my mare is on day 336. she has steadily gotten less active, her bag is 1/2 full and tight, her tailhead is jello but the rest of her rump is solid. she is still eating as much as she can. her belly drops more and more everyday. her vulva seems them same and her temp was 100.2 i'm worried i'm going to miss the birth. should i be checking on her? anyone else have any experience with maidens? |

I had a maiden mare last year. I was very nervous because it was her first foal, and I had no idea what signs she would show. Unfortunately maiden mares are very hard to watch for foaling, but then again some of the old pro mares are hard to detect impending birth with also. well anyhow here is what my mare did; Started to bag up at 5 weeks before foaling Softening of her muscles about 1 week before Had a loose stool (more like a cow pie) the morning of. Developed huge balls of wax on her nipples 4 hours before foaling, you could wipe them off and they would come back in about 10min. She foaled that night at 12:05am. But keep in mind that all maiden mares are different. I have experienced 2 maidens now. Oh also my mare acted like she had colic about 2 weeks before she foaled, and we thought it was the real thing, but I think it was more her just being kicked by that colt. when he was born and I saw how kicky he was I could not imagine her caring that little devil. lol. I set my alarm and we checked on Sissy every hour the first week, and we still missed the foaling by about 10min. . I think they just want to have the foal in privacy. Hope that helped you some. |

oh btw. this year we set up a foaling camera in the barn so we can watch her from the comfort of our living room, and I can record it on dvd. Also we will not disrupt her by going out there unless I see we are needed. But our foaling barn is only about 100 feet from our house. I don't know if you have your mare close by or not. If not you might think about setting up a cot or something at the barn she is kept at. I know of some people that do that. Good luck. and keep us posted. |

well, thought it was going to be last night. the line form the point of her croup to her tailhead is concave, her tail is like jello and her udder is really tight! she was laying down, moaning, on and off throughout the day and she has stopped eating. her temp has come down quite a bit as well. the fluid from her udder is still a yellow clear liquid but her udder has gotten progressively more tight and warm. also this morning i noticed lots of discharge in her vagina so i'm thinking that's the mucous plug. i board my mare and the owner of the stable has a camera on her 24 hours a day but i am going to sleep in my trailer at the barn tonight because i think tonight is the night. wish me luck! |

IT'S A BOY!! My mare stopped eating and layed down and moaned quite a bit for the past 2 days so I knew we were close. She had beads of brown liquid on her nipples as of 10pm last night so I knew it was the night. I was sleeping at my boyfriends' house, who lives a mile from the barn, when i recived a call at 3:30 am from the man who is foaling my mare out. I raced out there in 10 minutes but missed the foaling. I got there when his back legs were still in and got my towels out of my foaling kit and began to rub him dry. I've imprinted him and I stayed with him all day. Mom and baby are doing wonderfully. My maiden mare suprised me by being the best mom anyone has ever seen. It's like she's done this before. Well, his name is Teleo which is Greek for "the goal" I'm hoping to register him as White Hot Asset. He's 40" at the withers and looks to be sorrel with 4 white legs. I'll post more pictures as he grows! http://photobucket.com/albums/c30/iheartlucius/Teleo/ |

Rebecca, Once again, congrats. One thing...I went back and looked over the pics, and while the pics aren't up close.... While i could be mistaken...I didn't see any white markings/white legs.....only facial white.. He is VERY handsome! |

yeah, the vet said his white markings won't show up for a couple more days but his feet are all white so we're thinking he has some white legs coming soon |

it is a bit deceiving, their feet are born whitish because they are soft, and they also have a protective coat over them as to not damage mom during birth, my chestnut(sorrel) foals have white and black feet, the white markingson the white hooves showed up at birth, so I would guess no white feet, but I could be wrong! |

thought i'd write a little update. teleo is doing very well. skeetles is doing pretty good also. hard to tell when you look at her now that she just had a foal 5 days ago. we did have a bit of a problem with her milk. her milk isn't letting down liek ym vet would like so she is now on a supplement called dyna-lode. other than that everything is going fine. i started halter-breaking 2 days ago because this foal WILL NOT follow his mom. he could care less where she is. he seems to be leading fine. well, i'm on my way out to the barn to see him now. i'll probably update again soon! i don't know if anyone reads it, but i'll keep posting. |

Post away! It definately helps first time breeders like me and I like to keep up with the little ones' progress. My husband knew I was excited, but nevrous about breeding this mare last year. I was reading everything I could find. He has noticed that I seem much calmer these last 3 months since I found this board. The situations discussed are so up to date and there are so many points of view that I really feel like I have a solid idea of what to expect (assuming no major problems). I have learned so much living through everyone's experiences. |

Rebecca yes we read the posts and are delighted that you share with us. I know the type foal your talking about they can be a handful...but so worth the effort you put into them. Sounds like you have things well in hand! |

well, i finally got out to the barn and took some pictures of him with my new camera. he's gotten BIG! he's about 95% halter broke because he still has his moments but for the most part walks/trots right with me. I sent in his registration papers last week and his new pending registered name is Zipped Up The Asset. Well, here's the link to his album. Look at how much he's grown!! He has to really stretch down to get milk. http://photobucket.com/albums/c30/iheartlucius/Teleo/ |

Rebecca - He has really grown. He looks like he is curious about everything. You must be having a great time with him. The mare looks ready for a ski trip or maybe she is going to rob a bank! How cold is it there? |

It's getting below 32 at night. We had a huge blizzard last week and the chill is hanging around. When it gets warmer, i'll switch her blanket for a sheet. She's wearing a custom stretch hood that my mom makes and sells. Teleo is my little shadow. He wants to be with me everywhere I go and wants to taste everything I have in my hands. He would stand back far enough from the camera for any far away shots, kept coming up and putting his nose in the camera. He's gonna be fun to break!! |

He's 4 weeks old today. He acts like he's about 6 months old. He's everyone's favorite foal at the barn because he's so friendly and outgoing. He'll let anyone pet him. Unlike the other foals that haven't been handled at all. It's amazing how much imprinting and fooling around with them can do. |

Oh, how fast they grow! It just seems like yesterday that I could't wait another minute for my mare to foal....and now Buddy is 10 weeks old. They are both at the breeding farm and the barn seems so empty without them...I hate going out there! Since they aren't here and I can't take a new picture, here's a one of him at 7 weeks: Please forgive the neighbors truck.... Hi Kathee, He's a big boy alright . And to think that photo was taken 3 weeks ago! We're all taking bets on how big he will be. He is an absolute teddy bear...the sweetest, most docile foal I've ever had. |
