I went out to check our mare, shes at 342 days, this morning. She was standing with her hind leg propped up. I put out her hay but she just stood there. When she finally started walking she was limping on her back leg. While she was eating her hay every 5-10 minutes she would jerk and just freeze, like something jolted her. Her baby seems to be very active today. I could see movement in the sunken places behind her hip bones on the sides of her tail, it actually looked like the baby was moving up there. She has walked on her foot some during the day, even put all her weight on it and rested the other side for alittle while, but then she jerks and shifts it back. Anyone know anything about this?

Dianne- I have a friend whose mare did the same thing for a day or two ,tehn the next day she couldnt move at all, by that afternoon she had a beautiful colt on the ground...and whe was fine so it was likely on a nerve according to her vet (who was to come out that afternoon to check on the lame mare.)
good luck sounds like you to could be having a li'l one soon!

Dianne my mare is doing that right now she is 350 days today, she cocks her leg in a weird angle too when it is resting, stops and looks startled then shifts legs back and forth and when she walks she looks like she can not pick that foot up very high she almost partially drags her toe as she takes a step, she does not want to walk around unless she has too. Her bag is so tight it looks like it is going to burst and she was pawing alot and laying down getting up pawing and laying down again last night I thought for sure "this is it she is in labor" But NO.
What you are seeing is perfectly normal for SOME mares. but it should not be long now so watch her carefully!

Just went to check on her (Zorro)she is still favoring that side. She did put weight on it and walk to me when I put out her hay. Baby still active. I forgot to mention, she was sweating after the jolting and wobbling almost like she was about to fall yesterday. She didn't lay down all day, I know cause I was hiding in the hay loft watching her. LOL She has been bagging up for the last 3/4 days (this is the second time for that) Her udder is not tight yet though. Her ribs are showing and have been for a couple days. My son (her owner) has a service project at church today at 10 (Hope she didnt hear us talking about it last night)and my oldest has physical therapy at 1130 (just had knee surgery) so I will be back and forth instead of laying in the loft silently waiting and watching.
And so the saga continues!
Thanks for the words of encouragement,it really help calm the frazzled nerves!@#!@#!@#@

Dianne- my mare did that about two days before she foaled, I'd say your getting close to having a baby.. good luck, Ev. ( mine also swelled clear up into her hocks and knees till they were almost double in size, I've never seen a horse swell like she does, but she did it last year before foaling too. I believe it's because she doesn't lay down much like the other pregnant mares, but still it's worrisome to see those joints get so big ! )
Jan- get out the shop vac, that mare has had plenty of time to cook that baby!! I'm getting impatient! I did a recheck on my breeding dates, by Avery's last cover she's only 329 today.. so she's not really late..maybe I'll still get a filly after all.

Hi all!
Last check on Zorro, she seemed to be alittle more comfortable this evening than she was yesterday. She looks thinner than she has, guess that baby is in position!!!Her foot or ankle on the leg she is favoring is slightly swollen. Her bag has gotten alot bigger the back side is tight & shiny. Her rear end doesnt look like it has changed that much though. She is eating everything in sight and drank all her water. The baby doesnt seem to be as active this afternoon. But it is still moving.
Jan how is your girl today? Hope she is doing better too!!
Thanks again for letting me know others are in the same boat.
Dianne
