Ok, I have a perplexing problem, I have a 4 1/2 year old maiden mare who weaves while stalled but has never weaved out in the pasture before. She was raced (I raced her in Oklahoma) She is bred to race AQHA races and got her ROM in racing. Her mother was a weaver so it is no big surprise that she weaves. But she has never weaved out in the pasture (5 acres). In the last 3 days I have caught her weaving at the fence. Could this be from her pregnancy? She has gone through all of the discomfort that maidens go through, biting at her sides sweating rolling, but this is the first time I have seen this in a maiden I have owned. Anyone else seen this before? she is at 326 days in foal. She has no bagging yet but has just begun softening at the hip/croup in the last couple of days. Sorry for the long post.

Jan, sometimes I have seen that with a pg mare close to term, a horse that is in discomfort or pain etc. , their vices seem to be more powerful than not. ?? She probabally doesn't feel like moving much as she is uncomfortable so the vice shows up more .

Thanks kim, I thought that might be the case, but after 30 years of breeding horses she is the first I have seen to have this behavior out in the pasture, today I think all of the horses were feeling the cool weather, because every horse out there was flying across the pastures kicking up their heels bucking and running. Even this maiden was running the derby in the pasture LOL She was weaving this morning, the running was this evening before dusk. Thanks Kim it is nice to know she has others like her out there! Puts my mind at ease thanks again.

Our first mare weaved in the field right before foaling. We turned her out since it was supposed to be a nice day and just paced and paced. Her water broke just minutes before we had planned to head home. We could see a hoof presenting by the time we got her into her stall!

could be stress related too..she is just unsure of what is causing her discomfort. My maiden does not weave but she does the hip cock back and forth so much it looks like she is dancing! LOL

Well thanks, I still see her do this and she is at day 326 right now. she lays down alot now out in the field and you can see her looking at her sides alot, still no bag development yet and no softening around the tail head/croup, so it's still wait and see, I bring her in at night into the stall and let her out during the day I have someone there when she is turned out so she is not alone. So we wait and see. thanks everyone!
