What is the safest fencing to use with a mare and foal? I worry about the foal rolling under or falling thru board fence, or a frolicing foal catching a hoof in square or vmesh wire? Thanks

Sometimes it seems that there is no "safest fencing"!

I guess that it all boils down to a matter of personal preference. I have had many mares and foals in post-and-rail fencing, and never had a problem, but on the other hand, the pastures have all been 20+ acres.

Good visibility; lack of sharp edges; ability to withstand a fair amount of pressure, but "give" if the pressure gets too much.... These are all properties I would look for.

If you go to Kentucky, you will see a lot of nursery pastures with a combination of board fencing and small diamond mesh (small enough that a hoof will not get caught), and that is probably the safest..... and the most expensive too!

Have a look at Electrobraid fencing. I bit the bullet recently and I haven't regretted it. It's not cheap but it's certainly cheaper than the diamondmesh.

I have found some panels that have wide spacing at the bottom so foals or full grown horses can get their legs out if they do lay down an get them under the rail,They are closer spacing at the the next level an even closer at the top so they can't get the heads through them I love em
