Jos,
Maybe you can shed some light on this for me. We have a 24 yr old mare who was AI'd once. Due to the time of season, she was either going to be in foal or we were going start fresh this year. She has never shown heat signs what so ever to either stallion (she'd show to anything). Her hypothetical due date was March 18. We palpated her 2 weeks ago and can not feel a foal. (She is a big bodied mare and you're lucky if you can get past her hip bones when you palpate). Her bag is very undeveloped but starting to get some edema in her mammary veins finally as of about 5 days ago, but nothing hugely enlarged. Belly is very wide and she's definatly bell shaped from the front when you look at her. We're really wondering if she's gone this long with a phantom pregnancy. Vulva's enlongated some, but nothing big to speak of. If she doesn't foal by the 8th, we're going to have a full repro exam done on her. Any thoughts???

It would be unlikely that an experienced rectal palpator would miss a foal this close to term. If there's any doubt, I'd check her again.

When she was palpated last year after she went "over" her due date, the vet had a hard time getting in far enough rectally to palpate her and had to stretch to get the ultrasound to work due to her body.
