Hi guys, I'm just new to this site but I have a query for anyone who may know. I had a friends horse arrive on my property a few weeks ago so she can foal here, she is due on the 20th Oct! I've just realised that she is crawling with lice..What do I do? I called the vet to see what I could do for her but they basically said that all I can do is bath her and try to drown the lice. Can I treat her with anything?? Has anyone else had a similar problem.

i used the ADAMS flee dip on my mare let set on her for about 10 minutes then rinsed her off..but my mare wasnt pregnant at the time..ask you vet if you can put that dip on her.. you may have to give her a good rinse after to make sure its all off of her... or maybe put it in a spray bottle watered down so that you can leave it on her

Thanks Theresa, I've actually never heard of that product..not sure if its available in Australia! There are plenty of products around but finding one that is safe for a pregnant mare is near impossible. I asked a different vet today and they contacted the manufacturer of a powder called 'Pestene' which informed us that it is safe for pregnant mares . So if anyone else has a similar problem then try pestene! We also used a human head lice comb to get a lot of the lice off..then drowned them in a bucket!
