Hang in there Raven!
It will be so exciting!
Pre-cam days, I slept in the barn on a cot and I swear, all 3 mares (including the imminentely pregnant one of which I was right outside her door) took turns at laying down, rustling and getting up again. It was a conspiracy! I went in the house around 4, cleaned up, went back and there was baby ...being born, just the back hocks'n'hooves to be expelled. And she was Exquisite (her barn name is Quizzie!)
Yours will be wonderful too!

AAAAHHHH thats over with!
Now the real fun begins!

I had a long message but I was cut off line.
I'll try to remember it..... damn brain freeze.

I would just like to say THANK YOU to all who have supported me through this adventure. It was greatly appreciated and fun.
You gals all crack me up with your come backs. I must say though it was well worth the 29 yrs of waiting for a foal. Now I have another stud breeding coming to me.....HUM.. do I or don't I??
Kathee I cannot beleive you made your family come back home to see what has happened. It has warmed my heart to know there are people out there like you gals.

Well let get to the details of what happened:
Auntie Mo came over with KFC and we just sat down infront of the tv to watch Lady. It was hard to see her because the cam was in a transsition from day vision to night vision( the barn had both light spots and dark) so the screen was very blurred. Lady must have known this cause she waited till we could see no more and decided to lay down. All's we could do was listen to her grunting and breath as we are fighting off the cats for supper. Finished supper and went out. She was down and within minutes her water broke. Meantime I had ran back into the house to message everyone and I hear Mo in the barn yelling for me. So I answered her back.....duh... she cannot hear me! I race back out there and her water had just broke. Within minutes two front feet appeared and then she had a hard time with getting them to come out farther. Get up and reposition herself quite a few times this took 20 minutes. Finally, Mo could not take it any longer andthrow her jacket over the devider and jumped on in. We both grabbed a leg and pulled when we needed to and woosh out came the foal. Broke the bag and let him see the world! At this point I did not feel any back pain! Lady passed the placenta with in 5 minutes of birth. Everything looked good. The little guy came out with his tounge out looking ofr food. With his first little nicker to greet the barn, the rest greeted him back. It was soooo cute!
Mom's doing good great mom. Me,tired, exhausted I'll feel all of this tommorrow. Sleep, well I'll be too busy watching the cam now and all of his antics to do anything else!

This nameless wonder needs a name. Put your heads together and help me find a name for him.
Dam: Caraways Cash n Lady
Sire: Strike n Cash

Go for it gals!!

Raven,
Well done to you and mom! I'm so happy you'll be able to get some sleep now. Baby and mom look great! Now that you have the camera up you won't be able to stop watching your new foal. I had my mare and foal cam on for weeks last year. Hubby finally had to remove it when I was out. No luck this year as I will need it for other mares.
Good Luck and thanks for keeping us awake and entertained. My mare will be going tonight or tomorrow night judging by her signs and I wish she would hurry up!

Congrats on the colt. What a nice mare, I love her papers also. I bet she would cross great on my Easy Jet son. What are your hopes for this baby later in life? Any barrel racing? That is what I do and breed for.Now get yourself some well deserved sleep and keep the pics coming as he grows.

Thank you all for the compliments!

Terri good luck with your up and coming bundle of joy!

Brandie F- The stud is the one in the picture album. His pedigree is very similar to hers. He is also bred on the Cash and Balance/Dash for Cash lines. Both sire and dam are used for barrels. Me I just have them, I have riden before a bit of dressage but mainly just for my own personal pleasure. I really was hopeing on a filly which I would have kept in a heartbeat. A colt on the other hand it will depend, if I keep him or not. I still have another breeding to a paint with Jetalito line (I think that is how it is spelt). I only have enough space to have one extra horse and I would like a filly real bad. Just partial to fillys.

Any names come to mind???

I'll try and have some full body shots today for everyone.
Good luck to all of you who are still waiting on your foal!

Raven, good looking mare/colt and a nice pedigree to boot! My colt is out of the Jetalito line. Awesome line of horse. I had a chance to see Scenic Jetalito(apha)several years ago. Pretty cool fello-don't know if he is still alive or not. It was about 15 years ago I saw him.

congrats again, and best of luck with the colt--I'd sure do it again and take the breeding.
Nice set of photos for someone to see how things happen.

Good morning all!

Yesterday when Ladys other owner showed up he was amazed at how big this foal was. The color of him and the chest on him.
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e107/rav123en/Weeonemarch42006.jpg
He said that is the best looking foal she has thrown. Very health looking, thick coat. He was really amazed.
I have decided to breed her back to the other stud. His name is Tucker aka "Canadian Ice" he is a red roan overo. But actually I think he might be more a medicine hat? Here is a few pics of Tucker:
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e107/rav123en/Tuckershead2.jpg
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e107/rav123en/Tucker006.jpg
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e107/rav123en/Tucker001.jpg
You can find him pedigree at http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/canadian+ice

Now I know why you all keep having the foals and putting yourselves through this year after year.
It is AWESOME!!!
The little guy got his first brushing yesterday. Did not mind at all.
Thank you gals for some name choices. There is a few that I like in there. Now I just have to come up with a barn name. I'm going to get some more pics of him playing in the arena today.
Later..

Raven,
ya, the other stallion would be considered a medicine hat, but that too is also lumped under the overo paint. The stallion you will breed to also should carry the sabino gene which is a pretty power pattern and will alot of times produce your paint baby. Jetalito line has produced many winners as well. Nice choice!

