I know there is a thread for this already, but I can not find it. I am now living through all of my friends foals as I wait and wait for mine. Here is the most recent, I would like everyone's opinion on what color he is and will be. The mare is a bay and the sire is unseen. She was purchased already bred to a Blue Roan. Any thoughts? Also, he seems really small to me. The mare is 14 hands and he is less than 36 inches - this is a guess based on when he was standing next to my leg. You will see he is a little fellow. His name is Magic's Toy Maker.

Kathee what a cutie!!! I have no idea what color he will be, but he sure does not look like he has any pigment around his eyes.
Tell your friend congrat's on her arrival!

I would say sorrel we had only last spring that had pink around the eyes like that but they turned brown later when he shed off his foal coat he was a dark sorrel or chesnut. He sure is a cute little guy.

Kathee- boy he is a unique color isnt he? he looks kind of creamy...? wierd, my two chestnut foals had darker eye lashes and skin around their eyes at birth, his is ral pale.
how old is he in this picture? mom is a ? dad is a ? he does "look" small in pics and a bit thin, (but if he is only a day or two old that would be why)
cute lil thing!

Good point Kris - he is one day old. Both parents are quarter horses - Bay and Blue Roan.

No exact breeding date, but they told her to expect an April foal. She was guaranteed a registerable foal from this Blue Roan stud that she never actualy saw. One of his Blue offspring was also in the auction and she was outbid on him. She bought her kind of on a wim. She felt a little sorry for her having been bred so early and was hoping foal a blue foal. I don't know enough about the blue color to even gander a guess at this guy. My only input was that he wasn't a bay! Not much help!

Hi guys!
That little one is too cute!! We need some of your mares to get down and HATCH durnit.

Far as I can see, the colt looks pretty good. Based on the mare being 14 hands, I'd say that his size is pretty standard. He will get big now that he's out. Do believe he's a sorrel fellow. What are they calling him?? Tell them we need more pics! What about your mare(s)?

Thanks - he is Magic's Toy Maker. As for my mare.....................nothing! That is why I am driving all over the county looking at everyone elses babies! I was actually jealous watching my friend playing with her new baby (waiting is bringing out my bad side). I have another friend right down the road with a mare that should foal soon. She hasn't slept in 5 days - poor gal, she is a high school girl and trying to keep up in school and watch her mare. I am looking forward to that one - big palmino bred to a golden line back dun. Should be pretty!

Hi Kathee!
Now, don't turn green...just go tackel your friends foals so you can get a jump start on foal wrestling practice :-) .
It is going to be interesting to see what the palomino x line back dun throws! Anybody care to guess on color combinations? Be sure and get pics ok?

Kathee, my prediction assuming a line back dun as in "zebra dun" black mane and tail with black points and markings?) i would guess dun, sorrel, bay, palomino, dunolino, or if by chance the stallion is really a buckskin dun "dunskin" (the dun stallion i bred to does carry the cream gene), possibly a cremello!
these are based on the little bit of studying i have done on color genetics, (im looking to get a dun, red dun, or palomino from my mare)
defineately need pics on that when its born!
tell yur neighbor girl hangin there! and were all waiting with her now! (and hopefully school work is not suffering from her lack of sleep!)

Kris - he is a true zebra dun with all the markings. She really wants a zebra dun baby which I also have a soft spot for. I am trying to patient...I am just not good at it. When it does arrive, I will probably drive the new foal and momma nuts. I took 48 pictures of my friend's foal. I am sure I will be completely out of control with mine - thank goodness for digital cameras!

no doubt, those spur of the moment pics you "got to have", that you look at and wonder why, well go ahead when your digital...just delete when you realize i can fd without it! i love mine!!!
i hope she gets her zebra dun!!! my filly i currently own is a buttermilk buckskin dun roan
(yes thats a mouthful!) when i look on her papers, about 40% of the time palomino, 40% dun, 20% sorrel . so odds should be decent in her favor!
so did you breed foa dun too?

