Dad is homozygous for black), but i was really glad to see it start happening. She is mostly shedding around her face, but she has some black areas now, on her knee, her neck and her flank are all turning to that jet black. Next year she should look just like Dad which is what I ordered!!!! A tall, black and white tobiano gaited filly!!!

Kim - Mom is as far away as possible in the pasture being thankful someone else is entertaining the baby!
Here is a size comparison to show how much she has grown. She is not bulky at all - she has the Tennessee Walker slim build, but she is definately getting much taller.

Here are the reasons her Mom was happy to not be in charge of entertainment! (Mom is really dirty - she had just rolled)

Jan,
Thanks so much, I think I've finally got it: Paso FINO = FINE gait, while the Peruvians swing! Your description was very helpful. I was at a gaited horse clinic & saw a woman ride what I now know was a Fino--it was like it was in slow motion, lovely to watch. Then the clinic leader got on and whooped that horse into high gear, and it was really amazing. She definitely rocked him out of his comfort zone!

Kathee,
Catcher is gorgeous; no wonder you are so thrilled with her. I can see the black where she's shedding out. Actually, her whole family is gorgeous! Yes, she does look like her daddy! Funny, Angel is completely happy to let Brandy be with the other horses, though she stays nearby. Brandy has made friends with Glory, the gray two year old in the one picture; she was having fits today because Glory had "school" on the longe line and couldn't be in the pasture with Brandy. Angel actually came and whickered very commandingly, but Brandy completely ignored her and waited at the fence for Glory! Well, at least she knows where the faucet is!
You were so smart to take the same basic photo at different times. Catcher has grown amazingly! I'll have to compare some of Brandy's photos. She is just starting to shed out on her muzzle. After reading everyone's posts, I'm prepared to see her get really ratty looking!

Kathee, I can see the size difference, I think I will have to copy you and do a photo comparison too. At the moment I have Day 1, Day 3 and day 4...actually Im not sure what days I have thinking about that - Ill have to make a folder quick so I dont forget again. Hopefully there are dates on the camera!! I take so many so regulary even I will get sick of seeing them (maybe not..)

I like the pictures of 'why mums happy not to entertain'! Great shots, I take my pictures of a video camera recording so I should be able to get some later, she hasnt started to climb on mum yet. I knew dream would have something really pretty anyway before catcher was born, Im not disapointed! I know your not either - Ive seen you bragging

Thanks Kim - You have always had such kind words for Dream. I am kind of hooked on her and Catcher! Catcher is in a pasture with her Mom and a 21 year old mare that is even less interested in "playing" than her Mom is. The 5 year old gelding is the one who looks at her through the fence and wants to play, but I won't let him near her! He would probably be fine, but after all the stories I have heard there is no way I would risk putting him in with her yet. He feels very rejected. Maybe around 6 months when she is more horse size I will give them a try together.