Kim K the stallion has produced some colorful babys before and nice size and structure as well. If I'm not mistaken he has only produced a few solids. And it is only every few years that he does.

Thats what I would expect! There is a article in at the APHA site that has alot of infomation and the Jetalito breeding is in the article alot. If I get a chance I will go back and find it. It has info on the sabino gene and the jetelito line.

The names I have like and they keep coming back to me is either:
Double yur Cash
Double ur Cash Back
Waiting for Cash Back

I have asked Jan if she would be able to come up with a Indian name and have it blessed by the elders for his barn name. If not Phoenix hits me as well for a barn name.

Kim K - Thanks, if you can find that info about the Jetalito lines that would be wonderful.

Yesterday in the arena wee one found that he has bucking legs! He's running around trying to buck and rear. Must be one of the most precious things to see (you pro's know what I mean). He went tearing off from mom stopped at the side wall and mom came up behind him. He turned, lost his balance and sat down on his ass, so gracefully, then rolled to a laying down position. Looked up a mom as to say "what did you do that for!". We all laughed.
Tried his halter on last night, was not too sure of that. I have been able to brush him again kind of likes that.

Raven he is so cute. I love to watch them feel out their legs. Soon you wil be addicted as much as I am. with 6 mares to foal out.

I started just like you, with just one mare to ride that was bred when I bought her. 6 months later I was hooked, and started purchasing more and more mares that had what I wanted for breeding. I love it, it is the most exciting time of year to me.

We bred one of our mares last week, and today we are possibly breeding another one of our mares. and then the long wait sets in.............................................................................. ................................................................................ ...........................................................lol

Hi gals,

If you have not seem Jan has granted my foal a name of " Chu kash" in Choctaw meaning "spirit". It is very fitting for him. I do beleive any name for an animal should fit them and it sure does! I would like to give my deepest thanks to Jan for this great honour. I wanted to give him his registered name as "Double yur Cash" but I think it would be more fitting and sounds very much like it if, his name is "Double Chu kash"

We have a WINNER!!

The honor was the elders of the choctaw tribe here, and it was an honor that the name they offered was accepted. Thank you raven. oh BTW, in our culture, ravens/crows/blackbirds are the symbols of the ancestors in the afterlife, very honorable name. :-)

Chu kash wears his name with pride and gratitude
In one of my previous lifes, the one I remember most is that I was an indian in the south I'm just not sure with what tribe. I beleive that is why I am so connected to the Indians and there heritage/culture it brings me home and contentment. My very first horse was my horse back when I was an Indian and now she is one of my spirit guides. For the last month of this foaling she had been around alot. That is why I chose to have an Indian name for this foal. I had the cd of spirit drums playing all morning before Chu kash was born. Amazing!!

Hay Lori,
The dark area down his back is pretty typical. My colt has a thick black one! A true dorsal strip is even more prominent. I'm still putting money on him going grey...simply because it is a dominent gene...and it's the color you want (fingers are crossed tight).

Heather,
Thanks for clarifying that. I did not know if all foals are born with that strip or just all duns.
Cross those fingers tighly and I hope you have lots of money because I really would like any other color than bay, as you can tell. BUT I would not change the world for Chu kash. But I can still hope for a color change, can't I????

Raven, that stripe appears to be a countershading stripe which is opten mistaken for a dorsal...it is actually a camoflage(sp?), he may keep it ir it may go away, i have a 10 yr old chestnut mare who kept hers. I think in hte photos i detected a bit of grey around his eyes and muzzle...am i correct?
oh and happy bday chu kash!

Chu kash send his thanks for the well wishes.

Kris- there are times when I think there is grey there but other times I think not. Now Ladys owner was in today and looking at Chu kash again and he commented on his muzzle changing. Two foals before him was born a chestnut and turned at a yearling into a steel grey with black mane and tail. There still is hope for my darling yet!!
Your mare that you talked about was she registered as a dun ??? or just normal?
The owner had brought with him a person that has a half brother to Chu kash and they could not get over the size of him and build. I guess I am doing something right. :-)
I have a picture of another half brother at 6 mth

Raven, my mare is full arab and dun is not an arabian color. She has no stripes in her legs either, and from my understanding that is a must to be a dun. she was out of the mare that is pregnant right(chestnut) now and from a rose grey sire. to be a dun there has to be a dun or grulla parent(red dun, yellow/zebra dun, grulla/grullo/, dunolino.)
i wouldnt doubt if he will shed out greyer!!! my opinion!!! :-)

Was it on caring for the mare and foal??
http://www.suite101.com/course.cfm/18594/seminar
if it was this one click on the lessons onthe right hand side and print off each lesson.

Kris- Chu kash painting's will be on Ebay in a month

Chu kash has found out he has a tongue. With this tongue, if he sticks it out to the side he can run faster and it helps him find diferent things to get into. Here is a picture of him and his tongue out ( but he was not very photogenic today and was embaressed, had a hard time to get it) you have to look closely at him mouth sorry.

Kris the original site was under "OKAY....when is this foal coming!!!! AAAAUUUUGGGGHHHH!!!"
I really wish I had another foal due so I could continue the saga. I miss posting about all the changes. I never took her respiration during the process. It was just by watching her that I knew. Watch if she is flaring her nostrals at all(like after she has ran for awhile). I know somewhere I read about their respiration and other signs. I'll try and find it and post it when I do.

