My mare was given her last round of pre-foaling shots (Flu, Tetanus and Encephalitis) on day 318. She is now at day 352. I was under the understanding the last shots were to be given in the last 30 days of pregnancy. Will this affect anything or will she need to be immunized again post-foaling. (I really don't want to overdo it). I just want to make sure the foal gets the antibodies it needs - if it EVER comes . THANKS! |

Peggie hi. I just made arrangements for my mare to have her jabs - she is at 290days and will be at 295 days when the vet comes out - I told her that was a month and two weeks before her due date and she said that that would be fine. I was actually going to post and see if everyone here agreed with her on that because I thought it was a bit early... Does anyone else have any info? Jos maybe? |

Im sorry to go on - But does anyone have an opinion they would share, whether they think this is too early? I guess you can go something like six weeks either side whith the jabs normally, so maybe its not - my mare is pastured and stable alone until the little one arrives, and we dont go anywhere like shows or anything? What do you think? Id really like some input... Thanks guys |

"Mfg" = "Manufacturer". The object of immunisation 30 days in advance of foaling is to elevate colostral antibody levels to their maximum, thereby offering the best passive transfer levels of IgG to the newborn foal. If the foaling ends up being more than 30 days after the immunisation then the colostral levels may not be quite as high, but I would not be too concerned until 60+ days have elapsed, at which point one needs to be aware that the success of passive transfer maybe compromised. The trouble is that re-immunising at that point will probably be a waste of time as the mare is likely to foal within the next 30 days (when antibody levels would again be at their peak following the re-immunisation). It is always advisable to perform a blood test on the foal somewhere between 9-12 hours post-foaling to confirm good IgG transfer (passive transfer). Failure to perform that test - regardless of good quality colostrum - will result in a higher chance of neonatal septicaemia, but the positive outcome of a test is not a guarantee of health in itself. This is a multi-step process towards a positive outcome.- Elevate antibodies with suitable mare immunisation;
- Ensure good IgG levels in the colostrum using a colostrometer or similar device;
- Check the foal IgG levels with a blood test at 9-12 hours;
- Continually monitor the foal for indications of good (or bad) health.

Thanks Jos - I did call the vet again today, I had to leave a message with the receptionist..............The vet never called me back! Ill call again in the morning to re-schedule. I have spent months going over everything, I dont want to mess it up now. I knew when I wanted the vet to come, but I asked her she said 'no- itll be fine a bit early, dont worry' - Well they are supposed to know! It threw me a bit, but its always better to be safe than sorry - and never chamge your mind at the last minute. Thanks Again!!!! |

Hello! Thankyou for your input - I have moved my jabs to the 20th April now which will make my mare 318 days when they come - Does that sound ok? Its not too close to foaling now is it, with her only being two days off 320? Thanks again! Newby - Kim : ) |