Kathee- that colt could totally surprise you, I've seen babies that color shed off black. If his sire was a true blue roan, he could have passed the black gene on but not the roan. He could be a sorrel, but give him a little time and you might be surprised what color he turns out to be. good luck, he's a cutie,

Ev

Kris -this breading is for a black tobiano (fingers crossed) but it will definately be black. There is a nice zebra dun stud in the area, but he is a little small for my taste. He is 14 hh and I am tall. I prefer at least 15hh.

It's a Girl!! Jan called it!!

Well, I had a story typed, but my computer ate it... So short version:
Baby came at 8:50 pm, Serina delivered standing up, I caught baby but cord only stayed connected for about 30 seconds. Everything seems ok though, Serina passed placenta in about 1.5 hrs, no missing pieces. Baby is very active, first buck was at midnight and mom is chasing her all over the stall as she runs laps. Baby is tall! I'm shocked as she baked way long (366 days) and mom and dad are short. She had trouble getting down low enough to find the milk. Anyhow, I'm exausted (spelling dosn't count tonight, I can't concentrate!), but here are a few pics and thanks to everyone for the support and all the information everyone has shared here has helped sooo much, this was definatly the best resourse to get Serina and I (and baby) this far!

http://photobucket.com/albums/e184/murrini/Serina/

Disregard the disaster of a stall, Foaling kit got thrashed and spread about stall... I'm horribly embarassed. Apparently Serina is a mess as well, it was a lot darker in there, the flash lit it up a lot. Aargh! Anyhow, More pics tomorrow in the daylight. Baby looks to be Bay but has a ton of white in her tail. Is that normal for a Bay baby (Pure arab, Dad is black)?

Please let me know if anyone would like a somewhat play by play of significant events leading up to delivery. I can put it together tomorrow if it would help anyone.

Robin- CONGRATS TO YOU!!!!!!!
she is absolutely adorable! look at that sweet face! (gotta love arab babies)
all went well other than a fly by delivery?
Serina is a good mom?
baby is active and eating well! all body functions working on mom and baby?
aweome!
she looks defineately bay(white in tail is normal for the ones i have seen) may gray though.

well have fun and enjoy your new bundle!!!

Congrats Robin! She is beautiful (well worth the wait I bet)... Wow - 366 days and 58 hour shifts - don't know how you did it but WAY TO GO!!!
Jan H - Maybe you can predict mine :-) We are at day 351 with our Maiden Mare. She has had a full and very sensitive udder for a week. Noticed some edema (which also seems sensitive) on Friday. I've noticed her vulva "popping" (seems like the pressure is pushing the inside out - kinda pulsating) off and on all weekend. Two nights ago she laid flat out, head down and four legs extended and was breathing hard - no pushing. Then she got up slowly, paced, bit at her side for about 15 minutes then started munching on her hay and everything stopped. Last night she was pacing A LOT, biting at her sides, lifting her tail, passing a lot of gas, and walking on her fetlocks. She looked like she wanted to lay down but didn't. Her tummy is really pointed in the bottom and this morning she didn't eat her grain (just picked the apples and carrots out). She did however, eat her hay. A prediction would be nice because I'm getting so tired, I feel like its never going to happen:-)

I can try to predict a filly or a colt by a picture taken at 9 or 10 months along, but I can not predict when she will foal, maidens are drama queens and they just do not know what is going on with their bodies so they over react to everything. by being dropped in the belly and V'd I would say your not too far away from foaling, but when? if I could do that i would be rich!!!! Do you have a side and front view of your mare at 10 months that you could post?

Robin- congrats on your filly, she's a beauty!

Jan,Kris & Kim, we had a colt born at 2:30 this morning, Daisy finally let loose and did her thing. The birth was pretty uneventful (with the exception of her laying with her behind right in the corner) He's a solid bay, not as pretty as Cisco in my opinion..lol, but still a nice colt. I'll have photos to share tomorrow, I was just TOO tired to even worry with those last night! I think Avery and Sassy are not far off, we may just sleep in the barn tonight.

Jan & Kris- it's your turn now!

