My mare is 8 months pregnant and is outside in a pasture and she's shedding! I am in California and it is raining on and off. I am worried about her shedding because I don't want her to be cold. Does anyone elses mare shed when she's pregnant? I might put a blanket on her if i see her shivering. Any ideas why?
I too noticed my mare was molting ALOT and I was really wondering about it - She had her summer coat in all the snow when normally she would be fluffy and be wearing a huge rug! Apparently (and I dont have children) it is much like human pregnancy - Its like having a little hot water bottle inside your belly, you feel much warmer throughout pregnancy, your hormones are all over and your temperature gage goes up the creek! I wouldnt worry about her blanket if she desnt feel cold - test the the tips and base of her ears - that is a good indicator of whether a horse is cold. I have still got a rug on my mare as I normally would but it is only 6oz thick rather than the normal 14oz. Hope this is of some use to you...
my mare too sheds after 9 months, the foal she had in march she was down to summer hair (and we usually still have snow on hte ground at that time) and even less, and the foal she had in june she actually had hairless areas on her neck, chest and hind end.
