ALL EXPERIENCED FOAL WATCHERS...I am just wondering if any of you had noticed your mares becoming suddenly a bit ribby prior to foaling? and if so how long approx before?

My mare over night has become ribby (promminant ribs) when i grromed her yesterday she was as round as can be, no ribs to be seen or felt, theni went out this am to brush off her mud, and the brush thudded across her ribs towards the back flank area almost up to the spine. feels nasty! should i increase her grain or is this normal?
her tail is getting really goofy too! when i brush her it stands straight up, pretty funny (this i do rememeber she has done with previous pregnancies)
she lays her ears back and stretches her neck straight out often...is this also a sign of being close, or just uncomfortable?

Did the baby drop and give her belly the "v" like shape to it? With my oldest mare (she is currently 290 days along with her tenth baby) her ribs become prominant after the baby drops. For this mare in particular, it happens around two to three weeks before she has the foal.
Hope this helps.

Kris I had heard the same and I could see Ladys back bone and top of her ribs abit before she had foaled. Sounds like you are moving closer !!!

My grey mare looks sunk in at the hip,and her croup is more pronounced, not ribby though. Her back is as wide as my couch though,LOL.She still has a couple weeks to go if she makes it,poor thing looks totally miserable, she moves so slowly.

mine was that way yesterday, her spine could not be found, now it is flat and her back upper ribs are easily felt, and if she was not so hairy you would see them too!
she has changed shape since yesterday, her tail head is very pronounced, she is caved in just in front of her hips, and her belly seems to have moved down and forward towards her chest. she is 328 days. mine moves a little easier today than she has in past. fairly uncoordinated yet!

Kris,
I definately think she looks like she's dropped!! I so excited for you!
By the way, I don't know what it is...but, I just love this mare. Just something about her, I don't know. I bet she's great. Can't wait to see what she has :-)

Kris,
Also...and this may just be how the photo came out...but your mare looks "slab sided". Almost as if there is little difference between the hip-flank-belly....very flush and even. Willing to bet she's getting reved up, and that baby's getting ready to turn.
This could just be me wanting her to foal, but time will tell!

Heather (long post) I apologize for that pic...she was SO dirty, the last 2 days she is finding the wettest muddiest spots to roll! and i cant even brush all the dirt off! she is staying in her pen now, so she will stay clean, and because the other horses will not leave her alone! they want to sniff her and when she wont stand to let them they chase her around! she is much too big to be running on lumpy muddy partially frozen ground! Thanks for the compliments on her! most people like her, she appears so sweet (and when not pregnant and has a halter on she is VERY sweet!) she is a dream to ride, very well mannered, broke for ANYONE (she is my beginners horse) she is smooth to ride also! believe it or not an arab that glides, she actually has an extra gate, (fronts trot, hinds canter) just before a canter...ultra smooth...and she is a reg. purebred arab! and she is level headed NOT flighty!
I actually have her daughter that is the same way but isnt as socially friendly with others as Tsahahrah is.
Even the stallion owner loved her, and she is a QH person though and through. The stallion did too, he actually would not breed standing heat mares if mine was on the property, he was too fixed on her...even when she was not in heat, so we had to do the walk on service! :-) (ok by me)
you know, she is not flat/slab sided as of last night, her belly was defineately wider than her hip flank area, but a lot flatter than it has been! real straight up and down, not too rounded. (im not sure if she could get totally flat sided...she is HUGE!!!!!!!!!
but still very little bag!!!
last night i was watching her baby roll around inside, it was wierd to watch, it was not just hte normal kick, thump bounce look, it was actually a rolling movement of the side of her belly!
I hope she waits till the weekend! it is way too cold right now! 23 degrees (F), this weekend is supposed to be 40+, much better, and next week maybe 50, so if she can hold off a bit tht would be good!
(although im getting anxious!)
I'll keep you posted! (trust me...i have nothing else to do while i wait...it too cold out to be working others...ground still frozen!)

Kris, she looks REALLY dropped to me. I would expect a baby in two weeks at the most, though she will probably go sooner.
Keep us posted.

Kris- she looks like she's hanging really low, I hope she holds off till it's warm AND she gets a good udder going. Were you able to get what you needed in case she doesn't?

