Our mare foaled last Wednesday. As we were doctoring the baby, I noticed that her eyes were blood red where normally they would be white. I dismissed it slightly as I assumed that this cou;d've been due to the pressure in the birth canal; however, as I was feeding this morning, I noticed that they are still this way. Has anyone experienced this? It has been 4 days since birth. I guess I'm concerned about oxygen supply during birth. If the pressure was great enough to cause this in her eyes, could it have caused permanent damage?
Other than that, she seems healthy - actively nursing and moving around.
Just an update in case anyone else has this problem. The "bloodshot" appearance has went away and her eyes are white where they were red. Vet says this is normal due to pressure in the birth canal. It takes awhile for it to go away.
