Hello from Louisiana! I was just doing some surfing, and came across this board...i've read some great info here so far! I have a 5 year old medicine hat paint due to foal ???...lol...I bought her in Aug. and was told Jan. 15...I became concerned with her lack of size, and had her palpated...vet said definitly in foal, but NOT Jan. MAYBE end Feb..PROBABLY beginning March...so...when I call the seller back, she admitted she had no idea! Hubby works out of town and she just put the mare in with the stud. Her exact words..."If she bred the first day she went in the pasture, Jan. 15, if she bred the last day she was in the pasture April 15"...aaaaaahhhhh...so we wait! I have her where I can watch her closely, I know all the signs to look for, lol guess I just wanted to share my impatience/annoyance with someone...This will be her 3rd foal, both born with mare alone, and no probs. I got this from a reliable source (the man who takes care of the sellers horses while he works out of town.) Hope it goes that smoothly this time. The pic below is the mare, Heidi, in November, about 2 weeks before I had the vet out...That's my daughter Kacey leading the grand entry at a Southern Pride Youth Rodeo http://forum.equisearch.com/photopost/data/500/1049KaceyHeidiFlag1.JPG

Penny - Hello from your neighbor in Alabama. I have a 5 yr old Buckskin maiden mare due to foal in late March or April. This is my first foal and I have found this site invaluable. How did you guys weather Katrina? I am on the coast and we were blessed, but it was hairy. I gave the horses free run while leaving the barn open for shelter. They were standing in it by choice when the roof blew off and they spent the rest of the storm (6 hours) in the pasture dodging debris. I seriously, seriously, seriously almost went out and brought them in our game room. I was afraid that might feak them out even more. In the end they did fine, they just stood with the rear ends to the wind looking very unhappy. Nature has a way of taking care of it's own.
We didn't lose any family or property to Katrina, but the economy around here is horrible! I'm only about 45 minutes from N.O. and it's BAD! My horses did great...they're boarded at an old racehorse farm, with a huge, cinder block barn, so they did great...some folks from N.O. came there after the storm...they said it was horrible! Thanks for asking, nice to "meet ya"
Penny - Let me ask you this...are you foaling on straw? Everything I have read says that is the way to go and I buy into it completely, unfortunately, I can't find any straw in this area. Everyone here says they foal out on sawdust or in the pasture and now that I have heard all the reasons not to do that, I am afraid to. Other than saw dust, my options are dirt or pine straw (neither are good). I have called the Alabama Cooperative Extension to see if they know of anyone within 100 miles that has straw. It is just not a crop grown in this area. If you have a local connection I am willing to travel to pick it up, I have kin in New Orleans and I can tie it in.
i will certainly check in to it for you...I know it's somewhere around here, cuz i've seen it at our barn...i'll check and get back to you...feel free to email me directly at penny.pace@lpsb.org