Kris- Daisy was 340 days from her first cover, and believe me, you'll croak when you see how Cisco looks now.. he's incredible. ( IMHO ) Hope your mare waits a little while longer if it's nasty up there. We had snow last night, (figures, 70 degree days and they wait till the weather is crappy)
Kim- we have a nice heated room in the barn complete with a mini kitchen, we'll take our cots and a t.v. with vcr, it won't be too painful AND we can see Sassy's stall from the door..lol. (if Ave is looking close, I'll actually have to step outside the door to see her, LOL.

Since I totaly forgot to post pictures of last weeks baby, its about time to put one up.
This precious colt was born monday a week ago. He still is very crooked in his legs, so we now keep him and mom in a stall to see if that will help.

we are now anxiously waiting for the last baby of this season. I am guessing at least another week or 2. There is picture of that mare on my photobucket page. Feel free to tell me what y'all think. I dont have an exact breeding date, so I am still guessing.

awww. Alex, he's a cutie. I don't know if you'd want to try it, but I've been told that "Foal Aid" paste will really help when they have crooked legs. It's really just a jumbo vitamin I think, but Cisco's legs are still a little off so I'm going to give it a try. It's not too expensive if you decide to see if it will help your little guy. Good luck, Ev.

Alex - so cute! I love those crooked stripes!

Ev - Congratulations!!! Are you as tired as I am??? It's sooo much fun though! I look forward to the pics!

More pics of Serina's baby at the end, & Lets see if I can answer all of the questions -

Kris - Delivery was fine, very quick about 10 mins from water breaking to baby on the ground (in my arms?? whatever...)Serina was great! Baby had first poops within 3 hours, Serina didn't poop until this afternoon but was spunky and didn't seem too sore today so I wasn't too concerned, she had a lot of gas. She felt good enough to run around with baby some late thes afternoon too! Baby is a pistol, she did not want to lay down and nap at all, finally wore herself out and had too. Still nose dives to the ground, it's soo cute! Can't find any white hairs around her eyes, if she is going to grey I think it will be a slow process. What is wierd is she has a black spot at the hoof on each white sock. Enough to put a black stripe on the hoof wall. She is pure Arab, could that be a Sabino expression? Serina has some Sabino producers in her lines.

Joanna - No name yet, I'm thinking something about Spring or Equinox in arabic (she was born on the first day of spring and the equinox) Just have to find some tranlations... I can't register the baby so just need a barn name. She streamed & dripped off and on for approx 17 hrs. I started timing her times of discomfort (like timing contractions with women) about 6 hrs before she was restless (yawning, biting sides, stretching...) about every hour, at 3 hrs before she was restless about every 20 mins. I fed her at about 2 hrs before and she ate all of her food but was very restless the whole time she was eating, and water broke about 20 mins after she finished eating.
More pics!!

Kathee - This colt more than likely will go grey because he was born such a pure black and his dam is grey. None the less he is gorgeous and now its my mares turns we are at 346 and 347 -- both bay mares are in foal to my black stud. Well... time will tell.

Well - always a bridesmaid and never a bride! Here is a picture of my other friend's foal born this AM. He is out of a Palamino mare and a red Dun. As you can tell, he has all of the dun markings - dorsal stripe, zebra stripes and wither cross! I had a long talk with my mare today....and I am having to go to extreme measure...tonight, she is having pizza and I am making her walk barefooted (hooved) on a cold kitchen floor! That's what my gramma's generation told me to do when I was pregnant!

Kathee- he's adorable, and what a beautiful color. Don't be sad, you'll get to be a bride very soon..lol. ( I'm still waiting here too on at least a couple mares, heck, at this rate the next batch that are due will start foaling before these two give up and have theirs ) We spent 6 hours sleeping in the barn last night thinking we had one on the way.. at 6 this morning, she's just standing around..
Kris- nothing there yet either I take it?

I tried to find some FoalAid, but nobody around here carries it. They had something called Foal Lac. Anyone ever heard of that and is it similar to Foal Aid ??

Ev-nope nothing! no change in udder either. i posted a question for you underhte thread with renaes new pics.