Try this site I found it helpful as well:

http://www.justamere.com/newsletter/predict.asp

Sorry I have been searching everythign I kept on foaling and pregnancy but do you think I can find it. It must have been one of those when you are looking at it then you can link on to something else and another link from there and duh I'll remember where it is instead of bookmarking it. Boy terrrible when we rely on our brains when they are somewhere else!

lori, you can measure his front leg from the middle of the knee to the coronet band and however many inches it is that should be close to the hands high when grown. example 14 3/4 inches=14.3 hands we have done this on all our foals but the only we have kept was thorn his legs as a foal measured 15 1/4 inches and I thought this was crazy because he was only 14.2 as a 4 yr old but at 5 yrs old we put him up for sale and the only lady that called needed a 14.2 horse for pony classes and i told her he was but she asked if i would measure him to be sure and low and behold he had grown 3 inches in a year so i guess it does work i just wish we knew about the other foals because we had one of thorn's that measured 16 1/2 it would be neat to know if he did get that big. Plus it is fun to see if it works. Windy

Windy thanks for the info. I'll have to try that today and let you all know what i get. Looking at Chu kash last night it seems his legs are as long as Ladys right now. His elbow is where her elbow is. I was also comparing him to a 9 mth old Arab that came inot the barn a year ago. She could not even eat from the corner feed tub we had to lower it for her. Here he is eating from it already with no problems.

Guess that Miracle Grow is working
! For those of you that think it if a special kind of feed, no it is not just plain good old food, vitamins & minerals. :-)

Raven I have found that if the cannon bone on the foal is the same length as the mare the foal will more than likly be the same size as the mare. if it is longer, you can be guaranteed the foal will be taller then the mare. He is a handsome boy! Give Chu Kash a scratch from Auntie Jan :-)

Itried to measure his cannon bone but he was too full of it this morning. I was able to semi measure against my own leg and then measured that. It was 16 inches but that included his hoof. Like I said he was not in the mood today. His mood was to PLAY!!!!

Kris, no he does not lead yet....rotten bugger..he would rather move forward with my arm over his shoulders half hugging him than lead . Chu kash is 17 days today. Those pics were from yesterday. I still hope you are right about the color thing .

Heather, YA! he is your TYPICAL naughty boy. Had to pin him to the ground last night. Too full of himself!! He could use all the squeezin' that he can get! Plane ticket is on the way .

Kim W, I think he maybe a big boy when he finishes out but mom and dad are about 15.3 each. I was after a foundation style horse first but I have him and would change it now! There is only one of him .....thank god!

he'll catch on!...maybe !:-) i had a tomby filly 2 years ago that i bought at 3 months old that had never been hadled or imprinted...she was full of it...took a while but she settled down nicely, by 2 years 4 months old she was broke out and riding bareback with a halter by my 12 year old! so theres hope for him...lots of discipline and manners now though! (well enough to teach him right and wrong, he is only 17 days old!) keep working on the leading, he will catch on. do you use the lead attached to the halter then around the butt method?

My mare is 16hh and the stallion I bred her to is just 14.2hh. Her last foal made 15.3 and she was bred to a 16hh stallion - I am hoping for something smaller...Like you say - As long as its healthy, Im not too fussy.

Kris I'm not too worried just yet about it. He will lead a couple of steps if I am just holding on to his halter. He is not too sure of the lead attached to his halter, rope around bum just makes him step on my feet(need steel toe shoes for walking with him) :-) I cannot speak baddly about him at 17 days he will let me halter him with no problem, brush, pick up feet and touch all over his body, face, ears, and mouth. Even let me put my hand in his mouth with not a fuss. He knows what ah ah is, so we only have too parts left to workon leading and being caught. Once he is caught he is great. Just wants to play chase me! Have not found what he likes to make catching easier, that to will come. I think if others can do it so can he. Also not too bad for first time with foal handling for me I might say.

Found the weight?height tape today adn used it on Chu kash. Well at 18 days old 11h and 192-195lbs. Hummm may just end up being a BIG boy after all!!

Kris,
Not a chance in the world your going to miss it. No way.
Everyone told me this...said I'd fall asleep...or she'd have it when I was gone. I never left for crying out loud...started to wonder if these people really knew me??
I sat in front of a foaling monitor for 4 days/nights while my mare went in/out of stage I labor......and I didn't miss it. Everyone else left, went to bed (said it wasn't gonna happen...too early, etc). Then BAM she had him! Talk about an "I told you so!".
I can tell....you're not going to miss it...and I'd be willing to put money on it (not a lot...but some).

thanks raven and heather! i hope i do NOT miss it! the quicker i seehte color the quicker i decide if i will do it again!!! (anything but a chestnut/sorrel would be nice!!!)
funny how the non horse people dont understand our gut feelings!!!
Raven- WOW! he is big already!!!!! you will have a nice size boy i am certain!
i have a filly, she is 11 months old, she is just shy of 14 ands and weighs around 800 pounds!!!!! she came from qh mare who is fine built (15 h and about 1000 lbs) and a stallion who is thick (foundation bred) and stands 15.3 and about 1150 -1200 lbs!
i am thinking she will be closer to daddys size then moms!!! itis funny...you now how yearlings always have that "scrubby" yearling unproporioned look? not her, she looks and is proportioned like a horse....its wierd!
but she is getting the yearling nauties!!! she wants to be boss! (I dont THINK so!!!)
chu kash will be that way too, sounds like hes already there!!!

