I have a Quarter Horse mare that is a maiden mare. She is 6 y/o officially today. She is 16.1hh. She is bred to Zips White Chip for a late February foal. Her official due date is February 28th as dictated to me by her breeders @ K-State. She is on a regular deworming schedule, shoeing schedule etc. She was on Strategy/Horse Chow until November of 2005. She was then switched to Nutrena Youth feed. She gets 2# of feed AM and PM as well as unlimited grass hay. She has recieved her 5,7,9 month Rhino-K shot and is scheduled for her 10 month vaccines on the 28th of January. She will be moved into a monitored foaling stall as of January 28th or so. I did show her until August of last year and rode her until about 2 months ago. She gets regular turnout and occasional lungeing. This will be her first foal and my first foal, any information you experienced people have would be much appreciated. Once I fix my scanner, I'll post some pictures of her. She is my only horse at the moment and is the love of my life. My vet said her foal is going to be on the large side as she is enormous. I would just like to know if i'm doing everything right, if i'm missing something or if i'm doing something wrong. thanks so much!

My 2 cents worth relate to your observation of there being an "official due date"... take a look at this article on "due dates" :-)

Good luck!

I always have a big argument over here with people and their "due dates" because of Jos's article and because my first foal was born without me. A) I listened to people about their due dates, and B) my mare shows no signs of foaling until she foals including the milk test. Her milk goes white after the foal is born. I never ask due date, always covering date.
Rebecca, your mare sounds very well looked after and I hope you have a healthy foal!

i'm hoping for a colt. i do not think i'm going to keep him a stallion as i board my horses, i simply would like a nice, quiet gedling. my mare is very sweet and very good but she gets VERY friendly when she's in heat and doesn't like to pay attention to me, but the other horses. I know mares always choose their own due date but that's the 340 day mark from the breeding date. the owner of the barn where i board said it's a filly because she was bred 2-3 times and the worker at the barn says it's a colt because he sticks out to one side. my vet couldn't tell because the baby moved around too much and then became too big to tell. is there anyway of guessing?
