After showing all the tell tale signs of imiment labor (Last night her vulva extended and drooped an additional 4 inches (began elogating around day 326, now at day 332). Leaking milk for two days (stored about 6 oz in freezer), still comfortable, but more aware of her surroundings. A few days prior she seemed to be in a bit of a fog (eating very well, yet resting with a glazed far off stare). Last night she was circling her stall a bit and slightly less interested in her hay. After a 1 1/2 hr. power nap (me), I checked on her at 5:30a.m. and her vulva shrunk (a bit)and she's still eating contentedly. I really hope she's one of the few that will pop out a foal while devouring dinner. So, she's truly shown every textbook sign of being ready but still no foal. How often are broodmares lucky enough to hardly have their schedules interupted just before foaling? |

Joanne, most of my mares foal without a "interuption" in their schedule. I have never had a mare go into the sweats like many have talked about here. The most I had was last year I did have a mare go off feed - in the previous 10 babies she wasn't affected in such a way. Other than the typical milk leaking/some developing a strong wax and I just go by each mare and the past experience with them, not set in stone for all the same way. They like to keep us on the edges of our seats! We always start our watch earlier then their past birthing just to be on the safe side of things, but we always seem to be more tired at the end then the new mom. And boy If I were able to pop those babies out like a mare I would have avoided two c sections out of three babies! |

My Stella that foaled the other night never has any interuptions in her schedule if it can be helped. On Friday I fed her 4th meal@9:00pm and nothing was amiss. Soon after she finished she began to paw the ground for a bit, then stopped, then started again. 11:15 we had baby. As soon as that was all over she was up looking in the feed pot as if to say, right need a bit more food please. Also she didn't really break a sweat at all. Terri |

Lady never broke a sweat before she had Chu kash. The only thing she did was alot of steam coming off of her but she was not wet at all. That was just minutes before. |

Skeetles broke her routine big time! usually my mare is a vaccum for food but two days before she foaled she wouldn't touch her grain and only nibbled hay. she was also very uncomfortable and wouldn't stand still for very long. she also broke out into a sweat during stage 1 labor. i was lucky because i believe my mare read the textbook! |

Baby Doll never broke a sweat either. She ate her grain that a.m., but not her hay. |