EV-having a hard time locating frozen colostrum without closing, which i really cant do because it affects a lot of peoples jobs, adn i have closed a lot lately and will be closed for 3 weeks in july... sucks! im still looking though!
have you ever heard of foal response or rejuvenex? they are both bovine based colostrum but for horses. i typed in equine colostrum replacer on hte internet and i got a different one too but cant remember the name, i am wondering if they are any good. i have talked to 3 vets and animal hospitals, they direct me to each other but no one has any. (GRRRRR)
i did get a colostrum bank number though, im gonna try them! MAYBE they have some!
any baby???? or was it false AGAIN?!?!?!?!
best of luck to ya!
Joanna- thanks it is nice to know i am not seeing things...boy she has a lot of work to do in 2 weeks! she needs to become a milk factory and FAST!!!!

Kris,
Hope your mare is still doing well. Don't worry 'bout the dirt (I didn't see it). Like I said, I don't know what it is, but...there is something intrinsically "good" about your mare that comes across. I like her.
Isn't is absolutely NEAT to see those babies moving around in there. I think at this point in the gestation, they can't do much thumping, so do the 'rolling' action you see. I noticed the same thing with Grace. One minute the foal was on one side of her...then her body would morph and he'd be on the other side! So cool to put my hand on her and feel him roll around (not so sure she appreciated it...).
Do hope she waits for what you northern folks call "warmer" weather...since WHEN is the 40's WARM!!?? Then again, I'm a southern sissy who whimpers if it dips below 70 :-) . Sounds like she's got a little bit longer in the cooker, or she's playing you along...it would be typical now wouldn't it?

heather...nothing yet!
yeah, hopefully she cooks longer, so when it is "warm" it will be more coforting to know IF i miss it the poor baby wont totally freeze to the ground!!! but im thinking she IS going to try to pull a sneak attack! the funny thing is she can try to sneak, and she may think i am not watching, but sh does not realize i can see her from my bedroom window, so at night i just sit up in bed look out at her watch her for a few minutes and lay back down. during the day i watch her a lot, its like haveing a lifesize foal cam! i love it!
last night i got excited though, she was laying down and had been fo a while, i watched her for a while and i think she was strainging, she would rock back a little, her tail would lift and her but would lift up and get pointed, she did that for about 5 minutes, then i went out and talked to her, and she stood up and left aload...false alarm! 10 minutes later she layed downa gain, hubby and kids were getting home and saw this and had to tell me Tsahahrah's laying down and she is grunting and groaning!!! i said yeah she is probably trying to breathe! 8 minutes later she stood up and started eating hay...false alarm! she sure is piggy lately! eats a ton of hay and devours her feed! it used to take her hours to eat her feed, now its gone in 10 minutes! and she is begging for more (nicker nicker)
no real signifaicant bag change, just a bit firmer, no bigger. i am thinking hte cold may be affecting that too, the biggest she was it was also the warmest day we have had in ahwile
i know people from other areas think we are aierd when we celebrate it making it to 45 degrees! when it hits 60 were in shorts!!! for real! especially after 6 months below 32 degrees!
the movement of afoal is awesome! makes me think of when i was pregnant with the kids, i loved feeling it..it is so miraculous!!!!!!!!
thaks heather for your comfort and support!

Every day I check the messages (well every 5mins!!) and am waiting for that one where you tell us you have a lovely new foal - I hope it comes soon!! Hang in there, it cant be much longer...........can it???????

Kris- I'm in the same boat w/Avery, she just sitting on hold..I sure hope everything is ok, I need to get her out and mess with her so that I see the baby move some, then I'll feel better about it.. her udder is still about 80% full, and maybe a little more puffy over the last couple of days. (she has more now than Daisy had before she foaled) Sassy is still holding out too, she stands at night with her behind pushed up tight against the wall, like she's holding the baby in there..lol. Went to take baby photos last night and the camera had a dead battery..so you'll have to wait one more day to see Cisco the wonder colt and Drew (our new arrival)

Kris- I do think it has changed a little, that's a GOOD thing! maybe she's just going to go really long term with this foal.. maybe closer to the 365 length gestation? It seems there are several mares going long this year.. at least from what I'm reading it seems that way.

Kris- if she does, and she gets a full udder before it comes, that's better than having it soon and not having milk! Daisy's colt is keeping her sucked dry, she was getting cranky with him yesterday for being after her all the time to nurse. Those Listo babies sure seem to have good appetites! Sage is eating like crazy trying to keep up with Cisco's demands too. Apparently, she's doing a good job because he's looking FAT.

Ev - my mare is doing the wall thing too. I was watching the monitor last night and she had her rear pushed against the wall with all her weight shifted back. She was also stretching her neck and head up and curling her lip. Different behavior for her, but still no baby.

jennifer, based on the udder yes, that is what is so confusing, if you look at all other signs she looks ready now! (dropped, tail head, vulva, flank area, croup, back muscles have sank, ribs popped, etc.)
