My mare won't let me touch her udder for cleaning, she is to date,335 days . So she is only a few days away. Has anyone had this experience? And what did you do? Tahnks for the help |

Approach and retreat would probably work. Work up her leg until she is a tiny bit uncofmy then go back down to where its okay, and so on until you can touch her udder, when you touch her udder retreat and pet her until she doesn't mind. This is just an idea I have, it will probably take a lot of time but the best thing is to be patient. Good Luck! Elena |

Cyndi - my maiden mare was the same way when her udder started to really fill. Prior to that she would let me touch her. I was just patient and like Elena said, tried the "approach and retreat" a couple times a day. As she got closer to foaling, she didn't seem to mind the handling as much. Has your mare let you touch her up until now? It could just be painful if she is starting to fill. |

mine as a maiden did not like her touched at all ever...when the foal was born she would not let the foal either, we had to tranq her and tie her tight against the stall for 12 hours, then she accepted it and was fine from that point on. |

Cyndi - I find that my maiden's are really sensitive right now also (335 days). They seem to be a little smaller at night, so I clean them then when they are less swollen. |

Yes, I have always been able to clean her and touch her anywhere. She is kinda grumpy, which I know is expected. I think she is just really sore. She is getting to tight in her udder ! I don't know how much longer she will go.... tonight being a new moon, I'm hoping tonight is the night. I will be with her the most of the night , just in case. I will put up photos after my baby comes. I really apprecaite all of the input. It is great here. i am still learning how to use the site though, so bear w/me... I also put a radio in the barn, it seems to calm her. I am so afraid she will not except her baby, She is such a winch when it comes to other horses. |

When all else fails, remember that in the wild they don't get thier udders cleaned, so I wouldn't worry too much. I can't clean between Dream's udders anymore...just the outsides. I hope your gal turns out to be a terrific, loving mom. She will probably surprise you. It sounds like you are in our weekend horse race to foaling, also. I hope we all make it to the finish line! |