Hey Kris well I knew I was not to worried about Chu kash learning the lead thing. It only took a day and a half. Yesterday I left a lead on him all day long, last night he was able to lead around with it behind his bum. Today he also had the lead left on him then took him out and was walking all over the barn with a loose lead beside me. Hope, a quick learner!
Bet your 11 month old is going to be something when she matures. Boy do I ever love those foundation bred horses. I'll swap ya!! . Oh I know he is going to be that way but he is learning very quickly.
Hope your mare foals soon for you!

her vulva is getting pretty red inside, it used to be like bubble gum colored, now it is almost watermelon colored and very veiny. that was new today. still not too much bag, it is about a hand ful if i reach up adn get ahold of all the firm rounded area. ( i have large hands, bigger than a lot of mens) but doesnt look full! no milk to get out yet.
still waiting!
i hope mine looks as nice as chu kash!

Thank you Kris, still nothing with your mare????

Boy I was sure she would have had it by now witht he way she looked? You probably do not recall being 10 yrs ago how she was before she foaled? I'll cross my fingers and say a little foal prayer that she gives you your foal soon.

Thank you for the compliments on Chu kash. I was able tonight to clean all four feet out with out someone holding the lead. Then went back and oiled them. He is being a very good boy! So I'll keep him for now !

just for now? you mean you could part with that cute lil bugger?
no no baby...she sure is stubborn! ?)
she NEVER got this big with the last two, her bwlly never dropped like this, and her tail and hip area look about the same as they did with the second foal at the time of delivery! She looks more ready now than the last ones! i just dont get it! but she is only 333 days~from last breeding date.
have you tried to tie chu kash yet?

Sorry for the spelling, hard when you are eating popcorn and typing. I only have enough room for two horses for myself so some one will have to go eventually. But that is a year away a lot can happening that length of time . So next year about this same time Iwill be back on here with another soap for you gals. In the meantime I'll still be here learning all I can.

Kris, Kathee, Kim - Thanks for the comments!

No he really is not a bad bugger just a bum! Ya he does have that mischievious look but he does know what "no" means. And when you say it to him he will look back at you like " Who me, I'm not doing anything?.... Okay, Okay I'll be good!"
Yes, Kris this is my first ever. I do miss those play by play days. I have thought about play by play with Chu kash but not sure if all of you would like to hear about it. Since most of you all are more experienced at this than I (at least some of you are). Did not think anyone would want to hear about his progress in life as a foal. What really made a WORLD of a difference in him was when I left the lead on for two days to drag around. Even by the first night doing this, there was a change in him. I guess it is all because of the 2 yr old in the barn. I see what they have done and accompilished in those two years with her. Meaning NOT MUCH! it still takes two people to do anything with her. I just do not want Chu kash to grow up like that. So I am doing my darndest to get him use to it all with one person. I would reather have then independant than no brains. My opinion. For those of you who would like another play by play just let me know.

Kris...I am afraid my play by play would read like this:

Day 1 - No change today
Day 2 - No change today
Day 3 - No change today

I promise if possible, I will include everyone...if there was just something to report!

Raven or Lori ... which do you prefer? I would love the life cycle of a colt report. I don't know what to expect either.

Kathee, Raven is fine since most of you know me as that on this board. What I can do for you is a journal of him and send it to you by email? That way I am not taking up alot of space on the board with his adventures. If there is anyone else that would like it as well I can do the same. Since I am kind of going blindly into this, I do not mind shareing my experience as how well we are progressing.
You all have been very kind and supportive to Chu kash and myself. Kathee you still have a bit of a ways to go, do you not?

Kris, thought for sure by now you should of had this foal? What is she waiting for??

Kris I was told that when they are getting really close, you will notice the tail head/croup area fills back up. As Jan had said in one of the post that she can sometimes see the foal moving there. I was never able to on Lady. Could she just be waiting to drop her milk before she foals. As some articles state that it can happen just an hour or so before foaling.
But it is good that you were able to find some colostrum close by, if needed. I would think if your mare is fuller in front of her hips then the foal has definatley moved into position. This is why a lot of mares all of a sudden have a change in eating. They are able to eat more now that the foal is not taking up so much room and the mare can fill her belly. You probably have noticed she is eating more? Will do on the email I'll try and start tommorow night. I'll say a little foal prayer for you tonight. Did you have her u/s to make sure there was not two in there? If you did, you are going to have a full grown horse come out by the sounds of it!

she was US at about 18 days, appeared to be just 1! but obviously sometimes they are missed!
she is eating much more! she is actually eager to eat and finishes ALL of it at once instead of taking hours! that has been going on for about 2 weeks though!
she went out with the others today for an hour or two, she just stood by herself adn was ready to go back to her pen, so im thinking were getting even closer! (EVENTUALLY WE WILL BE SO CLOSE IT JUST HAPPENS!! :-) )
poop hte same, acting normal otherwise, calm, nit irritated (except when i try to look under her!)
i am hoping she will release milk at delivery if she does foal before it drops!!! maybe she is keeping it up inside to keep it warm since it is so cold out! hey good theory anyway!