Alex, if I am not mistaken foal aid is a "Buckeye" product, this was taken off their site( Foal Aide Paste®
A vitamin and trace mineral supplement to be given to foals from one to three months of age.)
www.buckeyenutrition.com/equine/
that is the site i found it on.
at the top of the page is a "dealer locater button" click on that to locate a dealer near you.

thank you Kris. Unfortunately there is no dealer near by. I am going to call my vet and find out if he has any ideas. Its hard, because this foal doesnt belong to me. If it was mine I wouldnt have waited that long. I would have taken him to the vet the day after he was born. All I can do for him now is give him stall rest and lots of TLC

Alex- what are the legs doing or what is wrong? tendon contraction, knuckled under, crooked, (out or in)?
i had one with contracted tendons at birth, she was casted for 3 days took care of it perfectly! the earlier the help the better! i would encourage teh owner to get on the move and get the baby some med attention ot it will be a worthless horse later in life! legs are a prety important part of a horse! IMHO anyway!

His right front is extremely turned in at the knee and jittery (weak). His rear end from hip to pasterns was sort of "s" shaped right after he was born. that has straightend out to some extend but he still seems off when he walks. He runs, bucks and rears like all the other babies, but isnt quite as coordinated.
I totaly agree with you that this needs attention ASAP. I suggested to the owners to take him to the vet the day after he was born, but they wanted to see if it works itself out first.

Alex- is he what they call "windswept" in the back? my colt is a little in at the knee on the one leg, the foal aid is supposed to help with that type thing. I'm not sure I completely believe it will do the trick, but it seems harmless enough so I'll try it, the cost isn't excessive so it's worth a shot.

Jan- I cannot believe that mare of yours is still holding out, incredible. Sassy did NOT foal last night, (2nd and LAST night in the barn for me whether she does it today or not) When I left this morning she had a good 1/4 inch of wax on each teat, her udder is full to bursting and at times last night she was leaking milk out the one side.. STILL NO BABY.
Danielle- congrats! he's a long legged fella! very pretty!

Congrats on everybody's foals! E, Kathee, Kris - any luck yet? Sorry it's taken me so long to post new pics of my girls. You guys know that Baby Doll foaled 3-15. We had another mare due to foal in a month or so, and she went 3-22. Lol, between those two, I haven't had time to get near my computer. I hate it, because I'm behind on everybody's stories. I takes days to get caught up around here!

Jan, any news? I've been thinking about you. My husband thinks that you're God (lol) and wants me to employ you for predicting next years foals!

Here are some pics from last Saturday. Mom and baby finally got to go HOME! You guys, these foals crack me up. They are definately not graceful. Mom is very protective, but getting better. Some guesses on color would be great. We have no idea how we got this or what she'll shed out as.

I don't have any pics of our latest baby. I'll get som today hopefully. Mom is a grey, though, and the baby's a bay. She looks like she'll shed out grey. It's so funny because we have a sorrel mom w/ a grey baby and a grey mom w/ a bay baby. Lol, they look like they swapt! Anyway, let me know what you guys think, and I'm off to try to play catch up!

Amber, it is so hard to tell by pics, but i would guess if there is a dun parent involved a grulla, otherwise i would say this baby will shed out and be black!
Kathee, isnt your mare about the same as mine? (333 days today)
mine isnt pressing her butt, but if if rub or brush it she presses against me.
mine still has not developed much of an udder(much like most pics on here of mares at 299 days)
but she looks ready otherwise. belly even lower, and tissue inside vulva is darker red (watermelon color sinstead of bubblegum) and lots of veins...(looks like a bloodshot eye with all the veins.)
so i expect we are closer...but not yet....teh weather IS nicer though! we might make 50 by thursday! and nights above freezing! that would be good, bettr to foal in that weather than 20 days and 5 nights!

I went looking on the net for some grulla color info pages and found pictures that you can reference. Hope this helps

Hi amber - Hes soo cute- I love the picture of him laying down, hes a lovely colour. My friend bought a chestnut horse from a dealer having no idea she was 10mths in foal - We'd been riding, jumping, everything. When she finally found out there wasnt long to go and we turned up one morning and there were two! The baby was VERY similar in colour to your foal and she shed out completely black. Watch around the eyes for the dark patches.

