My pregnant mare is limping today and I have no idea why. it is because of her front feet.I know that horses carry most of their weight on their front feet so can the weight gain from being pregnant be causing this? there are bumps on her lower legs, not big ones. She was fine yesterday....any ideas? |

I have noticed that my mare is off on her left front too. Actually she is walking on egg shells on both front feet tonite. I don't have an answer and am wondering the same thing. I hope someone comes here who can give us an insight! |

Any heat in the feet? If a heavy pregnant mare, I would wonder about stress founder. If there are toxaemia issues as a result of a problem with the pregnancy, that could result in founder (laminitis) too. Hope not, but might be worth checking... |

Hey Jos, thanks for the info but how do we find out if it is founder. My mare isn't huge, she is a lot bigger than she use to be but some people don't even think she's pregnant and she's not obese pregnant either. She won't pick up her left front foot at all, i walked her a little but it didn't seem to get better, i was thinking about getting a easy foot boot thing so she doesn't have to walk on it. Does that sound good? What is the cure for founder? should i take her off grain and alfalfa? thanks.. elena Kymi-how far along is your mare, mine is almost 10 months.. |

Itchy is 337 days today. I have felt her feet for heat, none. If I walk her out she doesn't favor that foot much, but when she is walking towards me in her stall she favors it. Who knows? I took her shoes off three weeks ago. She has been bare foot before and there are no rocks, just sand where her stall is. It's a mystery to me. I have always fed her alfalfa and have never had a problem with it as far as founder goes. I never give her grain, but started about three months ago. She doesn't get much, so I don't think it is the grain. I would take your mare off grain for awhile but keep her on the alfalfa, she needs the protein. Have you always fed grain and what kind do you feed? Have you had your farrier look at her? |

Probably best to have a vet look at her... |

Hi Kymi and Jos, A little bit of an update. Yesterday she couldn't/wouldn't lift up the foot she was limping on and today she would pick up both front feet and hold them. It took me a minute to get one up but she did good and held it up there for me. She is also walking better and her head isn't going as low(like when they're limping they lower the leg when they step with the leg that hurts) and she isn't limping as bad. I got a chance to look at the frog of the foot and theres not puss or anything. I am hoping she just knicked it or the weight change is causing a little bit of a problem. I looked up thrush and founder and I am hoping she doesn't have it!! I have always fed Alfalfa/ Grass Hay. Which is what she is getting now. I didn't feed grain until about 3 months ago too but I slowed her down to a scoop at night until she gets better. (she gets upset and stands by her grain bowl until I give it to her, Talk about spoiled) I hope she will be okay and your mare too Kymi! Keep me posted and I will keep ya'll posted as well! Thanks a bunch! Elena |