Ahhh,I hope for everyones sake there is only one LARGE one in there! I know with Lady when she had the two false alarms was because she had been outside all day long with Hailey. I have never had a human baby but they will have a pregnant women walking the halls if the labor persists. There is something about walking, it relaxes the body to allow proper positioning. Even when I was breeding the dogs, the vet always stated to walk them if they are in preporation to birth. I had one dog that was way over due called the vet took her in he said it is right there but there was only one and with nothing behind it to push take her for a walk. I did this and on the way home she had the pup in the back of the vehicle. Other times when they get in the middle of whelping I have taken them outside for a walk when I know there is more in there but they are not moving. But when she is out keep an eye on her. Even if she is just standing there she will be more likely to walk around more than in her stall. All just a thought!
Your theory is good too!

Raven - I would like to see how your doing as you go along if you dont mind - Only I too, have no prior experience, so everything I can get my hands on is useful - Plus, Im just curious.... I like to see the little one and then the slightly bigger one and the slightly BIGGER one as he goes along and grows and learns.

Kim I would need your email. Or if it would be alright with the board or Jos? I could put it up on the bulletin board but I'm just not sure where. It is not really a reproduction disscussion. More a slightly off topic deal. If they okay it, I will put it on here instead.

Kris well ya she is huge! Like I said I hope there is one LARGE foal in there. As I know you already are, I too would be a bit worried. With all the signs there and not much of an udder, but it does seem like there is a slight change in the udders from last time. At this stage in the pregnancy would a vet be able to tell if there is one heartbeat or two? I wonder also if with a rectal he/she would be able to tell you if the foal is in the proper position? Just my thought it may give you a sence of what is happening.

So Jos can I put it up here and where??

trunk first! thats too funny!!! im really hoping for no trunk! and just 1!!!Raven, well we had a wakeful night last night, i checked on her every 2 hours! when she was out with the others she really did not seem to interested in being there, she was eager to be in, (rare for her) she pigged put on her grain but not real interested in her hay, i kept an eye on her all evening, but at around 9:30 she layed down, half way on her side, and kept lifting her head way up in the air and flexing her neck.(she did this repeatedly for about 20 minutes) (hard to describe, tried to paint the correct picture) then she got up and her tail was just going nuts! real fast tail flicking up and down, (almost funny), then for two hours every time i looked at her she was just standing in the same place with her tail flicking, then 2 hours after the first time whe layed down she layed down again, only did hte head.neck thinkga time or two but tail flicked while she was laying. then every other time i checked her she was standing in the same spot, tail flicking every couple seconds. now i know its getting close!
im truely scared! pray for just ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
well if anything goes on today ill start a soap thread of my own!

Kris, sounds like you are making some progress!
I have a couple of my mares that get so big, you keep wondering how much bigger can they get, and if they get any bigger, they won't fit through the stall doors! Several of my mares won't lay down the last couple of weeks. NEVER. So when we find then laying down in the stall, we know its time! It must be instinct that they don't lay down , knowing that they will have trouble getting up. ???

Good luck
Kim

I HEAR YA! IF SHE WERE IN A STANDARD STALL SHE MAY NOT FIT, SHE HAS A 6 FOOT GATE, ADN I SWEAR SHE JUST FITS! :-)
SHE HAS NOT LAYD DOWN THE PAST COUPLE DAYS TOO MUCH, THAT IS WHAT WAS SO WIERD ABOUT LAST NIGHT, AND NORMALLY WHEN SHE LAYS SHE LAYS UPRIGHT ON HER BELLY, LAST NIGHT SHE WAS HALF ROCKED TO HER SIDE. NEVER SEEN THAT POSITION BEFORE. I FOUND A FEW OTHER SPOTS OUTSIDE(IN THE HAY AND STRAW, MATTED DOWN, I JUST RE-FLUFFED IT YESTERDAY SO THEY ARE FRESH SPOTS) SHE LAYED TOO, SO SHE LAYED DOWN AND/OR ROLLED MORE THAN I SAW EVEN, AN THAT IS RAL RARE FOR HER. HER FAVORITE TIME TO LAY IS IN THE SUN, OTHERWISE SHE STANDS BECAUSE LIKE YOU SAID THEY HAVE A HARD TIME GETTING UP(SHE HAS A HARD TIME GOING DOWN TOO) MUST BE INSTINCT.
THANKS FOR THE LUCK KIM k!

Kris- if it's any help, Sassy didn't lay down at all the last two days before she foaled. Maybe your mare is getting really close. Have you ever had to pull a foal before ? if that baby is really big, you may need to be prepared to give her a hand getting it out. Sassy didn't have a very large foal, but she sure didn't seem to have much oomph when it came to pushing. Charles helped her a bit till the shoulders came through and then let her finish on her own. Shey layed around a lot afterwards, I'm thinking she's a wuss. Daisy's colt was MUCH larger and she had it on her own (no one dared get behind her..lol). I sure wish you and that mare the best of luck in the days ahead, maybe there's just a LOT of amniotic fluid in there and it's actually a normal sized foal! (and we've had that happen too, so I'll keep my fingers crossed for ya and for T !)

I HAVE MY BOOKS MARKED, AND 3 DIFFERENT VETS NUMBERS POSTED AND PLAN TO CALL AND INFORM MY VET IF I THINK I KNOW IT IS COMING! JUST IN NCASE! I HOPE A LOT OF AMNIOTIC FLUID! IM REALLY NOT WANTING TO PLAY RESCUE! (BUT WILL SHOULD I NEED TO!)
I AM PLANNING TO CHECK HER QUITE OFTEN AT NIGHT FROM THIS POINT ON!