Danielle. Hes great too - I have my chestnut mare bred to what I think might be a homozygous bay/agouti stallion. I was hoping to get something other than chestnut - But having seen some of your foals here, I cant wait to get a surprise - And I couldnt care less if its chestnut. They are all so cute arent they! : )

hello ladies, just dropped in to work for a bit and wanted to post that Sassy FINALLY had her colt. After dripping milk for 2 days, she gave up and had a bay colt at about 6:30 last night. Avery is making some dramatic changes now so I expect it to be another exhausting night.. I will NEVER breed mares this closely again..lol. Peppy is not far off either and may actually BEAT Avery to the delivery room. Photos in the morning! Ev. PS the mare I sold and shipped to HI last summer also foaled yesterday, she too had a colt, red roan.. it's a year for boys it seems!

Sorry gals, I posted on the other thread but I'll repeat, I put the photos on disc and apparently brought the blank disc in instead. (exhaustion) No rest for the wicked, I was awake a good part of the night watching monitors. Oh,forgot to mention the yearling "Ben" did a tour of the barn while we sort of slept last night. (that accounts for the numerous banging noises that I failed to go check on..lol) From the looks of the barn this morning, I'd say he had a high time visiting all the stalls before Charles put him in at 3 a.m.! It's a good thing I LIKE horses..

Heather-thanks so much for the site. Naturallly, it would be wonderful is she turned out to be a grulla as we know that this is a very hard color to get, but I'm loving her regardless. lol, she's a biter, though.

Raven-thanks so much for the comments! How's your little one doing?

Your filly is a nice looking gal. I hope my paint foal looks as good. My mare is due in April. Jan you guess a filly on her, I hope you are right, last year she had a bay and white colt. What color was the stud again that you breed this mare to? The filly turned out nice. I am glad foal and mom are good, we have been thinking of you.Thank care,

PHOTOS at last! These are not the greatest, but they at least will let you see what our little guys look like. Still no babies from Avery or Peppy.. Ave spent most of the night laying down in her stall..a couple of times, I really thought she was getting down to business.. but nope..she's still holding out. I guess that foal will get here eventually! Ev.

I'm very proud of Cisco too, he's actually heads and tails above the other colts (in my opinion) The photos don't really do him justice, it's hard to get a good picture as he won't stay till or keep out of my face when I have the camera! Drew is his 1/2 brother, he may well fill out a lot more in the next week or so, he's certainly got the shoulder bones to be big like Cisco is, poor Pedro is just a little bay colt, average I'm afraid..but we'll give him a chance before we pass judgement on him.

Dianne,
I love you paint stud colt. Is he a palomino and white? What color was the stud? I would like a palomino and white foal, but I think this year it will be a bay and white. My mare is homozygous for the tobiano gene, she is due in April.
Amber, your is a cutie as well.
I like everyone foals this year.
take care,
Melissa

Melissa, the stud is my sorrel Tovero on my photobucket, guess he got the dilute gene from his mom. His dad has sired sorrel/white, black/white, and what they say is brown/white this year (waiting for a pic from them, will post when I get it). He is just what my son wanted, I am so happy for him. We are all so lucky to have all these beautiful, healthy babies.

Well thank you so much, this is the loudest filly my stallion has ever produced from this mare, normally they have little to no white at all, and to date All have been grey. With my stallion you could bet the farm that his foals will be grey.I kind of figure hands down this little gal will make the grey list,LOL,but that is ok if she is anything like her siblings she will be gorgeous and quite tall, her sister from 2002 was 15 hands at 18 months and still growing.Mom is a scant 14 hds and dad is 15 hds barefoot.

Lori- thanks, they bays are looking better now that they are filling out. I'm amazed at how little "Pedro" is putting on the pounds. He doesn't even look like the same baby I took those pictures of on Sunday. I'll take more in a week or so and post for everyone to see. Hopefully by then, we'll have a couple more on the ground to share as well!
