What is the earliest a foal can be born and be healthy? My mare is due April 19th, but her last foal was a full month early and was lost. Am very excited and worried. THank You!
Full grown horses need to carry at least 300 days and preferable at least 320. The range is 320 to 370. The thing with horses is that they stay in until they are done. A foal born at 320 days and a foal born at 370 days are not premature or late. It just depends on the foal's gestation development speed. As I understand, a foal will not survive under 300 days, but a foal that is born at 320 days or over can still have problems and not survive. In fact, it can be considered "premature" over 320 if it is not finished developing. I know this is confusing, but they just don't compare to humans and other animals in this area.