Kris - the tail flicking thing sounds really good as a sign - the udder development is a real relief! It sounds like you are going to have a baby before me, also! I will try not to be jealous. Kathee-
tonight her vulva is real pushed out and swollen looking and mushy, i tried to look at the iside color and it is so soft i couldnt hardly look.(like taffy) that is a change from this am, it was still firm and long.
i saw baby moving along her tail head! too cool. she is CRABBY and tired, yawning, and blood shot eyes!
i braided and wrapped the top of her tail tonight. udder went down this afternoon and now fuller tonight. so ill be watching her tonight!

Good Luck Kris!
My mares vulva is really soft today. A little bit darker pink. She is pretty anxious and keeps walking around a lot. When i cleaned her stalls their were a few soft stools (almost like cows). Yesterday she was walking alot. Her Croup/butt is so soft and relaxed that when i press it it feels like theres nothing there...weird. Her vulva is also really relaxed and not tight at all. She is 323 days...maiden! Can't wait!

Elena - I am watching a maiden also which means neither she nor I have any idea what is going on!

Tonight when she leans up against the wall I am going to go out and have a look under her tail. I'm interested to see if it looks the same as during the day.

Kris sounds like some more very good progress! She will be having the foal soon enough! On Lady the day of foaling her muscles on either side of her vuvla were soft and ripply.I wish now that I would have taken more pictures of how she looked like the day of foaling.

Kathee, If I remember correctly you still have a bit of a wait but it is never too soon to keep watching for those signs! :-)

Im at 295 days today and with this being my first am as excited as I can afford to be without starving myself or driving everyone else crazy! i had no idea I would be such a wreck - and so early!!! Impatience is no longer the word to describe me : ) Thats why Im so eager to see yours Kris - because Ive been following your excitment for so long, I want to share in it - Im excited for you! Should I be seeing any changes in udder yet? I know they are all different, but generally speaking......

Good luck! Ill get the plasters out ready!! Or should I get the whole first aid kit just in case : )

Mine had a swelling inn front of her udders at about 7mths if my memory serves me correctly (which it very often doesnt!) - It was very early, she still has that lump (not lump, its squashy, like a small odema) but her udder is unchanged, fingers crossed she does not scare me like yours! I hope not to be still waiting after 340 days!!

Kris - her udders look really good now. I am glad you are seeing more progress.

Raven - My mare is actually even with Kris's...in days, not progress! We are at 335 days - I said I wasn't counting past 330, but I can't help myself.

This AM she gave me the tiniest little bit of change...two tiny translucent amber crystal at the end of her teat! Not wax or milk...but something new! I am actually glad she has taken pity on me and given me something. She must have seen I was begining to crack after of 3 weeks of no changes!

kATHEE- I STILL DONT HAVE THAT...
EV- THEY ARE ALL SO ADORABLE...SUCH SWEET FACES!
ABOUT THE TIME YOUR READY TO GIVE UP ON AVE SHELL WRAP YOU IN JUST LIKE DAISY DID!!! :-)
SHE IS OUT NAPPING IN THE SUNSHINE RIGHT NOW, JUST STANDIN THERE, EARS LAYED BACK, TAIL RAISING AND FLAGGING LIKE A WHITE TAIL DEER.
ITS PRETTY FUNNY, HER TAIL JUST DOES NOT LAY FLAT ANYMORE. WHEN I REBRAIDED IT LAST NIGHT I COULDNT HARDLY REACH IT BECAUSE IF I TOUCHED IT IT LIFTED, THE HARDER I PULLED IT DOWN TO BRAID ITTHE HIGHER IT WENT.
BABY IS RIGHT THERE...I CAN SEE IT MOVE...JUST NEED TO WAIT FOR THE DOOR TO OPEN NOW!

Kris- we won't have to wait TOO much longer. I just cannot wait to see Avery's foal, this is her first, so it may not be too big, but she actually has better size and confirmation than Sage does so the possibility of it being a REALLY nice foal is just killing me! I threatened to take her out for a jog, just to get something going.. but she's SO round, I just couldn't do it..<sigh> This is a TRUE test of patience.

Kris lots of good progress maybe with any luck she will have the foal by the weekend. I know I have said that before but now it may look like it as well. I'll call for sat and it will be an April fools baby! That maybe what she is waiting for to fool you!! :-)
Ev any other distruction that can happen to quicken the birth of Avery's foal! (wink wink)
Kathee sounds like you are not too far off of foaling either. They go from a amber honey color to a honey clear, then to clear whitish and finally a milky color.

Raven- she could definetely go on april 1st, that would work, that is day 340, then she would be perfectly "average" :-)
also sat would be about it, because i will not be home all dy, my 7 yr old son has a state wrestling tournament about 45 minutes to an hour away. I have not told her that! i would really like to make sure i am here, in case she gives birth to that elephant!!! i may need to pull it out by its trunk!
i will be going out to check here pretty quick...ill let you know of hte progress! last night before bed her udder was bigger...so well see what today brings...oh, tomarrow and friday and sunday it is supposed to be stormy...that would also be a good time to foal according to the foaling rules...right? (becsause today and sat are supposed to be mid 50's and sunny)

well no baby and no real big changes.
udder a tiny bit fuller, but teats still pointed inward. teats not full, cant get anything out yet. very firm udder (but she has been in all night) and ALOT of edema! in front of her udders all the way up to just behind her front legs! she wont even let me brush her stomache now. it took her a long time to eat her dinner yesterday. shes eating now pretty good. has not eaten a lot of hay. her poop is quite firm, so i gave her bran with her grain this am. hopefully she eats it.
well we continue to WAIT!!!!!!!

Kris- Avery is doing the same thing, she'll lay down at night and grunt and groan and be pushed out two inches in the back, you'll SWEAR you are going to see a foot any minute.. then she just gets up and she's done for a while. GRRR. Her foal was really kicking her this morning too. Peppy still won't lay down, we've watched her day and night the last couple of days and she's not gotten off her feet once, I think when she finally does, that colt will put in an appearace!
T looks huge, surely she cannot be too far off, what did you estimate as her due date? It's funny, Avery on camera looks enormous she's 340 days now, I guess t.v. does add to your waisteline!

DUE DATE (340) IS SATURDAY APRIL 1ST. YOU SAY COLT...GOOD THINKING!!! :-)
SOUNDS LIKE YOU MAY HAVE ANOTHER BUSY END OF THE WEEK OR WEEKEND?
DO YOUR HORSE SWISH THEIR TAILS ALOT? SHE IS OUT JUST SWISHING (WITH OCCASIONAL FLICKING) LIKE THE BUGS ARE ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE...THERE IS NON, ITS OUR FIRST DAY IN HTE 50'S SINCE LIKE NOVEMBER....APPARENTLY SHE FEELS SOMETHING ON HER. SHE SHAKES HER HEAD ALOT TOO. I DONT KNOW BUT SHE IS DEFINEATELY INTERESTING TO WATCH RIGHT NOW...IF ONLY I COULD READ HER MIND TO KNOW WHY SHE DOES HTE THINGS SHE IS DOING!
YEAH T WAS LAYING AND GRUNTING LAST NIGHT. I LOOKED MY WINDOW,COULDNT SEE HER, SHE WAS BACK IN THE ONLY CORNER OF THE BARN I CANNOT SEE SO I OPENED MY WINDOW TO LISTEN, SHE WAS GRUNTING AND GROANING, SO I WENT AND PUT MY COAT AND BOOTS ON AND BY TIME I OPENED THE DOOR SHE WAS STANDING IN THE DOORWAY. CRAZY GIRL! I SWEAR THEY PURPOSELY DO IT!

Kris- some of ours do the tail swishing, that's just because of the pressure and discomfort. (imagine those little hooves, ouch !) Avery doesn't do much of it though, either she's tough, or nothing much is going on with her..lol. She does lay and groan, it's funny if you walk into the barn at night, it's about like an orchestra..ROFL, what a bunch of pitiful mares.. 9 of them, taking turns sounding miserable. it rather feels like a maternity ward these days. Peppy is doing a lot of tail swishing and NO laying down, her legs are pretty swollen (no where near what Sage does) but enough to make me think she's getting pretty close, she'll probably foal before Avery does!

Thanks Dianne- that's what I'm thinking too, and the longer she decides to bake it, the better colt it will be so I'm just going to remain patient, even if it kills me!
Kris- I have noticed the milk veins have enlarged on Avery, that's about the only change I can honestly say I've seen. Last night her udder appeared a good bit more full, but this morning, it's back to the normal appearance. Frosty will be 320 days on Friday, so it's time to start watching her, but she has very little udder, so I'm not concerned it's coming very soon. Beth will be 320 on the 4th, she however looks like she could go much earlier than Frosty.. with my luck, they'll foal before Avery !

I KNOW EVENTUALLY IT WILL HAVE TO COME OUT, BUT I AM JUST WORRIED SHE WILL NEED HELP(OBVIOUSLY BECAUSE OF HER EXTERNAL APPEARANCE SHE COULD DEFINEATELY HAVE MONSTER INSIDE!) OTHERWISE IT WOULDNT BE AS MUCH OF AN ISSUE.
I AM TRYING TO REMAIN PATIENT...IM DOING PRETTY GOOD...I THINK ANYWAY! LOL

Kris- Yes, Avery is one of my personal horses so I have a vested interest in her but also because I'm so curious about what she'll have color wise and confirmation wise. She's a very well put together mare and we bred her to the same stud that Cisco is out of. Also, she may be a "smokey black" which could mean a palomino baby for me, that would be the bomb! Avery's sire is registered as a dun, as dark as she is, I doubt she carries dun factor but she could, so this baby could be just about anything at all. I'm accepting that it may just be a bay, but EXCITED about the possiblity that is COULD be a whole lot better than bay!

I SEE SO WE ARE BOTH WAITING ON HEALTHY FOALS, BUT MOST EXCITED ON THE COLOR! :-)
SO SHE IS A PERSONAL HORSE...WHAT ARE THE REST? JUST ONES TO TRAIN AND SELL? SO HOW MANY PERSONAL ONES WILL YOU HAVE THIS YEAR?

Kris- Avery is one I keep for myself to ride, my hubby gave her to me for my birthday a few years back. I actually have 7 horses of my own, Sage and Avery are the two that I ride at the moment. I also have a bay roan filly that I'm breaking out now to sell, the rest are yearlings (plus Cisco). I sold a couple of two year olds a few weeks ago and one other yearling, I had more than I could work with so I had to cut the numbers a bit. The rest of our horses are part of the business/lesson horses and horses for re-sale. (though I do sell mine too now and then) I just enjoy training/teaching them, when I've done all I can, and someone falls in love with them, I generally sell them and start another one. This last filly may be one of the last I do though, she's a tough one, I'm getting to old to be worked over that way..lol.
The foal Avery is carrying could be better than Cisco, and colored too..that's the exciting part.

Kris- I get attached to most of them, some less than others, but over the years I've gotten better at letting them go. The ones I sent to HI were mares I'd raised and trained for my boys to ride, it was sad letting them go. They have a good home though, and are very well cared for, so I take comfort in that. I guess I'm pretty picky about my horses and always looking to improve what I have, if there's something about one that I don't care for, it makes it easier for me to let them go. Like Avery, she rides like a dream, I've never ridden a smoother horse..ever..( and I never thought one would top Sage ) but Ave is a little on the lazy side, and I can't abide a lazy horse. I think with training this spring, I can light a little fire under her, but if not, I'll sell her.

i understand, some ive had for a couple years and something about them i do not get attachec to , they are easier to sell, now Tsaharah who i have had for 16 years, it would kill me now to sell her! she rides awesome, she is VERY smooth also, she has a bit of crabbiness in the pasture, but with a halter on she is super sweet! she is the one that all new riders ride when i or my daughter have friends over. even my son at 6 was riding her alone on hte roadsides. they are hard to come by adn when you find them you like to keep them. now my qh mare i will sell this spring, she is awesome bred, awesome broodmare/mommy, very mild mannered and sweet, but a bit nervous out on hte trail, i cant stand that, so she will have to move on, not to mention she is teaching Precious her yearling foal to be nervous as well. I always sell to people i can go visit the horse i sell for a few months after i sell them...makes it easier to know they are ok.

Kris- I made a mistake this past summer and sold my barrel mare to a gal that I thought would take really good care of her. She made a big to-do about getting her chiro care..etc.. well last month my mare came through the auction in terrible condition, I wanted to snatch the woman bald..she said," she's not fast enough for me".. My response was, "well maybe if you FED her, she'd run faster??".. luckily a local friend and neighbor saw her too and he's always wanted her, he bought her and she's well on the road to recovery. I think they'll get along very well, not everyone could ride that horse, she was a hot one and I think the woman was afraid of her once she actually opened her up in the arena.. I've not been attached to a horse like I was that one in a very long time, I'm relieved that she's in a good place now and I'll get to see her compete this summer too.

YIKES- Tornados just north of us! it's going to be a rough afternoon/evening here! I'll have to give Avery's baby a "weather related" name if it's born tonight..the barometric pressure is dropping, that could bring a couple of them on tonight! Whoo, hoo!! wind, hail, tornados and babies!

Ev - Here's a prayer hoping they STAY north of you.

Kris - I am planning on breeding my 20 yr old QH mare this year. She sounds a lot like Tsaharah. She taught all three of my girls to ride and she is my "guest" horse. I would really like to get that personality out of a baby from her. In fact, I would sell it if it didn't have that temprement. I have a Palomino stud picked out, but he is new at this - he has a geat personaility and I would love another bucksin. His first baby was a Palomino and he has 2 more babies on the way. I am afraid with his newness and her age, live cover may not work. I have a backup stud that she can pasture breed with...he is an old pro and a beauty, but he is sorrell and she is bay. This would not be my favorite choice of color combination.

thats too bad about the previous owner of the barrell horse, glad to hear she has a better home now!
kathee-id start early(now) and give the palomino a chance! and her, you never know she COULD take right away. adn if not you would still have time with the other stud.
yeah that is why i have bred T, i need a replacement, mellow and level headed! (YES BELIEVE IT OR NOT A LEVEL HEADED GOOD ARAB!:-) )

Kathee I would agree with Kris try now. 20 is not that old to have a foal.

For those of you waiting on your foals tell your mares this is what happens to your foals when they make you wait!!!

Lori- that is TOO funny, I think I should do that to Avery's foal IF it ever arrives. The weather did nothing to induce her into motherhood, so we continue to wait.
Kris & Kathee- we were lucky last night, there were several around us, but nothing too close by this time. The poor town 2 hours to our SE was hit again last night, they just had significant damage two weeks ago from a twister.

Kris- I'm thinking Cisco would have something to say about all that get-up being put on him. (I'm bad, but I've not even haltered him yet) We're working letting me touch his face, so far, he's not too keen on the idea.. going to have to bite the bullet and get him under wraps though before he gets too big to handle. He's really good, though he fights being caught, he's never offered to kick or bite, he just tries to get away. Chat ya soon! Ev.

I reminded Raven of this already so I will pass it on...According the the Foaling Rules, your mares will add days to their pregnancy for each time you dress them or their stable mates up in the costumes! It would definately be worth it, but just factor it into next year's foaling schedule!

Kathee if Lady pulls this waitng game too much next year SHE WILL BE THE ONE GETTING DRESSED UP !!!!!! Not the foal! I'm already working on nest years foaling schedule. They leave tomorrow so Lady can be rebred to that paint. They will be gone for a week. It gives me a whole week of things to do to them when they get back and maybe she will think twice about making me wait for this next one!! hehe :-)
